Tight friends taking my tip to cover their meal costs

Just been out for a meal with group of friends & some of their friends for a shared birthday. Lovely evening all agreed at start just to pay for what we have to eat and drink as some driving and some not - quite organised. Four out of the 14 of us worked out our share plus £5 tip added on each (great service from staff) then pasted on the receipt down to next lot. At the end heard one of the girls go to the waiter ‘sorry it’s not a huge tip’ and when asked how much had they left was told just £6!!! WTF!!! I was literally gagged by friend who didn’t want a scene...CF alert!

Don't worry LoveInTokyo, WhatToDoAboutThis2017 only eats in McDonalds

TeisanLap · 15/03/2018 03:46

Whattodo - save your breath for blowing your porridge.

PremierNaps · 15/03/2018 04:35

To be fair I don't go out with CF friends but will leave the tip until last and we all chip in. You should have announced where's the £20 tip gone OP.

WhatToDoAboutThis2017 · 15/03/2018 05:53

LoveInTokyo Yes of course; it’s stingy to think people get paid a NMW for their work for which they are expected to be polite, friendly and offer good service.

Tipping might make you feel good about yourself and you might enjoy playing Lady Bountiful, but at the same time you’re ignoring the fact that you’re a hypocrite.

Coyoacan Nope. Just happily work there Smile

Goodness, What. Everyone knows that you tip in restaurants. It’s something you should factor into the cost of your meal. If you’d ever worked in a restaurant you might get it. (But most people get it without having worked in a restaurant.)

sandgrown · 15/03/2018 06:45

We went to a birthday meal for which I.paid my share plus a tip. The birthday girl's husband paid the bill but I didn't see a tip go in even though I asked him if he had enough for a tip and he said yes. The server was excellent and went above and beyond so I gave him another tip when I left. I should not have been surprised. We were asked to travel 50 miles for a meal for birthday girl's 50th ( all but two people were from her home town) and they didn't even buy us a drink!

I have absolutely no idea what you mean.

But I have a feeling you don’t know what you mean either as you seem confused as to what telling a person to ‘save their puff for blowing their porridge’ means.

Regardless of that though I suggest you report my post if you really do believe I’m troll hunting. I’m quite sure MNHQ know all of my usernames stretching over the years I’ve been here.

LoveInTokyo Yeah, “everyone knows”. Just like “everyone knows” you’re supposed to get married, have children and settle down. Just like “everyone knows” you’re supposed to dance at weddings. Just like “everyone knows” you have savoury dishes before sweet.

Oh no, wait! We live in a civilised country with freedom of choice that pays everyone a NMW and the only thing you’re supposed to do is follow the law. Anything else is optional.

And yes, I do work in a restaurant; a fast food restaurant.

LoveInTokyo · 15/03/2018 10:26

You can choose to be a dick if you want. That is up to you. But that doesn’t change the fact that it is rude not to tip without good reason.

WhatToDoAboutThis2017 · 15/03/2018 10:31

LoveInTokyo It’s not “being a dick” to not give restaurant staff a tip. Are you “being a dick” when you don’t tip fast food restaurant staff, retail workers, carers or other NMW jobs?

And nope, you can’t claim your opinion as fact I’m afraid.

LoveInTokyo · 15/03/2018 10:51

You can choose to believe that if it makes you feel better. You’d just better be comfortable with the fact that all the waiting staff and most people you might be dining with think you are one.

Imsosceptical · 15/03/2018 11:00

Pretty gobsmacked at this but then again not surprised really, group meals (be it friends or family) can be so painful when it comes to splitting the bill. The pro and against tipping views are totally irrelevant here because all parties agreed to the 'terms' at the beginning of the meal and could have voiced their objections at that point. So essentially those who didn't pay the correct amount should be ashamed at their dishonesty and question their own integrity, knowing you have cheated and ultimately stolen from friends can't be a nice feeling.....

GlueSticks · 15/03/2018 11:24

Everything else is optional, but if you choose to go against what is considered good manners by the majority of the population you have to accept that you are being rude and some people will think you are a dick because of it.

KERALA1 · 15/03/2018 12:05

Exactly. I have the freedom of choice to never say please or thank you, talk over people and eat with my mouth open. But I don't because culturally it's unacceptable- although of course not illegal. Culturally most people tip waiting staff. Your passionate arguments as to why that's wrong mean nothing.

expatinscotland · 15/03/2018 12:44

FFS, some people love to merail! Look at me! It's all about ME! Stuff your thread. And they are always such delights. Bet people are beating down their door to go out with them.

Most people tip in a restaurant for good service. In this case, the people put in money for a tip and the CFers stole it to pay for their meal. That makes them twats.
