AIBU or are we all going to be trapped in the UK from next March?

So, Ryanair and Thomas Cook are inserting clauses in their booking terms to say that if your flight abroad doesn't go ahead because of Brexit that's your problem. No doubt others will follow. If any deal is ever done, to allow planes to fly, it is bound to be a lot more expensive than it is now.

Is everyone planning many years of UK-only holidaying?

Agree ohno scaremongering pathetic stuff. And FWIW I am a Remainer but now making the best of the situation by not being dramatic Grin

HamishsMomma · 11/03/2018 16:06

All we can do is Keep Calm and Carry On .

OhYouBadBadKitten · 11/03/2018 16:06

Great Scary we can all go to Dunkirk. But wait. That goes out of the same Dover Terminal that the Calais ferries do. Dover is a nightmare when it all starts going wrong there. That poor town.

kerryweaverscrutch · 11/03/2018 16:06

Is that a no then? None of you can tell me how it will work?

Eltonjohnssyrup · 11/03/2018 16:07

No sign of anyone sorting out a new deal

Er, have you missed the great big negotiations going on? ‘No sign’. Seriously?

MelanieSmooter · 11/03/2018 16:07

Well there are worst places to be ‘trapped’ aren’t there? Fucking idiot scaremongers.

notmaryberry · 11/03/2018 16:07

As I understand it (and I may have got it a bit wrong) an airline can fly:
-within it's own country of registration
-between it's country of registration and another country
-additionally, EU registered airlines can operate between other EU countries (I. E. Ryanair registered in Ireland but operates UK to Italy) or EU to another country (I. E. Norwegian Airlines operate UK to USA).
You can not operate in another country, or between two other countries without getting permission and local airlines can object. So for example Ryanair will lose their automatic right to operate out of the UK and if they tried to, British Airways could object.
Not scaremongering, just how it is. We could potentially lose all our non-UK registered low cost airlines and flights could become a lot more expensive.

mrsreynolds · 11/03/2018 16:07

....and don't expect leavers to give any actual solutions or proposals!

That's the job of those pesky remoaners!

kerryweaverscrutch · 11/03/2018 16:07

and they are going so well.....

OhYouBadBadKitten · 11/03/2018 16:08

While most of us can agree that O Leary is a catastrophising git, there are concerns that do need to be tackled.

Mintychoc1 · 11/03/2018 16:08

Flying is not great for the environment, it wouldn't be a disaster if there were fewer flights!

OP if your company is taking fewer bookings lately, I suspect it's more to do with the general economic climate, austerity and all that, than Brexit .

Clarissalarissa · 11/03/2018 16:08

If you think that Ryanair are worrying unnecessarily, can you explain why please? The fact is that new agreements need to be entered into, and fast, and that nothing has happened yet.

I am old enough to remember travelling in Europe before we were ever in the EU. No visas were needed. And believe it or not, people did actually work in Europe, too. A BiL of mine worked as a doctor in Paris before we joined.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 11/03/2018 16:10

I think that's the most likely scenario notmary, we will lose the low cost airlines. If that happens, from an environmental point of view that's a good thing. But flying will become a massive luxury that fewer people will be able to afford.

kerryweaverscrutch · 11/03/2018 16:11

sure, but you get that its not the 1960's, yes?

Because Micheal O’Leary is a fucking notorious drama queen.

"Well there are worst places to be ‘trapped’ aren’t there? Fucking idiot scaremongers."

This response sums up Brexit so well Grin

Roussette · 11/03/2018 16:13

Getting me too. I managed to travel before the EC was formed, it was called 'The Common Market' then god I'm old

kerryweaverscrutch · 11/03/2018 16:13

Because Micheal O’Leary is a fucking notorious drama queen

Yeah, but he's also right quite often. You don't get to be that rich and that successful by getting everything wrong!

DeloresJaneUmbridge · 11/03/2018 16:13

I wouldn't be concerned as yet.

He issue is that nobody knows what he future will hold. However I am certain none of the EU countries want to discourage tourism any more than we do. It earns lots of money.

I think the airline heads are just being pragmatic and trying to plan ahead. Let's be honest ...negotiations are still ongoing and I have every hope it will all iron itself out.

And I say that as a Remainer. I am not happy we are exiting but am certain once everything is ironed out that it will be fine. It's just I suspect that ironing out is going to take place over the rest of my lifetime before it settles down (am in my 50s).

OhYouBadBadKitten · 11/03/2018 16:13

People are assuming that it will go back to being like the old days (when a trip to France was a once every few years huge treat for us as a family). But they are assuming that we can just wind back the clock. That doesn't seem to be as easy as some people have been assuming.
We also had far far fewer people travelling regularly 'abroad' then.

AnnieAnoniMouse · 11/03/2018 16:13

Use your brain. Much of the ‘worrying’ is nothing more than political manipulation. Stop being so gullible FGS.

eurochick · 11/03/2018 16:13

I don't think we are all going to be trapped, but a lot of people on this thread are underestimating the work to be done to make sure everything runs smoothly after Brexit and failing to understand the complexities of doing this - air traffic control, landing slots, operating permissions, data sharing - all essential for keeping planes flying and all currently subject to EU law. We can absolutely make agreements to replace the EU provisions but these all need to be negotiated and will take time.

PuntasticUsername · 11/03/2018 16:14

"OP if your company is taking fewer bookings lately, I suspect it's more to do with the general economic climate, austerity and all that, than Brexit"

Then thank goodness that Brexit is projected to cause a massive boost to the UK economy and make us all loads richer.

Oh, wait.
