IWD today, obvs, so one guy on our team work messaging chat (about 20 people on there) shared this pic. What banter eh.

I replied saying ‘sorry I don’t get it Confused - can you explain the joke’, and he’s said that he will explain to me tomorrow at work, the delight that he is.

Cue others on the chat offering to book a meeting room, film it, send a company wide invite etc so we can all witness his explanation.

I feel like just watching him squirm in front of the whole team won’t be enough, so I wanted to plan a line of questioning or whatnot that would maximise the enjoyment for all involved, except for him, and not make me look like a humourless fun sponge in the process.

Ideas?

A senior partner made a joke about ironing first thing on IWD?

Facepalm doesn’t even begin to cover it.

greenlavender · 10/03/2018 08:07

In the nicest possible way, this sort of reaction is what gets feminists a bad name. It's quite funny, laugh it off.

Hudson123 · 10/03/2018 08:38

It’s a silly joke! The world is full of bad news and seriousness just laugh it off. I know loads of men who do the ironing so it’s out dated in my opinion!

I do wish we could go back to enjoying each other’s humour (however lame) and stop taking offence so easily.

profile22 · 10/03/2018 09:06

I received this joke too from a male member of the family and really laughed about,
There is more to life than getting so upset about a picture that you’d need to call a meeting about it.
Unless he is a complete a@“&hole, and makes frequent jokes about us women and our ‘expected roles’ I wouldn’t go as far as doing any of what you meantioned.

solylluvia · 10/03/2018 09:25

For those who find it funny: just put something in its place focusing on ethnic minorities and see if you still feel comfortable about it making you laugh. Goodness knows how we get to 2018 and sexist jokes are still doing the rounds and if you dare to question it, you are accused of being humourless. It's a very old play, but reading this thread it reminded me of it: Comedians by Trevor Griffiths. It came just before the alternative comedy movement in the 1980s, when you know, making racist jokes became completely unacceptable. Seriously, read Griffiths' play if you find that joke funny.

iheartmichellemallon · 10/03/2018 09:46

Totally agree soly

cucaracha · 10/03/2018 10:14

solylluvia As a woman I am deeply offended to be called a minority, a member of an oppressed group, a born-victim, or whatever else I've been called on that thread. THAT is offensive. The joke is funny.

Kaybush · 10/03/2018 11:08

OP it's just a rather funny joke and you're making yourself look worse by creating drama around it.

If he'd written something really sexist or complaining about celebrating women's day, that's different, but this is just irony.

WobbleHead · 10/03/2018 11:27

So for people saying women aren’t oppressed - do you also think IWD is therefore pointless? I guess if YOU don’t feel oppressed then it’s all ok then?

One of the problems with jokes is that in general they do offend somebody, so do we all stop telling jokes? There is a line, I guess. But who polices it? (Both jokes made me laugh Im afraid Grin)

WobbleHead · 10/03/2018 11:50

Sorry to break this to you but there are plenty of jokes which don’t involve the need to offend. Unless you only find offensive jokes funny?

WobbleHead · 10/03/2018 11:51

I mean - it’s not exactly hard, is it?

That1950sMum · 10/03/2018 11:53

Ok, I'll admit I cant be bothered to read 12 pages of comment on this, but I must admit this made me laugh out loud. If only he'd got his grammar right it would have been perfect!

CadyHeron · 10/03/2018 12:01

It is kinda funny. don't take it to heart ffs some women are so silly about little things it isn't a direct insult to you it a bloody joke.
Agreed and I'm a woman who saw the funny side. I'm probably letting down Da Sisterhood or something, but meh.

OJZJ · 10/03/2018 12:05

cucaracha hear hear!! Totally agree with you.

callmeadoctor · 10/03/2018 12:07

Right then, Wobble has thrown the gauntlet for non offensive jokes, so lets have them Grin

callmeadoctor · 10/03/2018 12:08

(Wobble determined to take offence so we had better think about the jokes that we post Grin Grin )

callmeadoctor · 10/03/2018 12:10

What do you call a singing laptop? A Dell Grin

callmeadoctor · 10/03/2018 12:11

Whats blue and smells like red paint? Blue paint Grin

That1950sMum · 10/03/2018 12:15

Good luck to all those who found it funny, you are why our daughters will find it difficult to be taken seriously in the workplace.

Or, the women who have enough time on their hands at work to fuss about other people's jokes will. I'd be embarrassed for someone who thought it was worth wasting my working day to discuss this (quite amusing) joke.

That1950sMum · 10/03/2018 12:17

Whats blue and smells like red paint? Blue paint Love this one!!

What do you call a fly with no wings? A walk Grin

Pumperthepumper · 10/03/2018 12:19

Actually callmeadoctor I’d much rather hear a joke you’d text to your colleagues on say, Martin Luther King day or St Patrick’s Day or Ash Wednesday or any religious celebration. Remember: the joke has to poke fun of the people who recognise those days as important because that’s what makes it funny. I’m sure nobody will be offended, what with it being just banter and all.

That1950sMum · 10/03/2018 12:21

A horse walks into a bar. The barman asks "Why the long face?". Grin Grin

callmeadoctor · 10/03/2018 12:24

Sorry, you've lost me Pumper?

Pumperthepumper · 10/03/2018 12:40

So, the reason WobbleHead felt this joke was worthy of a thread is because her male colleague sent a joke designed to belittle women on international women’s day. She has to lighten up about it because it’s just banter and she is silly to be offended.

So by that reckoning, I’d love to hear a joke that people would be totally ok to send to their colleagues that meet the criteria I’ve written about above.

Or is it only jokes about women that are funny?
