Help me school this prat at work

IWD today, obvs, so one guy on our team work messaging chat (about 20 people on there) shared this pic. What banter eh.

I replied saying ‘sorry I don’t get it Confused - can you explain the joke’, and he’s said that he will explain to me tomorrow at work, the delight that he is.

Cue others on the chat offering to book a meeting room, film it, send a company wide invite etc so we can all witness his explanation.

I feel like just watching him squirm in front of the whole team won’t be enough, so I wanted to plan a line of questioning or whatnot that would maximise the enjoyment for all involved, except for him, and not make me look like a humourless fun sponge in the process.

Ideas?

Brought it up in our team meeting this morning as we had a few mins spare for AOB - nothing dramatic, we all had a laugh. Did he learn anything? Of course not. But I had a conflab with the other female team members afterwards and they were happy someone had spoken up and given them a chance to join in with expressing frustration at lazy sexist jokes in the workplace.

It’s funny because you can’t iron that banner - it’s not made of cotton.

TheAnonymousNobody · 09/03/2018 19:32

For everyone saying to correct his "grammar", you should actually be saying to correct his diction...

DamnDeDoubtanceIsSpartacus · 09/03/2018 19:33

Well done Wobblehead!

|It's the drip, drip, drip that is so wearing. Some bugger has to call it out, and you did. Smile

ShiftyMcGifty · 09/03/2018 19:35

Oh and it would be the sort of twatish suggestion I imagine a clueless young male colleague would make, which is why it made me chuckle. Cause I can’t imagine a woman saying such an idiotic thing. So I find it funny because I’m laughing at a man

beardies · 09/03/2018 20:03

What anonymous said...

And Jesus...

It was banter

WobbleHead · 09/03/2018 20:11

Oh and - plot twist - I wasn’t in the office yesterday morning (prat colleague didn’t share meme image on group chat until late afternoon), but apparently our senior partner (male, 50s) came in at 9am and made a joke to the team at their desks that as it was IWD he should have brought his ironing in.

So that’s probably what inspired prat colleague to keep the BANTS going later, but via group chat instead. He was just following the example laid down by his senior.

That sounds a pretty positive outcome then WobbleHead, hopefully he’ll have taken some of it on board at least.

summerstorm · 09/03/2018 20:12

You need to get a life, I thought it was funny. Getting HR involved is way over the top

WobbleHead · 09/03/2018 20:14

Please read the thread Summer. No hr involved.

Sorry, cross posted. Not so positive then Angry

AssassinatedBeauty · 09/03/2018 20:23

Remember, sexist jokes are just banter so totally harmless and jolly good fun for all. Weird how banter isn't racist so much these days, wonder why?

Abbylee · 09/03/2018 20:43

No JOKES! No humor, no laughter, sarcasm, or any other form of bursting the bubble of the tired, downtrodden or prejudiced.

Yes. It's a tired old joke but he's the guy who isn't being celebrated.

My husband is a white male. My son is a white male. But both are considered a pox upon society bc of their gender and skin color. Neither is the stereotypical male that we need to demonize. Both are good employees to female bosses.

Times are changing, men aren't all bad, in fact every person alive is discriminated against and sexually harassed.

Why can't we have international humanity day?

My son gets bigger tips than his female peers at work. His boss told the girl (18 yo)who complained "some people still feel men deserve more money."

Instead of telling her that he hurries up and serves people politely, correctly and in a timely fashion with a smile while she hides in the back and never meets customer's eyes.

And yes, that banner needs pressing but none of my irons have genitalia sensors on them, so anyone can use them.

Nettie1964 · 09/03/2018 20:44

Sorry call him on this. I am in my 50s and this is just the kind of shit that needs stopping. I am not usually so vocal but ......

Miranda15110 · 09/03/2018 20:54

Report him to HR, really? I bet your fun at parties.

Pumperthepumper · 09/03/2018 21:02

In what world is this?! Being white and male is about the most privileged position on earth, you are out of your mind if you think they are in any way oppressed by being a) white and b) male.

Who is the ‘stereotypical male’ that we need to demonise?

Squishysquirmy · 09/03/2018 21:09

Who is demonizing men on this thread? Certainly not the op! She responded to a sexist joke in a measured, lighthearted way that made it obvious she thought it was an inappropriate joke in a work environment without getting the guy into trouble. He made the joke publicly, her response was also public.

How is that hysterical?
How is that being a "fun sponge"?
Which men are being "demonized" here?
What on earth was that pp who mentioned graves and revenge on about? Unless there's an epic drip feed coming, the op is not the bloody count of Monte Cristo.

Most of us know that men are perfectly capable with an iron- that's what makes the joke so stupid.

"Hur hur hur. Its wimmins day. They dont like sexism. I'l tell them to get back to housework!" Not exactly the height of wit.

For everyone saying to correct his "grammar", you should actually be saying to correct his diction...

Not necessarily. The person wrote 'of' instead of using 'have' as part of the grammatical construction of the present perfect tense/aspect.

sallyfox · 10/03/2018 00:07

absolutely hysterical!!!!!!

sallyfox · 10/03/2018 00:18

Abbylee - thank you for the truth

DamnDeDoubtanceIsSpartacus · 10/03/2018 06:46

Why the misogyny sally? Why are women standing up to casual sexism hysterical? Do you say the same when people stand up to racists? It's always shocks me how cross people get when women speak out about sexism.

lolli18 · 10/03/2018 06:53

It is kinda funny. don't take it to heart ffs some women are so silly about little things it isn't a direct insult to you it a bloody joke.
