IWD today, obvs, so one guy on our team work messaging chat (about 20 people on there) shared this pic. What banter eh.

I replied saying ‘sorry I don’t get it Confused - can you explain the joke’, and he’s said that he will explain to me tomorrow at work, the delight that he is.

Cue others on the chat offering to book a meeting room, film it, send a company wide invite etc so we can all witness his explanation.

I feel like just watching him squirm in front of the whole team won’t be enough, so I wanted to plan a line of questioning or whatnot that would maximise the enjoyment for all involved, except for him, and not make me look like a humourless fun sponge in the process.

Ideas?

You can point out to him the sign was quite clearly made by a bloke. If a woman made the sign she would have chosen to use a material that didn't need ironing.

Wintertime4 · 09/03/2018 18:36

You know I did find it funny, but it really does need calling out.

And correcting the grammar.

Imagine a similar racist ‘joke’.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 09/03/2018 18:38

The OP knows this colleague well enough to know it was not intended as a joke. Whether or not you find this funny (I don't), I accept the OP's view that his design to share this with the whole team was not benign.

Whilst it might be intended as a witty statement on the ridiculousness of gender stereotypes it does come across as "women know your place".

Castieldeansam · 09/03/2018 18:39

@WobbleHead, did it happen?
I hope you used what you posted (pg6) something along the lines

"If were drawing our attention to a subversion of expectations and ultimately mocking the type of people who post sexist shit, and their poor grammar, I would agree, or is that too high brow for you? I can explain in simpler terms if it helps?"

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 09/03/2018 18:39

CavoliRiscaldati · 09/03/2018 18:39

I think becoming hysterical about it, as opposed to just not finding it funny, is doing us a lot of disservice and is pushing ridiculous stereotypes about feminists and women in general.

It's not offensive, it's not sexist. That comment could have equally come from a man or a woman for a start, it is funny

NotACleverName · 09/03/2018 18:40

No idea why allegedly was in square brackets. Because you don't find it funny? Humour's very subjective. Hadn't you realised?

Absolutely. After ten pages and 200+ replies nobody has explained why it's funny, though. That's all I want to know.

What's that expression? "Not clever by name, not clever by nature"?

Oh, such a cutting remark.

CadyHeron · 09/03/2018 18:42

I agree. It does make people roll their eyes and think you're an over-reacting loon whether you like it or not. I wouldn't use the word hysterical though, you'll get someone along accusing you of being a man in a minute.

Adventuritis · 09/03/2018 18:42

I was sent this yesterday and it’s one of the funniest memes I’ve seen in a very long time!! Everyone I’ve shown it to has also found it hilarious.... not a single bad reaction! Lighten up!

Charolais · 09/03/2018 18:43

I laughed again when I had another look.

Areyoureallykidding · 09/03/2018 18:46

Why is it I hate my children so much....

I have done everything for them and yet get daily ignorance or abuse. Had enough!

Adventuritis · 09/03/2018 18:46

Closely followed by this one today!

Humour's subjective, if you don't find it funny you don't find it funny. How are you supposed to explain why something is funny?
For example off the top of my head - Russell Brand is about as funny as a bad dose of piles in my opinion. Plenty of other people find him hilarious though.
Someone telling me why I'm wrong and "but he IS funny!" won't sway me Grin

AssassinatedBeauty · 09/03/2018 18:47

Good job no one is hysterical isn't it then.

It is sexist. How offensive you find that is down to you.

Is the ridiculous stereotype about feminists that they don't find sexism hilarious?

We're back to the thing of "shut up, nasty humourless feminist types, before the men get upset and decide to be even more sexist!"

TERFragetteCity · 09/03/2018 18:48

It's not offensive, it's not sexist.

How so...please explain how it would be funny if it was an International Men's Day banner? What would be the premise?

counterpoint · 09/03/2018 18:49

Am I the only one who would have ironed it before displaying?Confused

Both things seriously annoy: the incorrect use of "of" and whoever let women down by not demonstrating how perfect we are by being prepared against criticism.
Smile

What was so funny?

logicalmum · 09/03/2018 18:52

It's funny, the worlds gone too serious.

TERFragetteCity · 09/03/2018 18:52

It's funny, the worlds gone too serious.

How is it funny though?

OldHag1 · 09/03/2018 18:54

Someone in a facebook group posted that very same picture yesterday, he did suggest he went into hiding. my response was ‘that’s what you get when you ask a bloke to do something’. He was a bit Shock and that was the end of it.

Mikklehaha · 09/03/2018 19:02

When I hear questionable jokes like that I just laugh and say ‘what’s the weather like back there in the 70’s’ or some such thing.
If it’s a first offence then it’s better to call it for what it is instead of making a big fuss about this stuff. If there is a running theme made of it then it’s worth being a bit firmer.

callmeadoctor · 09/03/2018 19:11

Grin I find that funny. I'm obviously a terrible person and should go find something more highbrow and less offensive to laugh at Blush Grin
gettingtherequickly · 09/03/2018 19:26

Well this thread is depressing.......
Good luck to all those who found it funny, you are why our daughters will find it difficult to be taken seriously in the workplace.
A man sends around a meme to a work group about women doing the housework and you all thinks it's hilarious? FFS

AssassinatedBeauty · 09/03/2018 19:29

Most humour would be more highbrow than this, that's not exactly hard to achieve. I don't find it offensive, I find it tired, obvious, tedious, dull, old fashioned, sexist...
