Mumsnet Vs Real life.

Inspired by a comment on an active thread at the moment. The comment was along the lines of
"Only on mumsnet would you be advised this"

I've also seen it on a few threads where posters point out that only mumsnet would you be given this advice and never in real life.

So what advice/tips do you see mentioned on Mumsnet that you just don't think would be said in real life.

I'll start!
You can guarantee a poster will give the advice that OP needs to pack his bags and kick him out, on something really minor. They don't suggest being an adult and have a conversation first, it's straight away pack his bags and show him the door.

What other Mumsnet pearls of wisdom do we have?

Eltonjohnsyrup I have PCOS and mild acne due to it- not really huge pimples but very greasy skin and blackheads. I have been told by some not to eat butter or milk, whilst others say easting those things helps. My GP does not know much and my Endo dr has retired. So am on Facebook support groups but the advice given re: dietis so conflicting and confusing. aargh.

LeighaJ · 12/03/2018 23:00

OP: Vents about well off ex who sounds like a dbag and dodged paying child maintenance for 3 years and won't split school fees.

5th Response: "Why do you keep putting an apostrophe in fees? It's plural so does not require one."

Helpful. 🙄

RL: No one cares how you spell fees, just that your ex is a child support dodging dbag.

wheekwheekpiggiefeet · 12/03/2018 23:03

SteakSauce RE: the being screamed at in public, did you read the thread that was posted the other week by th poster who "screamed" at Michelangelo's sistine chapel ceiling! Laughed so hard a few drops came out (TMI, sorry!)

Bluelady · 12/03/2018 23:03

Yes, that made me laugh.

wheekwheekpiggiefeet · 12/03/2018 23:05

LeighaJ I do notice bad grammar but I work hard at restraining my inner grammar wankbadger. I know I have the potential to be one, so I try to back away gracefully

wheekwheekpiggiefeet · 12/03/2018 23:07

Bluelady I bet that OP did not really scream either. No way would anyone who was not locked up in a secure hospital actually scream out loud over a work of art.

LeighaJ · 12/03/2018 23:08

Wankbadger. 🤣 That's a new one to me.

The screamed at the Michelangelo thread was hilarious.

Bluelady · 12/03/2018 23:09

The best post on that thread was "I was so overcome at the Taj Mahal, I shat myself". I laughed out loud at that.

LeighaJ · 12/03/2018 23:12

I must not really appreciate art or places of historical interest since I've seen and visited many yet I've never screamed, shat myself, or even thrown myself on the ground in a fit of hysterical grief over any of them.

HangtheblessedDJ · 12/03/2018 23:12

Everyone on MN is 'livid' about stuff that they'd be mildly annoyed about in RL.

ShiftyMcGifty · 13/03/2018 00:00

Speaking of grammar.... wheek, I’m not sure what the hell you’re on about but are we going to need to go old school with a sentence diagram here? Admittedly, that sentence is a mess but it was...

Has anyone (who doesn’t have a disability) but feels disabled toilets are inclusive ever requested access to a toilet that needs a radar key?

feels disabled”

ShiftyMcGifty · 13/03/2018 00:04

anyone has requested access

Everything else is a modifier. I think. I’m trying not to google.

NinjagoNinja · 13/03/2018 01:17

Surely that's because in real life we have to moderate our opinions and emotions otherwise we'd have no friends left! An online forum allows people to say what they really think.

TheShaniaTwainExperience · 13/03/2018 01:43

Apparently if you leave your child in the car for 5 minutes you will be cautioned by the police

wheekwheekpiggiefeet · 13/03/2018 05:39

Shifty My grammar comment was meant to be seperate from the disability comment.

I was basically saying I am [skeptical] that anyone could decide they were disabled on the basis they felt disabled.

wheekwheekpiggiefeet · 13/03/2018 05:41

Though I have just seen a post on a thread about phobias on here claiming that some people may make up having phobias "for effect." I have heard it all now... Only on MN do people believe that there is some mass epidemic of people faking psychological conditions.

Aridane · 13/03/2018 06:00

On mumsnet, au pairs are hugely greedy and eat £100s worth of food each week. They are also annoying and want to sit with the family in the evening (instead of hiding away in their room) and est with the family ( where they eat even more food)

redandsilver · 13/03/2018 06:25

MN: Of COURSE you can start trying to conceive at 47, why wouldn't you? Dozens of women I know have had babies in their late 40's. 50's even! You would never know their age, as they look 29, and wear skinny jeans, and dye their hair. Having a baby in your late 40's reminds you to keep your hair dyed too.

What's more, my nana lived til 103, and was still working til she was 97, so you will have no problem with energy levels and being there 100% for your kids when they need you most in their young adulthood.

RL: Don't be so fucking ridiculous. Who the fuck would have a baby when they're nearly 50?! Are you mad?! Hmm

I also LOL at the amount of posters who claim to be in high powered £125K a year jobs, but are always on here.

MaisyPops · 13/03/2018 06:43

To be fair though MN love armchair diagnosing and it does read like label bingo on some threads (I say this as someonr who was diagnosed with anxiety years ago, did CBT and now have it under control).

RL - I can't stand sick, dealing with sick
MN - I'm emetophobic

RL - MIL has a few annoying traits and it bugs you.
MN - She's a narc

RL - someone has been a bit of a dickhead over a few things
MN - They probably have ASD

RL - Someone prefers their own company and isn't wildly fusses about lots of socialising
MN - I have social anxiety

RL - Someone gets nervous about situations, perfectly normal part of life
MN - I have anxiety... no it's not officially diagnosed but I'll mention it in my OP to avoid being told IBU and it makes an excellent drip feed later

RL - There's a child bullying my child abd they make it hard for my child to learn. I'lm going to give the teacher a call.
MN - No. Your child should befriend the bully. They probably have SEND. You calling the teacher is just excluding the poor bully further. How horrible of you.

Ilovemaryberry · 13/03/2018 06:47

Poster comes on to say how much they hate working and the drudgery of it all and you get 100 posters saying oh I love my job, I couldn't imagine not working and I never want to retire.
Followed by oh you need a new job. Why don't you just retrain. Go to uni and then apply for that dream job at 40.
Some folk make it sound so easy.
If I could change things I would want to become a vet....but I don't have the qualifications or the money to study. I have kids and it's not as easy to say ok today I'm going to start retraining because I hate working.
Pffft

wheekwheekpiggiefeet · 13/03/2018 06:50

I have anxiety...its not officially diagnosed but I'll mention it in my OP I have honestly never seen this happening MaisyPops. I have only seen people with anxiety on here which is not self diagnosed?

I agree about the other posters armchair diagnosing but if people declare themselves to have anxiety then why woudl we not give them the benefit of the doubt? I cannot understand why people froth about this kind of thing.

Yes I have diagnosed OCD, Borderline PD, PTSD and all that and I still do not get worked up over people who are self diagnosed. NHS funding in specialist mental health is limited, many people can't get a diagnosis or help, in spite of the fact that nearly all of us will get a mental health issue at soem point in our lives MaisyPops

wheekwheekpiggiefeet · 13/03/2018 06:51

IloveMaryBerry I have noticed a lot of vitriol against SAHPs on MN and it puzzles me. Why is it anyone else's business if they choose not to work? I think maybe it is jealousy because they themselves cannot afford to not work?

MaisyPops · 13/03/2018 06:58

wheekwheekpiggiefeet
I'm not saying it's worth frothing over and I'll give people the benefit of the doubt. But I've seen a few threads with references to unofficial mental health/SEND needs.

There is a difference between feeling down and being depressed, feeling nervous or wound up about a sitiation and having anxiety, not liking something and having a phobia etc. I think that gets forgotten when we start getting into everyone has a mental health issue territory.

lljkk · 13/03/2018 07:01

MN: Vegans are so annoying.
RL: What's a vegan?

wheekwheekpiggiefeet · 13/03/2018 07:09

How do you know they are unofficial though MaisyPops? Not being goady, just curious.
