To wonder why anything that is good for kids is seen as 'middle class'?

Where did this weird, slightly derisory attitude come from?

Organic food? Middle class,
Fresh air and countryside? Middle class.
Clothing made of natural fibres? Middle class.
Breastfeeding? Middle class.
BLW? Middle class.
Books? Middle class.

Why are all the positive stereotypes seen as middle class?

Think about working class parenting stereotypes and it's all negative: sky tele, Mac Donald's, PlayStation, obesity....

Something very weird going on with our perceptions....

I've not really heard of these things as middle class. In fact I'd heard BF as more working clsss due to the financial benefits. Same as fresh air, kids outside playing and all kids read books,, going to school is a legal requirement. Clothes made of natural fibre can even be attributed to the whole hippy brigade.

Personally I don't think there is a class divide in these things, it's just how you personally wish to position it. As you see by my example., you can argue it the other way if you wish to.

stuffstuffeverywhere · 22/02/2018 21:32

So, you have to be born to the middle class? Like the Amish?

Barbaraof Seville

I think with the food from scratch thing, maybe it is because of the stereotype that working classes live in cities surrounded by takeaways and all have hard graft jobs, too tired to cook when they come home?

backformoreanditsmyfault · 22/02/2018 21:35

Bluntness100 the whole hippy brigade See, maybe I am wrong, but I had always considered that hippies were originally bored kids form middle class backgrounds. Often university students etc

Eltonjohnssyrup · 22/02/2018 21:36

Well that must be wrong because money and class aren't interlinked apparently.

They bloody are. There’s a glass ceiling and certain ‘tribes’ of class you can’t enter just because you have money. But plenty you can. The Grayson Perry programme identified the ‘materially oriented’ middle class as one really entered by money.

backformoreanditsmyfault · 22/02/2018 21:37

I mean, I cannot see any respectable working class person siting around knitting their own lentil yoghurt and living in a yurt in their back garden. Or are those the Hipster hippies, not the real 60s/70s Woodstock originals?

Sprinklesinmyelbow · 22/02/2018 21:37

Yes. What do you think makes someone middle class OP
The “gov minister”- born middle class or working class?

RoyalBelum · 22/02/2018 21:38

Tessliketrees
no you are right, having no interaction with your kids because you are on a computer/tablet is a fantastic way to live. Next try watching tv whilst you have diner together

stuffstuffeverywhere · 22/02/2018 21:42

So, no social mobility whatsoever? Bit harsh!

I can write 'government minister' if you prefer? Is it the a abbreviation of government which upset you?

OP posts:
Sprinklesinmyelbow · 22/02/2018 21:44

I don’t really care. You still haven’t answered my question. Don’t you have an opinion?

Ahh because books are transparant. Kindles, as we all know, drag you in Tron Style so you are trying to get out of the book while your poor kids wail with hunger.

Next try watching tv whilst you have diner together

I would never have a TV, I had to move from my last home because the neighbour had one and the kids could hear it through the walls. Their ears literally bled.

stuffstuffeverywhere · 22/02/2018 21:45

What? About the Amish?

Not particularly.

OP posts:
Sprinklesinmyelbow · 22/02/2018 21:47

Ah right. So you’ve started a post which you’ve asked others to put time and energy putting accross their opinions on, and you can’t be bothered to post your own? Rude.

stuffstuffeverywhere · 22/02/2018 21:48

Bet you wiggle your fingers to make quotation marks in the air too. Have you got a kindle? Is it an established middle class kindle or a technical middle class kindle? Do they come in different colours so you can tell?

OP posts:
stuffstuffeverywhere · 22/02/2018 21:49

You've accused me of not having any point, yet I am rude?

Go home girl, you're on glue.

Breastfeeding is middle class?! 😳 I don't even know what that means.

BarbaraofSevillle · 22/02/2018 21:54

I think it's because it falls into the same category as healthy natural organic knitted lentils vs nasty processed crap that WC apparently prefer girlthere

thatgirlthere · 22/02/2018 21:59

Thanks for clearing that up @BarbaraofSevillle 😁 makes total sense now.

BarbaraofSevillle · 22/02/2018 21:59

Note that these food distinctions appear to be UK only. In many other countries, making your own spaghetti sauce is just something that everyone seems to do, rich or poor.

It seems to be a uniquely UK thing that poorer people stereotypically eat a shitty processed diet, because they are unwilling or unable to cook from scratch.

Just look at the furore when Jamie Oliver suggested that people may wish to copy the Italian poor and make a very cheap, quick and easy pasta puttanesca with some spaghetti, a tin of anchovies and some tomatoes and garlic. Costs very little, takes about 10 minutes, not particularly difficult and no expensive equipment or unusal ingredients required but was apparently to aspirational for the average poor WC Brit.

Note that what I mean by this is that the MC Guardian types are the ones who say that the WC find things like this unachieveable. The WC are probably quietly enjoying their pasta and anchovies without thinking anything of it.

steff13 · 22/02/2018 22:12

Why can't you see pictures on your kindle? I can on mine. I have three, they all show pictures.

Does it matter what class you're in?

BarbaraofSevillle · 22/02/2018 22:17

Does it matter what class you're in

Not really, especially seeing as no-one can agree on a definition, but a lot of people who describe themselves as MC would say that anyone who holds this view is simply delusional WC too naive and stupid to notice that the MC have one over on them, or something.

I'm happy with my lot in life, university education, professional qualifications, reasonably well paid job in a city with affordable housing and enough time and money to enjoy a wide range of interests. And not once have I ever felt held back because of my background, or who my parents are.

You see this describes me too but I am regularly made uncomfortable at the thought I may be perceived as middle class.

This thread has cheered me up no end.

BarbaraofSevillle · 22/02/2018 22:26

Well no-one would ever accuse me of being middle class Tess seeing as I talk like Mel B, drink pints and have tattoos.

Unless they see past that and peg me as one of those eco boho lentil weavery types because I recycle and don't eat at KFC or go on AI holidays to Benidorm.

Tessliketrees · 22/02/2018 22:31

KFC is amazing. I like to eat it while watching the telly.
