Where did this weird, slightly derisory attitude come from?

Organic food? Middle class,
Fresh air and countryside? Middle class.
Clothing made of natural fibres? Middle class.
Breastfeeding? Middle class.
BLW? Middle class.
Books? Middle class.

Why are all the positive stereotypes seen as middle class?

Think about working class parenting stereotypes and it's all negative: sky tele, Mac Donald's, PlayStation, obesity....

Something very weird going on with our perceptions....

Yes royal, it’s absolutely nothing to do with class.

OP your post was about some random parenting activities bring middle class. Now we know that you once sat in a room of people who you know to be middle class. What seems to be missing is... a point?!

RoseWhiteTips · 22/02/2018 21:09

Take the test

The results from BBC Lab UK’s Great British Class Survey reveal a brand new class system of seven groups.

Answer five questions...

Upper Middle Classes can work in certain well regarded professions.
Doctors/Lawyers/Engineers often hold that spot.

I wouldn’t call most doctors, quite a few lawyers and most engineers upper middle class. Upper middle class is mainly lower grade aristocracy (eg untitled younger sons/daughters etc.)

I would count doctors, engineers, lawyers etc as upper middle middle class (ahem).

stuffstuffeverywhere · 22/02/2018 21:13

@Sprinklesinmyelbow

You could trying read the rest of the post, about people believing the two groups of people are the same? They're on this thread, trying to convince us all that class doesn't exists and we're all the same, same culture, same life chances....

RoseWhiteTips · 22/02/2018 21:13

Seems to me it is not about you not having to work, but more about your cultural interests - which is where REAL BOOKS come in!

sorry, but I don't buy the avid-reader on a kindle theory. Not all books have been released on kindles for a start, some cannot be read properly on these small tablets, , and there are just not the same. You don't teach a child to read and enjoy stories on a kindle, you can't see pictures, you are missing a lot if you stick to Kindle exclusively.

I have a kindle, I use it, makes my bags lighter, but it's not the same. It's still cheaper to buy second-hand books, unless you borrow ebooks from your local library.

Yep. This makes sense*

No, it's total bollocks, apart from children's picture books. For novels etc, the reading experience is exactly the same, if not better and the screen size is very similar to a paper book. By this I mean actual ereaders, not the kindle app on a tablet. Huge difference.

A lot of the time it is simply snobbery, like those who wax lyrical about vinyl probably sneer that anyone who listens to downloaded music is inferior to their 'superior' collection of dusty, scratchy, cluttery vinyl.

And it's not always cheaper to buy second hand books than kindle books, many of which are 99p if you follow the offers (tracking websites like ereaderiq make this simple). And you don't have to go trailing round charity shops trying to find the wheat amongst the overwhelming chaff.

stuffstuffeverywhere · 22/02/2018 21:17

Where do kindles fit in? I haven't got one. Can't be arsed with another thing to friggin charge

RoyalBelum · 22/02/2018 21:17

As said before, class and money are 2 different things. Would you call a stereotypical WAG upper class? Would you call Kim Kardashian upper class for that matter?

The blue/white collar distinction is not true anymore, working in an office doesn't make you middle class. I have seen working class/ middle class and upper class people doing pretty much the same job in the same office!

Chwaraeteg · 22/02/2018 21:18

Because most of these things require either excessive money or excessive time, I will both of which the working class are short of (if middle class people are busy they can just outsource). 6 also, if you trends obviously exist whiting social classes sometimes as people are influenced by what those around them are doing.

Sprinklesinmyelbow · 22/02/2018 21:18

Rose White tips do you honestly, genuinely believe working class people don’t read real books? That is the most bizarre idea.

OP there are very few people on here saying there is no class system in the uk.

What I find interesting is how easy some people (like yourself) think it is to move up a social class. As though wearing organic clothes, breastfeeding and reading is going to make you middle class.

If you knew any proper middle class people you’d know how ridiculous that idea is

Tessliketrees · 22/02/2018 21:18

Clothing made of natural fibres?

Honestly have no idea what this means. It does sound middle classy to me though. I really don't see it as positive, it screams "I have fuck all better to worry about".

Sprinklesinmyelbow · 22/02/2018 21:20

Kindles don’t fit in anywhere 😳 they’re just the reason many people don’t have book shelves now. You know, technology.

JacintaJones · 22/02/2018 21:21

All this thread has convinced me of is that my bookshelves are a fucking mess and I need to spend the day on saturday making them look presentable.

I was never conscious of their disarray before now....

stuffstuffeverywhere · 22/02/2018 21:22

@Sprinklesinmyelbow

I never said they did. I was using them as aspects of parenting that are typical perceived as middle class.

What do you think makes a person, middle class?

So if I can afford a cleaner and a gardner, that would make me middle class?

Well that must be wrong because money and class aren't interlinked apparently.

I'm one of those people who think that class doesn't matter half as much as it did, and there isn't anywhere near the distinction any more. There are plenty of people like me who have as many middle class markers as working class, with a few upper class ones thrown in, enough to make class fairly meaningless.

stuffstuffeverywhere · 22/02/2018 21:23

That's ok then, we'll all stop talking about kindles then Wink

ShortandAnnoying · 22/02/2018 21:23

I did the class calculator and came up with new affluent worker, which does kind of fit us.

Tessliketrees · 22/02/2018 21:24

You read books? How chavvy, I only read vellum, I think it's really important that my children watch me curled up avidly reading a scroll.

BBC just told me that I'm established middle class

Me too! Even though I scored really shit in culture. I think it didn't know where to put me.

BarbaraofSevillle · 22/02/2018 21:31

It told me I'm established middle class too. It didn't ask about my working class heritage, so doesn't seem to place any importance on it, or the tool is useless.

Sprinklesinmyelbow · 22/02/2018 21:31

“What do you think makes a person, middle class?”

Background. Parents, schooling, area you come from, etc.

You don’t become middle class by working as a manger, having a detached house and eating organic Wink

stuffstuffeverywhere · 22/02/2018 21:31

Don't worry, sprinkles will be along shortly to tell us how wrong that it is Grin
