Why do dog people hate cats?

But cat people generally like dogs as well as cats?
Met 3 dog lovers this weekend who all happily admitted they sometimes kick cats off their land they hate them so much!

I’ve never met a cat lover who shows as much venom towards dogs as dog lovers do towards cats. Have I just been meeting the wrong people?

I really like dogs but cats by far make the best pets. No cleaning up their poo (mine buries his neatly in a hole in the garden), no taking them for walks and having to play with them constantly, plus dogs STINK! My cat is the sweetest, friendliest little soul too. He’s never bitten or scratched anyone in his life, and is too lazy to hunt.

TheGrumpySquirrel · 18/02/2018 21:43

Hmmm I don't think you can generalise - they all have different personalities. Pretty sure one of my cats is the dumbest creature ever to walk the Earth. I still love him though! Both my cats are super affectionate and loving. On the other hand 1 neighbour's cat is an uncastrated male who has literally bitten chunks out of my cats' tails to the point they needed urgent vet attention. No wonder the poor bastards are too scared to go outside anymore! My previous cat was more aloof and spent more time outside, he did always sleep on our bed at night though 💗

Dogs - I am definitely more scared of small yapping dogs as they tend to be more aggressive and are often untrained/spoilt, but obviously they can still really hurt you despite being small.

I'm a cat lover, I can tolerate dogs but find they smell more. I wouldn't say they are lazy pet though, my parents have a gorgeous, affectionate Bengal and she requires hrs of play a day and doesn't cope with them being away. She's quite intensive.

DSHathawayGivesMeFannyGallops · 18/02/2018 21:59

*cats are a lazy pet though, that should say

Nervousrex · 18/02/2018 22:42

I always have preferred dogs. I was never very keen on cats, what with the neighbours' ones winding my dogs up, shitting in my garden (and no, they don't always cover it up) and hunting the wildlife I take a lot of trouble to try and attract to my garden.

But since getting involved with wildlife rescue and rehabilitation I've come to loathe them. They do so much damage, and it's heartbreaking to pick up yet another terrified and damaged tiny animal that's been mauled and played with by a well-fed moggy that never had any intention of killing and eating it.

Farfel · 18/02/2018 23:26

Dogs are dumb and stink. I wouldn't kick one (unless I had to), but neither do I want to interact with one.

God forbid you'll ever need one, but if so, I wish you good luck with your assistance cat.

I like both cats and dogs, and sorry not sorry I think there is something very odd about hating an entire species. I can understand people have a fear of something, but to actually hate an animal, or even wish it harm is downright weird.

Also, cat hating is historically linked to misogyny.

Bakedappleflavour · 19/02/2018 12:31

Yes, quite. Really bizarre.

I also like both cats and dogs. However, I would not have a dog as a pet of my own because I am lazy and could not be arsed walking it every day in the pissing rain, and because I do not like picking up poo.

My cats of course poo in their litter tray but I scoop that up and flush it so it doesn't seem so bad.

However I like dogs very much and am always happy to interact with other people's.

Don't get all this "cats are aloof" business either; my two barely leave me alone from one minute to another. But they are indoor cats. No hunting and no shitting in other people's gardens. Win win.

Assistance cat! Grin

If the need arises I'm going to plump for an assistance horse. One who wears trainers.

Why do dog people hate cats?
wysteriafloribunba · 19/02/2018 20:51

I dislike cats. This is completely unrelated to the fact I like dogs.

Why do I dislike cats? Well the owners of all the cats I have come across don't seem to give a toss about the fact that their little darlings kill the birds in other people's gardens and shit in other people's gardens. If a dog did the same the owner would be in serious trouble. Cats though, it's fine Hmm. Cat shit isn't 'annoying' either as someone upthread suggested, it is a disgusting stinking health hazard. Pregnant women are especially vulnerable, as are dcs. Dog owners are fined if they do not clear up after their dogs. Cat owners have no penalty at all. Plus you can't even avoid it by staying in your OWN garden, and they just hop over the fence Angry. They are the only domestic animal where it is accepted that can roam on other people's private property.

Actually, reading that back it isn't cats I dislike, it is the owners (house cats excepted).

Bakedappleflavour · 19/02/2018 20:56

Three dogs broke into a neighbour's garden last year and killed her cat. Nothing happened to the owner.

As we speak there is currently some psychopath out torturing and killing cats for the lolz.

Why my cats are indoors. Therefore they don't kill birds nor do they shit in gardens. Do you also hate cats who don't do these things?

Bakedappleflavour · 19/02/2018 20:57

Also dogs kill birds and mice and rats and squirrels all the time. They're predators. Just like cats.

Catinthebath · 19/02/2018 20:58

I love and have had both but some of my family are dog lovers and look at my cat like they might a sewer rat. I think dog people just don’t “get” cats. They can’t handle the slight ear twitch a cat gives when it’s name is called whilst still keeping its back turned to you. My cat adopted me and she’s taught me about getting my own needs met. Be more cat, is my motto now

wysteriafloribunba · 19/02/2018 21:13

Bakedapple did you actually read my post? I quote:

'Actually, reading that back it isn't cats I dislike, it is the owners (house cats excepted).'

So, I have no issue with house cats.

Yes dogs are predators, but they are not out roaming in other people's gardens. Your neighbour's case is extreme, and very few people would have experienced similar. Cats killing birds in other people's gardens = an every day event.

Catinthebath · 19/02/2018 21:17

wysteria my cat was attacked in the road by a dog visiting a neighbour’s house. It clamped it’s jaw around her face.

Bakedappleflavour · 19/02/2018 21:41

It isn't extreme at all. My sister is a vet. She constantly sees cats who have been severely injured by dogs.

missmorleyme · 19/02/2018 21:45

I have always loved dogs and i never ever liked cats when i was younger. But thats all changed now, i was stroking a lovely freindly cat a few years ago, havnt seen it since unfortunately, and the friendly way it was towards me made me completely change my mind as every other contact i had with cats prior to that was horrific. Happy to say i now have 2 cats and 2 dogs and love them all.

Catinthebath · 19/02/2018 21:52

It needs responsible ownership all round. I know a number of dog owners who encourage aggression towards cats with that frantic whispered “where’s the pussycat” to their dog who then gets over excited. My own cat has lived with dogs large and small with no issues, including a rescue unused to cats. My cat wears a bell and despite being a tree climber doesn’t appear to have caught any birds. She has caught the occasional rat however. A large spider trotted across my floor tonight but I’ve trained her to leave them be. Is it normal to get large spiders this time of year?!

Catinthebath · 19/02/2018 21:52

Ps my cat always craps in my flower bed but I suspect this is coincidence

Bakedappleflavour · 19/02/2018 21:56

Wish my useless cats ate spiders TBH Grin
