Why do dog people hate cats?

But cat people generally like dogs as well as cats?
Met 3 dog lovers this weekend who all happily admitted they sometimes kick cats off their land they hate them so much!

I’ve never met a cat lover who shows as much venom towards dogs as dog lovers do towards cats. Have I just been meeting the wrong people?

@weallhavewings I meant about the dog haha thought you meant dogs Grin my bad. I think it depends on the animal

FrankUnderwoodsWife · 18/02/2018 16:02

@MargaretCavendish
"In my experience people who say they 'hate' cats (rather than just wouldn't have one themselves) come in two varieties: boring and uptight about their garden, or desperate for the emotional neediness of dogs to make themselves feel better. Both are pretty sad."

I am howling with laughter at this!

I have no idea if you meant this to be as droll and funny as it comes across, but if cats could speak, I imagine them to say exactly what you wrote.

PanGalaticGargleBlaster · 18/02/2018 16:03

I guess I fall into the dog camp, not all dogs though, I prefer ‘working’ dogs over yappy little ‘toy’ dogs. I don’t mind cats but they seem to have zero loyalty and have no issues buggering off to live with the neighbour down the road, dogs are loyal and at least seem to like having you around, cats are completely indifferent.

Ever seen a homeless man with a cat? (Don’t mention a street cat called bob, it was such a rare event they made a film about it)

Wingedharpy · 18/02/2018 16:06

Dljlr- "I've never grasped the appeal of having something you need to walk and clear up it's shit"....
and there we have it.
Cat owners don't have to clear up their shit because all the neighbours are doing it for them after they've shit in other folks gardens.

TheHolidayArmadillo · 18/02/2018 16:08

Because dog people are jealous of the freedom that cat people have because they can usually be left alone for more than 4 hours in one go?

Dogs are far too physically needy for me. I don't like people or animals that are that desperate for approval.

TheHolidayArmadillo · 18/02/2018 16:11

Ah you say that. I don't mind cleaning out a litter tray at all. Sorting cat poo is in no way the same as having to pick up a fresh out of the arse steaming pile of dog shit. In the pissing rain. In February.

busyboysmum · 18/02/2018 16:11

That's a good point. I like my space and I've got enough demands on my attention with a husband and 3 children.

FuzzyCustard · 18/02/2018 16:15

Yesterday I walked a bit of the SW Coast path. I hardly got to look at the view as I had to watch where I was walking ALL the time...I was pretty disgusted at the amount of dog shit there was all along the path. Bad owners, but for goodness sake, on a public footpath, clear it up!

And I hate the dog owners who let their dogs run up to you and jump up and then they say "ooh he's only playing". I don't want to play with your dag. Please keep him under control.

RaspberryRipple63 · 18/02/2018 16:21

I've noticed this too and it has puzzled me. I am a cat lover but I love dogs too,I just love cats that little bit more.I love their independence and the fact that they are fairly low maintenance. But at the same time,I do like the way a dog can make you feel like you're the most important person in the world. I've witnessed some pretty shitty attitudes from dog lovers towards cats though. I remember once,a few years ago,my DD showing a photo of her gran's cat to an uncle (on my exH's side, not my side,my whole family are cat crazy). He looked at it and 'If I saw that cat in the road,I'd run it over'. Charming.

RaspberryRipple63 · 18/02/2018 16:24

And to the people who say cats have zero loyalty,my cat will only come to me,my DD and DGD. She will not go near anyone else. And the idea of her going to someone else's house for food is laughable. She'd be too scared. She has no trust in strangers at all.

Adoodoobydoo · 18/02/2018 16:25

Interesting. I like both cats and dogs, but do prefer cats as pets. I got a cat recently and she is very loving.

Since I got her I have had a few dog owning people tell me that they don't like cats. I think it's weird. I think the way it's framed (not the op, but generally in our society) that you can either be a cat person or a dog person makes people think they have to pick a side.

Are you a mouse person or a hamster person? Doesn't have quite the same ring to it.

altiara · 18/02/2018 16:28

I like both and have both. I like my dog as he acts like a lap cat.

NotWeavingButDarning · 18/02/2018 16:28

I'm definitely a dog person, but also have a cat. I don't hate them, obviously, but he wouldn't be the one I saved first in the zombie apocalypse, iyswim Grin

altiara · 18/02/2018 16:29

I love hamsters too!

Haisuli · 18/02/2018 16:29

I am a dog person. I don’t hate cats but I do find some a bit scratchy and I think inside cats and living with cat poo inside the house is gross.

Queenoftheblitz · 18/02/2018 16:30

I love both but prefer cats. I love the smell of my cat when i bury my face in her fur. Dogs just smell nasty.

0lgaDaPolga · 18/02/2018 16:30

I’ve come across this a lot. I love cats. Dogs are cool but not my type of pet but the vitriol towards cats from some dog lovers is odd!

RavenWings · 18/02/2018 16:30

I love dogs, they're fantastic pets imo. I don't dislike cats really but I've no interest in them, I don't see the appeal of owning one at all. They creep me out a bit.

eachtigertires · 18/02/2018 16:31

I have one of each. I consider myself to be more of a dog person but of the two individuals I have, I prefer the cat. Weirdly, she’s a lot more loyal than the dog. The dog will go to absolutely anyone but the cat only likes us.

DontMentionTheWar · 18/02/2018 16:31

My cats are utterly loyal, they run to the door when I come in, follow me from room to room and lie as near as they can to me at every opportunity. My Ragdoll cuddles up on my lap as soon as I sit down. They are mainly housecats as I got worried by the cat hatred that seems to be so prevalent and decided to have cats that wouldn't bother anyone. They occasionally potter in our little high-walled courtyard but they show no interest in leaving.

To the person who mentioned that all cats scratch etc. My cats have never scratched me and I've had cats all my life. The only time a cat has scratched me has been accidentally. You can train cats, it's just that most people don't realise that you can, they believe the myth that cats do their own thing.

Laiste · 18/02/2018 16:32

raspberry - you've summed up my feelings really.

If i had loads of money and space i'd have dogs again. I like big dogs - used to have Great Danes. But they are a tie, and they take up a lot of room. Smelly when wet and muddy, big poos, big sicks, big wees big food bills, big vet bills, big car to get them around. I've done all the above without loads of money and with only just enough space and it was hard work. Loved them to bits. Wouldn't do it again though. Been dogless and free of the hassles for too long to go back to it i guess.

Laiste · 18/02/2018 16:34

DontMentionTheWar @ fellow rag doll owner :)

Twocatsonebaby · 18/02/2018 16:34

This just makes me miss my kitty now with you all taking how loyal your cats are. He used to follow me around the corner to school (an I used to have to carry him back Hmm) used to wait for me to come home from school by looking out the window and sitting up and meowing as soon as he saw me. Used to sleep next to me in my bed curled up when he was frightened of fireworks. He was ever so jealous of dp when he started coming over. But soon grew to him. He used to sulk when I used to stay over at DP's according to my mom. Such a loyal loving cat. I'll never have another like him

AccidentallyRunToWindsor · 18/02/2018 16:35

I think it's bollocks- if you truly love one animal then surely you can't hate another?

I am a crazy cat lady, I would like to be a crazy dog lady too but I don't have the time for one.

I would prefer people squirt my cats with a water pistol like @HainaultViaNewburyPark than actually harm them, they will learn that they don't want to be in that garden and leave the homeowner we in peace.

I'm also asthmatic, and allergic to cats. I still wouldn't be without my troop of furry idiots.

Notevilstepmother · 18/02/2018 16:37

It’s weird but I’m fine with dog hair and allergic to cat hair. It’s so bad that even my BIL jumper set me off once because he had been cuddling a cat, took me ages to work out what what’s going on and then when then jumper removed from the room it was fine.

My dad doesnt like cats because he likes to feed the birds and has bird houses and the cats kill baby birds. Seems a fair point. I must admit the idea of a pet bringing me a tiny corpse as a present is a bit eww.

So I don’t hate cats, I will entertain them until it gets uncomfortable but I’m a dog person.
