Why do dog people hate cats?

But cat people generally like dogs as well as cats?
Met 3 dog lovers this weekend who all happily admitted they sometimes kick cats off their land they hate them so much!

I’ve never met a cat lover who shows as much venom towards dogs as dog lovers do towards cats. Have I just been meeting the wrong people?

Waves at Laiste. Ragdolls are ace. Grin

Steeley113 · 18/02/2018 17:44

I love dogs and cats? In fact, I love animals in general. I have 3 cats, a dog, 2 rats and a rabbit. I want another dog but DH says no because we’re about to have our 3rd baby. Spoil sport.

Triskaidekaphilia · 18/02/2018 17:45

I love cats and right now my cats are my life. But I can see why people can be driven to hating them when they constantly shit in their gardens, especially since next doors dogs used to exclusively shit in ours! I still like dogs though, just hate when their owners are dicks!

TheGrumpySquirrel · 18/02/2018 17:46

I'm definitely a cat person and I don't like dogs - mostly because I'm afraid of them, and they often smell. If you don't like cats they are easily avoided and ignore you anyway but dogs are all up in your face whether you like it or not. You never know what you are dealing with, whether they are well trained or will jump/bark at you. As an adult I'm slightly less scared but still very wary.

HotelEuphoria · 18/02/2018 17:48

There are a lot of people that have dogs and cats though. I do find a lot of dog people don't see the point of cats as they are boring, obvs never had a cat or they would realise just how loving and entertaining they actually are and not the subordinate, eager to please dimwits that dogs are. Grin

namechange2222 · 18/02/2018 17:53

I love dogs but don't ( completely) hate cats as an actual animal. I just think it's so totally pointless having them as pets.
If I meet someone for the first time and they mention they love cats I don't want to continue to get to know them. Maybe odd but I don't generally like cat lovers

csigeek · 18/02/2018 17:53

I don't hate cats but I hate that they shit in my garden! I think that's most peoples' issue to be honest.

LuxuryMilk · 18/02/2018 17:53

see I don’t get the dogs are more loyal, cats are indifferent thing. My cats have been so loyal and will only come to me for cuddles. To someone visiting they probably seem boring as they stay out the way, but that’s because they are shy. Once they know you they are very loyal and loving. Dogs will go to anyone!

Purplerain101 · 18/02/2018 17:55

@luxury my cat is the same. Incredibly loyal and affectionate with me. He loves to be cuddled into me all the time and follows me from room to room.

Twocatsonebaby · 18/02/2018 17:56

I definitely think a cat has to choose you

honeyroar · 18/02/2018 17:56

I've got two cats and two dogs. I love them all loads, but I'd say the dogs were more part of the family and more fun, whereas some days the cats are all over us, the next day they ignore you! The cats are less tying though, and it's easier to have someone else pop in and look after them if we go away for a few days.

JaimeLannister · 18/02/2018 17:58

I am wary of cats. When I was 7, my friend's cat walked along the back of the sofa where I was sat and swiped at my face. It tore my eyelid. I didn't do anything to her and she had always been fine before.

I remember holding my hand over my eye and sobbing, scared of the blood. My friend's Labrador came and sat with me and I held the fur on her neck until my mum came.

Dogs all the way for me. Although I don't hate cats, (I don't hate any animal) I would never chose to own one.

honeyroar · 18/02/2018 18:01

LuxuryMilk my cats go to visitors too, particularly those that are scared of them! They sit and stare at them in a "you're scared, aren't you?" way. (Ive never quite understood why you'd be scared of a cat, but have met a lot of people that are!)

Bakedappleflavour · 18/02/2018 18:06

I genuinely don't understand why people are saying it's pointless having cats pets?!

LuxuryMilk · 18/02/2018 18:07

I can see where a dislike of cats can come from if you’ve been hurt by one. Their attacks can seem random but imo they do give off signals you just have to know what they are.
My old cat was horrid as a young cat. He would hide behind doors and wait for you to walk past, then jump out and viciously attack! I kind of like animals that can be a bit of a dick though Grin

honey that’s really cute!

Nice to see some ragdoll owners here. I’m getting mine soon and can’t wait. I’ve heard they are not like any other cats.

How utterly bizarre.

LuxuryMilk · 18/02/2018 18:07

Me neither baked. I think those saying that have never had a pet cat.

DontMentionTheWar · 18/02/2018 18:08

I don't get the 'I'm frightened of cats because they scratch' stuff. Dogs can chase, bite and kill you. Even when they are being friendly they can jump all over you. I like individual dogs but I am wary of them in general because they can do you serious damage.

vampirethriller · 18/02/2018 18:08

I have a dog but I like cats. My mum has two dogs and a cat (who used to be mine)

FuzzyCustard · 18/02/2018 18:19

Our two rescue cats are nervous of people who come to the house, apart from a couple of close friends, but they are totally loving and cuddly to DH and me. I don't get he "aloof" thing at all - and as others have said, it tends to come from non-cat people.

I had one cat who always knew I was pregnant before I did. And told me so with her changed behaviour. Amazing creatures.

MargaretCavendish · 18/02/2018 18:25

I don't get the 'I'm frightened of cats because they scratch' stuff. Dogs can chase, bite and kill you.

You're obviously right - dogs kill people, cats don't - I guess it's like people who are scared of flying but fine with being in a car - it's not rational, but fears often aren't. Also, I think a lot of people are convinced their dog would never, ever under any circumstances bite (one of the reasons they're more dangerous, as sometimes the owners turn out to be tragically wrong about that) whereas very few cat owners would honestly, hand on heart say they think their cat would never scratch.

BarbarianMum · 18/02/2018 18:25

Personally because I'm allergic to them and the little gits know it and make a bee-line for me. Even generally unfriendly cats do this, leading to reason 2: because they are annoyingly perverse. Dogs can be hugely annoying too, of course, but generly kn a very straightforward muddy paws everywhere sort of way. Reason 3 is the carnage cats cause with garden birds.

LakieLady · 18/02/2018 18:26

I'm a dog person but I love cats. Sadly, since I got my first terrier in 2000, I've never been able to stop any of them from chasing cats so have reluctantly resigned myself from having another cat until I'm too old to have a terrier.

Mind you, they say that terriers are the most catlike of dogs. They're not needy and frankly don't give a shit what you think of them. They're excellent at training their people so that they get exactly what they want. And they kill things, like cats do, which I'm not so keen on.

The current dog was nearly rehomed when she killed a hedgehog, but then she's excellent at keeping the rat population down, so I forgave her.

Summer1986 · 18/02/2018 18:29

Definitely a dog person. I don't hate any animal per se but I hate how cats poo in people's gardens.

HyenaHappy · 18/02/2018 18:35

I’m a dog person. I love cats though (typing this as one cat is purring away).

My cats are lovely but my dog is extra special to me.

I guess do fa have my heart a bit more than cats do as they just love their humans so much. Dogs serve such wonderful purposes with courage and loyalty, police dogs, therapy dogs, dogs that sense illnesses, military dogs. Absolutely wonderful creatures.
