Why do dog people hate cats?

But cat people generally like dogs as well as cats?
Met 3 dog lovers this weekend who all happily admitted they sometimes kick cats off their land they hate them so much!

I’ve never met a cat lover who shows as much venom towards dogs as dog lovers do towards cats. Have I just been meeting the wrong people?

There are two types of people...

  1. those who love all animals
  2. weirdos with no soul
madeyemoodysmum · 18/02/2018 18:38

I love cats and have 3 but I'm not keen on dog ownership for myself as too much of a tie.
It's a completely different kind of pet.

Scabbersley · 18/02/2018 18:39

Mind you, they say that terriers are the most catlike of dogs. They're not needy and frankly don't give a shit what you think of them. They're excellent at training their people so that they get exactly what they want. And they kill things, like cats do, which I'm not so keen on

I'd never thought of that before. Exactly right. My terrier is a prickly little bugger but sits on my lap on the sofa and sort of hums in his sleep like a cat purring. We always say he's like the cat we never had (our actual cat is aloof and unfriendly except for one of our dds)

RaininSummer · 18/02/2018 18:40

I Iove cats but would still chase them out of the garden if my dog didn't. They dig up my seeds and crap in the beds.

HildaZelda · 18/02/2018 18:45

I'm a cat person (have one myself) and while I don't hate dogs and would never mistreat them, I would never ever get one myself. I find them way too needy and. I'm sorry dog owners. but they do make your house smell of dog.

AvocadosBeforeMortgages · 18/02/2018 18:54

Dog person here.

I don't hate cats as creatures, but I am allergic so we don't get on very well together.

squoosh · 18/02/2018 18:57

I'm a dog person. I don't hate cats but I'm indifferent to them.

And cat households smell far worse than households with dogs who've been trained to piss and shit outdoors. Cat litter. Ugh. Cats rubbing their nethers all over the kitchen counters. Ugh.

sallyandherarmy · 18/02/2018 19:02

I unleash my Rottweiler if a cat dares to come in our garden.

Sorted.

squoosh · 18/02/2018 19:03

Actually there is one cat I hated. Horrible hissing flea bag. It belonged to the people who lived in the ground floor flat of a building I lived in. It moved in and tried to take over and would hide behind the bins and leap out hissing at the sweet old moggy who'd lived in the building for yonks. Insufferable johnny come lately.

VetOnCall · 18/02/2018 19:04

and not the subordinate, eager to please dimwits that dogs are.

Yeah, those police dogs, military dogs, guide dogs, medical alert dogs, medical detection dogs, therapy dogs, disability assistance dogs, sniffer dogs, search and rescue dogs... thick as mince they are.

I love all animals - just as well considering my job - but I am a dog person through and through, I adore them. In terms of my patients, I have been bitten by one dog and had a few other serious attempts, but not many. I have been bitten and scratched by lots of cats, and had countless attempts! I still like cats though, just not nearly as much as dogs.

Steeley113 · 18/02/2018 19:09

Best way to stop cats shitting in your garden is to own a cat and/or dog!

AdoraBell · 18/02/2018 19:10

I don’t hate cats. I just prefer dogs.

MsJudgemental · 18/02/2018 19:26

Love cats, dislike dogs but would never see one harmed.

OutyMcOutface · 18/02/2018 19:27

It's more of a lots of people hate cats thing. Not sure why-probably because of all the inconsiderate cat owners who let their cats loose to shot in other people's yards.

DontMentionTheWar · 18/02/2018 19:32

MargaretCavendish that's a good point. My cats would scratch if cornered or scared but I've never had a cat randomly scratch me.

It's interesting that the real vicious comments seem to come from some dog owners about cats. Cat owners never seem to be so vitriolic about dogs. Even in the years when dogs used to shit everywhere and their owners never seemed to clear it up. It wouldn't cross my mind to talk about killing or hurting a dog. Live and let live I say.

Cats don't smell. If you let them spray or don't clean their litter tray or leave out wet food then that will smell, just like if you don't clean a toilet or leave food festering on plates. Neither do they go on work surfaces if you train them properly. They generally won't upset the people who feed and look after them if they can help it!

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 18/02/2018 19:38

Used to like cats, till NDN got one. It shits all over our garden, lawn and flower beds. We can't even walk on the lawn any more. It LIVES in our garden even though I chase it off regularly. It's a relentless hunter. We used to have a garden full of birds, but it has just staked out our garden and chased/killed them till there are none left Sad Now I'm just waiting for it to die so we can have our garden back. I used to love seeing all the birds rootling around. Sad

Marriedwithchildren5 · 18/02/2018 20:16

Agree with above poster. I wouldn't have a dog as they bring that dog smell to a home. Cats don't. They're not as needy as dogs. They are just fab tbf! Cats rule!

juddyrockingcloggs · 18/02/2018 20:41

Yesterday I walked a bit of the SW Coast path. I hardly got to look at the view as I had to watch where I was walking ALL the time...I was pretty disgusted at the amount of dog shit there was all along the path. Bad owners, but for goodness sake, on a public footpath, clear it up!

Yeah, I feel like that about the number of cat owners who think nothing about letting their cats shit in my garden too!

FuzzyCustard · 18/02/2018 20:44

I was just countering the numerous "cat shit" threads/posts that are littering (see what I did there?) MN at the moment.

And the dogs must have all been on the lead (farmland) so no excuse for leaving it there at all.

durgha · 18/02/2018 20:54

I love both. And rabbits.

bertsdinner · 18/02/2018 20:54

I love cats. They are intelligent, subtle animals. I do like dogs, but I couldn't have one. They are too needy for me and I think they smell.
I do like it when a friendly dog comes bounding over though, they have a real joy of life, I always think.

DaysofWineandNeurosis · 18/02/2018 21:08

I love both. Growing up we had cats and dogs (and a host of other animals) and when we were first married and both worked full time we had cats. Then when the kids came along and I was a SAHM we had both again.
At the moment we live near two busy roads and a railway line so only have dogs.
I can't imagine hating any animal and it makes me sad that there are people who feel like that, whether it is cats or dogs.

marymoosmum · 18/02/2018 21:09

I'm a cat person but love dogs too, tbf I like most animals. Cats are great pets, I think they are great for elderly people tbh, they pretty much take care of themselves but are still some form of company.

SleightOfMind · 18/02/2018 21:14

I’m a dog person who loves cats but can’t have one right now

I think you’re mistaking unpleasant fuckers who happen to like dogs for dog people Grin

IAmNotAWitch · 18/02/2018 21:34

I like cats and don't like dogs.

Dogs are dumb and stink. I wouldn't kick one (unless I had to), but neither do I want to interact with one.

TBH I am not fussed about most animals, they leave me alone I leave them alone.

Probably why I prefer cats.
