Why do dog people hate cats?

But cat people generally like dogs as well as cats?
Met 3 dog lovers this weekend who all happily admitted they sometimes kick cats off their land they hate them so much!

I’ve never met a cat lover who shows as much venom towards dogs as dog lovers do towards cats. Have I just been meeting the wrong people?

I only like one type of cat- those that always use their litter-trays.
As for boring and uptight about their garden I can guess you haven’t ever had to scoop 25 of your neighbours’ cats’ shits out of the garden every bloody time you want to let your kids play out there, sit out in the summer or do a bit of weeding. It’s not about being uptight, it’s about being able to use our garden without a health hazard.

Purplerain101 · 18/02/2018 16:48

I’m 100% a cat person. Dogs can be lovely but I can’t stand the smell of most of them. I’d never want one (dog) as a pet but I’ll pet one if I see it and think they look cute

Flamingdinosaur · 18/02/2018 16:50

I used to be a cat person and then we adopted a dog for my OH's anxiety. I would say I am a dog person now but I love cats too!

Distractotron · 18/02/2018 16:52

Massively allergic to cats.
Dislike the way they smell.
Don't like the way they pretend to be friendly then take a swipe at you for no apparent reason! Used to be fooled by this but it has put me off saying hello to cats in the street that approach me.
Litter trays - what the actual fuck? Absolutely foul and people think it's fine not to immediately clean them vom.
The way they are able to get into non cat-owners gardens and shit on their grass. Foul. And unfair on people without pets.

UndomesticHousewife · 18/02/2018 16:53

I’m a dog person but don’t hate cats, if we weren’t allergic I might get one.

DannyLaRuesBestFrock · 18/02/2018 16:55

In my experience people who say they 'hate' cats (rather than just wouldn't have one themselves) come in two varieties: boring and uptight about their garden, or desperate for the emotional neediness of dogs to make themselves feel better. Both are pretty sad.

I hate cats and don't have a dog OR a garden. So shove that in ya pipe and smoke it.

imonaplane · 18/02/2018 16:58

I know lots of people who have both. I have 3 dogs. I like cats and would have one if I wasn't allergic to them.

Dobbythesockelf · 18/02/2018 16:58

I like both but prefer cats. I like to think that if they come to me it's cause they truly like me not just cause they are needy like dogs haha. My boy cat is the softest thing I know, cuddles up to my dd and other than when she sat on him has never scratched her.
I worked in a cat rescue for years and other than the feral cat that attached itself to my head I never got bitten or scratched. I have however been bitten by a dog.
My cats don't poo outside often, my boy cat much prefers the house anyway. I have a neighbour who insists it's my fault that other cats poo in his garden cause they are attracted to my cat but I'm unsure what he expects me to do about other people's animals.
What I hate is dog owners who let their dogs off lead, but don't control them. My dd got knocked over by a 'friendly' collie and a 'lovely' Jack Russel attached itself to my dh ankle. I'm trying to teach my dd to be gentle with animals and to respect their space so I think some dog owners should make sure their dog does the same.

flowery · 18/02/2018 16:59

I am a dog person but I like cats too. I could never have one though because-

1.DH is allergic
2.They bring half-dead creatures into the house Envy [notenvy]

  1. I would be permanently terrified they wouldn’t come home if let out.
Nyetimber · 18/02/2018 16:59

Most people in the village have dogs and a cat. We only have one dog and our cat died so are a bit out of kilter. In the country most people have cats as mousers.

DotForShort · 18/02/2018 17:02

I would say I'm a dog person but I also love cats. I love all animals. When I win the lottery (any day now), I would love to have a farm with donkeys, goats, chicken, sheep, dogs, cats, rabbits. . .

Mycarsmellsoflavender · 18/02/2018 17:02

I have one of each and sitting on the fence ( me, not them!)

The cat is graceful and a pleasure to watch. I love watching her bolt down the garden and marvel at the way she can jump onto a bit of table the size of a postage stamp without knocking anything off. She's very soft. She's quiet. She keeps me company whenever I'm outside doing gardening. Less restrictive with going away on holiday etc.
Cons: dead rodents brought into the house. Occasionally kills birds. Pukes a lot. Can be aloof. Only affectionate when she's hungry. If we go away for a weekend she usually ignores us when we get back.

Dog: can't be beaten for loyalty. Always pleased to see me even if I've only been out for a couple of hours. Responds to human speech far more than dcat and understands a lot of key words. More trainable.
Cons: Clumsy and boisterous. Noisier. Ours is a rough coated terrier so hasn't got the strokeability of the cat although he does love his cuddles. Muddy paw prints - much more than the cat.

Similarities: They both spend a lot of their day asleep. They both shed a lot of fur which requires extra vacuuming. Both are equally destructive with their claws particularly when trying to exit a closed door. And their poo stinks!

If there's 25 cat shits in your garden either you live near LOT of casts or you don't use your garden that much Grin

FourEyesGood · 18/02/2018 17:04

I love cats (don’t have one, though - DH is allergic). I loathe dogs and wish they didn’t exist. I simply cannot understand why anyone would want to share their life with a dog. However, I seem to be in the minority, as well over half of the people I know own at least one dog (I keep my dog-hating views to myself in real life).

fleshmarketclose · 18/02/2018 17:04

,it's easier to I'm a dog person but I'm scared of cats more than I don't like them. It's how they move silently and their claws that worry me. Ridiculous but I'd rather take my chances on being bitten by a dog than clawed by a cat. I think dogs are more straightforward,it's easier to see what they want, cats are a bit too self contained for me.

GeorgeTheHippo · 18/02/2018 17:07

Because we like the unconditional adoration and utter delight to see us that we get from dogs. And their smiley furry faces. Call it emotional neediness if you will. No one else is that pleased to see me!

Reddlion · 18/02/2018 17:16

dunno I have two cats but love dogs as well as all animals

malterbitty · 18/02/2018 17:20

Because cat-haters are dicks.

Cantspell2 · 18/02/2018 17:27

I have always had cats and when I was a child my mother had cats. Only once in my life did we have a dog and that was for a few years when I was quite young.
I don’t dislike dogs but I don’t ever want one or to interact with someone else’s.
I am a keen gardener but cats can be trained to use a small area set aside for their toilet needs. This is easy to keep clean and so my cats (and the one across the road) are happy to use it. I have just spent the afternoon in the garden working whilst the cats played. Two used the are for cat pooing before following me in. The other came in and used the tray in the utility.I have never dug into a flower bed and found cat poo but I do find plenty of other poo. Foxes, birds, hedgehog to name a few but just accept it as part of encouraging the wildlife to thrive.
I have never been into a house where a dog lives and not been able to smell dog no matter how clean it is but then someone may say the same about my cats.

Slightlyperturbedowlagain · 18/02/2018 17:31

LOTS of cats. 3 next door and about 10 others in the nearby houses. 25 shits per week is pretty average I guess, cats being the default pet when everyone is out at work. I love the 2 next door on the other side as they use their litter tray Smile Honestly it’s so bad some weeks I think about getting a cat ourselves to fend them off, but DH is not keen.

Chrisinthemorning · 18/02/2018 17:33

I’m a cat person. I don’t like random dogs but can become fond of friends’ dogs, once I get to know them. A bit like children really 😂
I have brought DS up to be a little nervous around dogs which I think is sensible as I think they can be a threat but he’s also ok once he knows they are not a danger.
SIL has one that’s a breed I’m not happy with and I’m not happy for DS to be around it without me there.

Gap1211a · 18/02/2018 17:37

Might have something to do with cats generally pooh wherever they like and the owners don't pick it up.

Dog owners always get a bad reputation if they don't pick up the dog pooh.

wolfmom · 18/02/2018 17:40

I know many dog people who really hate cats. I'm more inclined toward dogs, but, I love cats.

tryingtobethebestican · 18/02/2018 17:41

I have a dog and two cats and love them all! I was a cat person and had never had a dog before but now we have one I wouldn't want to be without.

wolfmom · 18/02/2018 17:41

I meant to add I know many cat people who really dislike dogs as well
