Someone At Door 😣

It’s 19.13, I’ve just put 2yo dd to bed, done all my housework, been at work all day, so about to have a lovely hot bath and someone is knocking at my door, door is locked, not expecting anyone, my dp is working nights. AIBU not to answer or even check who it is...I’m scared

I would look through my peep hole. I most likely wouldn't answer the door at that time if I was on my own. If its important they will come back. I live in a good area.

dizzy174 · 15/02/2018 19:32

it's your neighbour wanting to borrow 5 potatoes

BastardGoDarkly · 15/02/2018 19:33

It depends where you live as well. We're in the sticks, so the options of who it might be, are much shorter than say city.

I'd open bedroom window and see who it was (more likely one of kids would throw door wide open to weirdo hitcher with an axe )

gamerchick · 15/02/2018 19:33

I don’t open the door either because you just know it’s some god squad or chugger on the rare occasions that I do Angry

astoundedgoat · 15/02/2018 19:35

I think most people don't know the backstory with your neighbour - I'm not surprised you're freaking out at the sound of a knock on the door! Presume you ignored it - enjoy your bath Smile

PatheticNamechange · 15/02/2018 19:35

I wouldn't answer the door either. Not because I'm scared, but because nobody ever just turns up to our house and it will someone flogging something, asking for money, or spreading the word of the lord.

peachypetite · 15/02/2018 19:35

I never answer the door if I'm not expecting anyone.

Sammymommy · 15/02/2018 19:36

Surely, the dog would bark more if someone knocks at the door and you don't answer?

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 15/02/2018 19:36

I’ve got a Ring doorbell so I can see who’s there and, if necessary, tell them to bugger off from the comfort of my sofa!

norfolkenclue · 15/02/2018 19:36

Seriously 🙄

I couldn't not answer the door as I would need to know who it was. I'd hate to have already got in the bath because I wouldn't be able to get out in time to get the door before they left.

I once opened the door in my dressing gown at about 3am as someone was trying to get in. Turns out they were a friend of the flat above and hadn't gone up enough floors in their drunken state and though they were at their friends and didn't understand why the door wouldn't open. The look on their face when I opened the door was hilarious, they almost fell over and backed away while drunkenly shouting apologies.

TheHungryDonkey · 15/02/2018 19:38

Hopefully it wasn’t someone trying to tell you the roof was on fire

Chienrouge · 15/02/2018 19:39

Our amazon guy doesn’t come until about 8.30pm!
It’s your door, open it if you want and don’t if you don’t. I do think that calling 19.13 ‘late’ and being scared to open the door is a bit... odd.

MrsGrindah · 15/02/2018 19:39

Oh.. apparently there’s a back story...well how the hell were we supposed to know that?!

oneinthebox · 15/02/2018 19:39

It's 19:13. Where are you for that to be late? That's before the evening commute for many people.

Em308 · 15/02/2018 19:39

Last time I had an unexpected knock at the door (evening time) it was my neighbour wanting to let me know someone had tried to break into their house and garage the evening before. They were being thoughtful and neighbourly giving me a heads up. I find it completely bizarre a grown woman is too scared to open the door?!

Flatpackjackie · 15/02/2018 19:40

I don't open the door if I'm not expecting anyone, but that's because I can't be bothered with visitors.

The idea that the doorbell ringing is scary is ridiculous. Suggesting that 7.13pm is "late" is preposterous, OP!

strawberrypenguin · 15/02/2018 19:41

It’s 7 o’clock. Why on earth would you not open the door? What did you honestly think would happen?

Pingu49 · 15/02/2018 19:41

Don't you have windows to look out of?

MichaelBendfaster · 15/02/2018 19:41

Honestly?

If the door is locked how scary can it be?

What's wrong with a cheery 'Who is it?' through the door?

blaaake · 15/02/2018 19:41

I don't know anyone in real life who refuses to answer the door. Only on mumsnet.

SaskaTchewan · 15/02/2018 19:42

As above, why don't you open an upstairs window to have a look?

The last thing anyone would want is for a burglar to think the house is empty, surely.

rainbowunicorn · 15/02/2018 19:42

There are some weird people on Mumsnet. In real life I do not know a single person that would not just answer their door. On here loads of people won't answer even in day time. Really strange

CrustyCob · 15/02/2018 19:43

There is a back story, but you need to put it up OP, so that people "get it".
Hope you are ok. It is probably horrible woman next door as PP said.
