It’s 19.13, I’ve just put 2yo dd to bed, done all my housework, been at work all day, so about to have a lovely hot bath and someone is knocking at my door, door is locked, not expecting anyone, my dp is working nights. AIBU not to answer or even check who it is...I’m scared

Completely off topic but I think I love Olivander's cat. Grin

AuntiePat69 · 17/02/2018 16:14

Are they still there? Did you open the door?

Bexter801 · 17/02/2018 17:22

@AlexaAmbidextra I'm with you on that,I want a thread made solely on how that cat is getting on :)

Lalala2018 · 17/02/2018 21:22

@Dianag111 Well said. I had been suffering the symptoms of anxiety for years before I was diagnosed by my GP - it genuinely hadn't occurred to me that it wasn't normal to feel frightened by everyday occurrences.

When I first moved into my own house aged 22, I had a bad experience with an aggressive debt collector who was after a previous tenant and refused to believe I had no knowledge whatsoever of this individual. I was alone when he called and eventually a neighbour had to intervene to get rid of him. I can never rid myself of the fear I felt then.

I find it weird when the doorbell rings as these days you usually know who it’s going to be. The only people who normally nock are the window cleaned and door to door charity workers. Unfortunately there are horrible people about who may try and force entry. When you’ve got children in the house you need to feel confident when you open the door. It’s just a gut instinct to protect them I think. Understandable when it’s dark.

You don't have to be 'diagnosed' with anxiety to have anxiety

This is well worth a read. An article about diagnosed anxiety.

@spagbol11

Like PPs have said, you've not pissed off MN & you don't have to apologise for creating the thread. It would have been helpful for people to know about your MH problems (& in this instance, perhaps the CFN) so they could understand why you might struggle with something like this. It's perfectly ok to use MN to help you figure out if something is "normal" or your mind going a bit wonky on you - well, plenty of other people do, and nobody has to read/respond to your threads if they don't want to. Someone suggested maybe creating a thread to update as you deal with aftermath of CFN - would that be helpful?

Getting the sort of doorbell that lets you see who's at the door, as several people have suggested, seems like a good practical step in terms of reducing your anxiety when someone comes to the door. You can still choose not to answer it, but you have more information.

Fluoxetine can take several weeks to kick in, so hang on in there. And if it's not right for you, there are other options. There's no shame to taking medication for mental health problems & it's frustrating there's so much stigma attached - remember the cartoon I posted on your last thread? Ill is ill, whether it's your body or your mind that's playing silly buggers.

BoofayTheOompaLoompaSlayer · 19/02/2018 16:34

I highly recommend the Ring video doorbell. It's a little pricy but so worth the money. If I'm home alone and unsure who's at the door, I can accept the ring and have a look who's there before I answer. They don't even have to know you're looking at them.
It also helps loads with deliveries! We haven't missed one in ages! Have a look at Ring on amazon! 👍🏽

Hope you're ok OP. Update your old thread if you want to. Everyone was very sympathetic on that! X

God there is some horrible people on here
She’s scared why is that a problem for many of you try some empathy 😌

sportyfool · 03/03/2018 05:56

@BoofayTheOompaLoompaSlayer
I suggested this as we have had one for years ( husband works in the US and they came out a good while ago there .
It's such a great tool when me and the kids are on our own I'm alerted if someone comes near our front door too!

Probably the TV licensing people doing one of their essential inspections.
