Friends DH broken loaned item

welshmist · 09/02/2018 16:01

OH lent an electric meat slicer to a friend for a party, he broke it apparently, his DW has messaged us saying she has bought her DH a new one because he liked it so much, should she throw out our broken one. I paid £150 for the item as a present, I am annoyed that she is being so cavalier about this, DH says to say nothing but I feel bloody annoyed that it will cost us another £150 to replace it.

Well, did you ask her to replace it?

RadioGaGoo · 09/02/2018 16:03

Or even better, him?

MistyMeadow · 09/02/2018 16:03

What? You loaned something, they broke it, they're buying a new one for themselves, you have to get yourselves a new one and it's your hard luck??

Blankuser1992 · 09/02/2018 16:03

....they should be offering to buy you one!

Tell them you want £150 towards a new one because your out.

If they refuse advise that they clearly don’t value your friendship

DingDongDenny · 09/02/2018 16:03

Tell her no she should keep the broken one and give you the one that works!

RadioGaGoo · 09/02/2018 16:03

I guess you could ask to borrow theirs now yours is broken.

SuburbanRhonda · 09/02/2018 16:04

She broke your meat slicer so she bought her husband a new one?

Of course that’s not ok. Tell her she’s needs to buy YOU a replacement.

MavisPike · 09/02/2018 16:04

just ask her when are they going to replace yours as you use it a lot

mustbemad17 · 09/02/2018 16:04

My reply to that would be 'yes please do throw it out. Let us know when we can collect the replacement' bloody cheeky shits

LuxuryMilk · 09/02/2018 16:05

I’d be furious! Sod DH, tell her you are not happy about them breaking your appliance.

pasturesgreen · 09/02/2018 16:05

Your OH really needs to bring it up with them, that's not on!

sinceyouask · 09/02/2018 16:05

I'd act stupid and say "yes throw out the one you've broken, I won't need it now you've got me a new one to replace it... when are you bringing it over?"

DingDongDenny · 09/02/2018 16:05

Or just deliberately misinterpret her message and reply with - Oh you bought a new one, that's great. I didn't like to say anthing but it would have cost us £150 to replace it and it was a present

Snowydaysarehere · 09/02/2018 16:06

Ask what was it a bogof offer and when should you expect him round with it?

restofthetimes · 09/02/2018 16:06

2nd sinceyouask, I'd try that.

Whocansay · 09/02/2018 16:06

Cheeky fucking bitch! They broke it. They can replace it! Why on EARTH would you say nothing? They owe you!

I'd just message back and say, hi, apologies if any confusion, it was a loan not a gift, I would prefer you replaced it please if it's been broken and you're unable to return it in thr same condition it was lent in..

And leave it there.

It's really not on what she is doing, so call her on it. It's tantamount to theft. You do not borrow items and not return them.

Strongvegetables · 09/02/2018 16:07

Your ‘friend’ has the cheek of ten arses!

She’s trying it on.

RedDogsBeg · 09/02/2018 16:08

Why are you not asking them to replace the one they broke? How can they or your dh be so cavalier about it? I cannot believe they are so ignorant that they didn't immediately offer to replace/refund you.

Bluntness100 · 09/02/2018 16:08

I reckon they bought the new one to replace it and she's now wondering if she can get away with keeping it, hence the text.

Graphista · 09/02/2018 16:09

Cheeky fuckery knows no bounds!

No! They replace or give you the money to do so! Thieving gits!

Iamagreyhoundhearmeroar · 09/02/2018 16:09

She actually said she'd broken yours, will she throw it out, oh and by the way they've bought a new one which they'll be keeping for themselves?
Sorry, I don't believe a word of it.

WhatWouldLeslieKnopeDo · 09/02/2018 16:09

How rude! I'd be mortified if I broke something I'd borrowed. They should have offered to replace it or pay for it to be repaired.
