To be given milk to drink that had been open for 3 days!

Now I expect to be flamed for this, and for it to seem really silly to lots of people....

.... but I was diagnosed with IBS around 4 years ago now after being terribly ill on and off for a few months.

I was told to keep a diary to figure out what 'triggers' caused me problems. After around a year I worked out what foods and drinks caused me to be poorly.

I love milk, will drink 1/2 a pint a day on its own or have it with cereal, I rarely drink any hot drinks. However, I soon realised that if my milk was not REALLY fresh (used same day opened or day after) I got terrible stomach pains. So even thou it's more expensive I tend to buy a pint at a time for home use and I try to avoid drinking milk elsewhere.

I nipped in to see my sister today after work, she is well aware of this strange issue of mine. She asked me if I would like a drink. I said I fancied milk but if she didn't have 'fresh' milk i would have some water. She went to the kitchen and came back with a glass of milk claiming 'I have just opened it' I drank it and soon after left.

About an hour ago I started to feel really funny, stomach pains and grumbling pains Sad I couldn't figure out where I had gone wrong and rang my sister to check on the milk she had given me. She laughed and said it had been open a few days but it was fine so she didn't think anything of it and thought I was just paranoid Angry

AIBU to be upset with her? I didn't say much to her on the phone other than explain that I do think that could be why I may now feel poorly tonight Sad

Wow your sister's a hag, first she lies then she laughs that you're sick from her lie. I think a Facebook flame is in order.

Crispbutty · 07/02/2018 23:09

"@Crispbutty there is soya milk, almond milk, coconut milk, oat milk, cashew milk to name but a few - you can put them all on your cereal!!!!"

I'm sure I could but they all taste bloody awful to me

nocoolnamesleft · 07/02/2018 23:09

Problem with dairy isn't necessarily lactose intolerance. It can be cows milk protein intolerance. Can't remember the last time I saw a baby with cows milk protein intolerance that didn't have at least one parent with IBS symptoms. And amazing how many (not all) of those adults with IBS do way better when they cut out dairy. I don't think IBS is all one condition, but some people under the umbrella of IBS definitely have a major dairy issue, and it's well worth a few weeks of dairy free (not lactose free, dairy free) to find out.

It makes sense, really. Milk is designed for baby cows. We're neither babies now cows.

AlexaAmbidextra · 07/02/2018 23:12

Adults shouldn't drink milk? Who says?

LittleMe03 · 07/02/2018 23:12

Surely it's personal opinion on what people decide to eat and drink and not to eat and drink??

I will listen to opinions but will be a bit Hmm on being told not to drink milk for some of the reasons that have been given (which are nothing to do with, or helpful in any way to my PP)

I would never tell a vegetarian that they SHOULD eat meat. It's personal preference and everybody should have the choice to make these decisions without criticism imo

I'm going to have some cheese on toast, washed down with milk and followed by a yoghurt!

kateandme · 07/02/2018 23:20

exactly littleme .keep on with ur milk if its lovely and makes you feel good and you enjoy it then all the more I say.there is too little pleasures in life and its your choice if you like it.

Crispbutty · 07/02/2018 23:24

I'm the same with a glass of milk as well. It has to be ice cold and just opened or it makes me feel sick. But it's OK for tea/coffee after that. I'm weird as I am fine with dairy all day but can't have any in the evening without it giving me chronic heartburn or setting like cement in my stomach. I was lactose intolerant as a baby though and have had bouts of ibs for years until I cut out dairy after my evening meal and fingers crossed I have it under control now. Annoying when I go out for a meal though as cream based deserts or liquer coffees are my worst enemy sadly.

RidingWindhorses · 07/02/2018 23:24

Have you ever tried not drinking cows' milk at all for a few months? You've obviously tried lactose free milk and goats milk, but have you tired oat, almond or rice milk?

I've had IBS and dairy is one of the commonest triggers regardless of whether a person is technically lactose intolerant.

I think it's more likely that some days milk triggers direct pain and some days it doesn't. And you've attributed that to how old the milk is but really it's just the vagaries of IBS

fluffedupferretonsteroids · 07/02/2018 23:26

In my kitchen at work we are not allowed by food safety laws to keep milk for more than three days. So i can believe her. We can keep it till the use by date if unopened but opened is three days then chucked.

ArnoldBee · 07/02/2018 23:26

A couple of points:

  1. my mil gave my hubby a normal cup of tea and lied it was caffeine free. This isn't a lifestyle choice for him but if he had drunk it he would have ended up in hospital.

  2. Humans aren't designed to drink milk it's something we started with farming.

  3. with IBS im surprised you can drink that much milk but I don't live with your stomach.

  4. a lot of people that are lactose intolerant tend to have issues with semi-skimmed milk which is more common now as the lactose composition is different to that of full fat milk. Have you experimented to see if there is a difference?

blueletter · 07/02/2018 23:28

Why dairy is for babies Wrong, Breast milk and formula milk is for babies. Dairy is for anyone over 6mths who doesn't have an allergy or intolerance.

Dairy, like grains, are a common allergen that is only increasing. Many people react to casein, a protein found in dairy. Actually increasing or just better diagnosed?

According to some studies, it has a strong link to cancer and diabetes. Please provide peer reviewed links to these studies so we can judge for ourselves if there is a correlation between dairy, cancer and diabetes.

Pasteurized milk also creates an acidic environment in your body, which leeches calcium from your bones to neutralize the acid. If milk created an acidic environment in our bodies we'd be dead. FACT. Our stomach is acidic, our bowel is alkali. our vagninas are acidic, our mouths are alkali. Our bodies are fantastic at keeping all the relevant parts of our bodies at the correct PH levels. Knowing this.... this bit here is basically bollocks as is the first statement to be fair. This doesn't make immediate sense, considering that milk is supposed to be high in calcium. This causes joint pain and disrupts muscle recovery.

Raw, unpasteurized milk is high in calcium and has many enzymes and nutrients and its also teaming with bacteria such as Ecoli, salmonella, listeria

that are good for infants and children but it still contains the proteins people reacting to more and more. unpasteurised anything is NOT good for infants. This is why we sterilise bottles and make formula up with boiling milk then cool it. To kill nasty child killing bacteria.

Cow milk is not something humans were naturally meant to drink. but it tastes so damn good and we've been doing it for millennia and the human race is positively thriving with close to 7 billion adults eating dairy... minus a minority of vegans.

Cow milk is made to sustain a cow through it's infancy. TRUE STATEMENT KLAXON!!!!

Since most lactose from all mammals, including humans, contains a lot of similar properties, raw milk can be beneficial for infants and young children. we've already covered this. Stop trying to kill other peoples babies with stupidity.

However, once processed the milk is stripped of a great deal of it's nutrients and the good properties change. Again, once you process something, it takes away from the process your body is meant to do. please provide peer reviewed studies to support this claim. Also please note that heating (pasteurising) and cooling rapidly minimises the nutrient loss. IIRC milk has to be heated continuously for a longer period of time to lose significant nutrient quality.

Older children and adults do not need to be taking in any dairy at all. Can we live without it? absolutely but dairy is so damn good and a readily available nutritious food source.

Our bodies have already matured past the point that milk is beneficial. Its a nutritious food source so... NOPE.

Dairy makes older kids and adults gassy. with all the BS here... Id say things are looking pretty gassy.

This is a form of lactose intolerance. For some people, their lactose intolerance is greater and taking it in causes headaches, severe stomach pains, bloating, and diarrhea. nope. there is lactose intolerance and there is... well thats it. You either are or you aren't. There aren't different forms. Milk makes you happy or it makes ill enough to fill a zeppelin then shit through the eye of a needle.

Those people would be diagnosed with lactose intolerance well yes, people who are intolerant will be diagnosed as such.

however in a small way all older children and adults do not tolerate lactose well, that's why cheese makes everyone gassy. we could do a poll to test this 'theory' that cheese makes everyone gassy.

Furthermore, when cows are fed hormone and pesticide-laced grains those hormones and toxins end up in the milk as well. Again please provide evidence grain is 'hormone laced' actually wtf do you mean by hormone laced? everything has fucking hormones in it. Hormones are essential for growth and are naturally produced by humans and plants. IF you mean synthetic hormones please provide peer reviewed studies to support this claim.

Pesticides are part and parcel of crop growth. Whether we drink cows milk or grain based milk (oat milks etc) we will consume small amounts of pesticides but farmers aren't lacing their food with pesticides.

This has been known to cause severe mood swings and hormonal imbalance. the lack of real facts here is giving me mood swings. Also.... please provide peer reviewed studies to support this claim

The best way to take in dairy is from a local farmer, where you can get the milk unprocessed and know what the cow has been fed. As for adults, there is no actual need for dairy in your diet. we've already established raw milk is dangerous.

However, the human body is pretty tough, and a small amount of cheese as a garnish on a salad, or small glass of raw milk every few months can be a quick source of extra protein that is not harmful. Seriously... Milk is BAD and EVIL... causes CANCER and DIABETES but....its OK a bit on a salad isn't that harmful.

Fuck off with this pseudobollocks that has absolutely no evidence to back it up. This is just clickbait scaremongering full of misinformation and nonsense a 6yo could debunk.

HTH

IHATEPeppaPig · 07/02/2018 23:36

@blueletter this made me spit my oat milk out Grin

TinklyLittleLaugh · 07/02/2018 23:36

The problem with not drinking milk for a few months is you can totally lose your tolerence to it.

My DD developed IBS and worked out milk was one of her triggers. DS shortly afterwards started suffering from chronic diarrhoea, which totally disappeared when he gave up milk.

DP realised his stomach felt uncomfortable after breakfast so experimented with using the kids' lactofree products. He couldn't believe how much better and less bloated he felt. However a couple of months later he bought an ice cream when we were out with very nearly disastrous results. He cannot tolerate dairy very well at all now. Apparently you can lose your milk digesting enzymes.

LittleMe03 · 07/02/2018 23:40

@blueletter
That is pretty impressive GrinGrin

Your sister was uncaring.

But best if you just stick to milk you’ve personally opened and overseen, frankly.

It is “weird” so like PPs, I suspect giving up drinking any cow’s milk at all would be best for you.

An alcoholic may like wine, but it’s better for them to give it up.

A migraine sufferer might like Coca-Cola but if caffeine is a trigger, they should give it up.

blueletter · 07/02/2018 23:47

LittleMe03 and IHATEPeppaPig Grin

I have a severe intolerance to bollocks Grin

safariboot · 07/02/2018 23:47

I can sometimes tell by the smell and taste that milk has been open for a bit. It's not sour yet but it's not far off. Believable that might affect your IBS.

Try Cravendale if you haven't already. Stuff keeps fresh for ages.

No natural food is designed at all. Humans have evolved to be omnivores. If anything wild plants and animals would evolve to be bad foods for humans, though we've circumvented that by selective breeding.

Moreisnnogedag · 07/02/2018 23:52

Absolutely fab blueletter

OP I'd be cheesed off with my sister if she did this. It's one thing if you'd huff and puff if she didn't have any unopened milk but you gave an easy alternative drink, which she ignored.

As an aside my lovely lovely MIL buys a pint of full fat milk for me when we visit because she knows I prefer it. I'll happily drink skimmed milk in tea/coffee but she does it because I like it better with full fat. Now that's what families do.

TestingTestingWonTooFree · 07/02/2018 23:52

Your sister is a cow.

Have you tried Cravendale? It’s otdinary milk but filtered so it lasts longer. I wonder whether you’d get 2-3 days out of it.

Interesting that citrus makes you ill. dSis experimented with cutting out dairy/meat/wheat but eventually worked out it was orange juice that was causing her IBS symptoms. Perhaps it’s fructose that’s to blame?

TinklyLittleLaugh · 07/02/2018 23:52

A quick google suggests that up until a couple of hundred years ago, milk was only really drunk by children. Humans, like all other mammals lose their capacity to digest lactose once they are weaned unless they are given milk in childhood. It's only really the western world where kids are given milk.

ferrier · 08/02/2018 00:04

Oh my, this thread has given me such a laugh.
Dairy is the food of the gods. Full fat milk, cream and butter, my staple diet Grin

Giraffey1 · 08/02/2018 00:08

@blueletter I think I’m in love! Grin
OP, I think your sister was having one of those ‘surely a bit of opened milk won’t do any harm, I know better ‘ moments. She should have been honest, and I hope you are feeling ok now.
It does sound like you drink an awful lot of [evil] milk though and I’m surprised you are able to tolerate it with your IBS..
