To be given milk to drink that had been open for 3 days!

Now I expect to be flamed for this, and for it to seem really silly to lots of people....

.... but I was diagnosed with IBS around 4 years ago now after being terribly ill on and off for a few months.

I was told to keep a diary to figure out what 'triggers' caused me problems. After around a year I worked out what foods and drinks caused me to be poorly.

I love milk, will drink 1/2 a pint a day on its own or have it with cereal, I rarely drink any hot drinks. However, I soon realised that if my milk was not REALLY fresh (used same day opened or day after) I got terrible stomach pains. So even thou it's more expensive I tend to buy a pint at a time for home use and I try to avoid drinking milk elsewhere.

I nipped in to see my sister today after work, she is well aware of this strange issue of mine. She asked me if I would like a drink. I said I fancied milk but if she didn't have 'fresh' milk i would have some water. She went to the kitchen and came back with a glass of milk claiming 'I have just opened it' I drank it and soon after left.

About an hour ago I started to feel really funny, stomach pains and grumbling pains Sad I couldn't figure out where I had gone wrong and rang my sister to check on the milk she had given me. She laughed and said it had been open a few days but it was fine so she didn't think anything of it and thought I was just paranoid Angry

AIBU to be upset with her? I didn't say much to her on the phone other than explain that I do think that could be why I may now feel poorly tonight Sad

@Sarahrellyboo1987

Although, as I have said before during this thread! IBS does not mean everybody cannot consume milk, not everybody's triggers are the same! I know my own body, my own triggers and I was not asking for any opinions on this Hmm but thanks for your input

I can easily drink two or three pints of milk a day. I have a huge appetite and eat three big meals a day . I don’t ever snack but will drink milk between meals. Many people have told me that this is a real problem , but I feel fantastic . When i reduce my milk intake I feel worse , more lethargic less healthy.

Sarahrellyboo1987 · 09/02/2018 22:09

Milk nowadays is so much better than it has ever been - the pasteurisation process has endlessly improved. To the point where milk bought from the fridge can stay usable for a 2/3 weeks. I personally find it hard to believe that it’s caused by milk being open more than 1-2 days. 1-2 weeks maybe...but I find days hard to believe. And if it was caused by this then I would only drink milk from home...

LittleMe03 · 09/02/2018 22:15

@Sarahrellyboo1987

So you would open a bottle of milk, put it in the fridge, then drink it 3 weeks later? Envy

I tried giving up milk for a few months and put on so much weight. I think, drinking milk stimulates the metabolic rate . It is full of vutamins and calcium. I am a solicitor and have nothing to do with farming , but I know my body feels heathier with milk.

Bojangles33 · 09/02/2018 22:22

Dairy is only for babies?! Adults should drink milk?!?

You're all quite quite mad.

FortyTowers · 09/02/2018 22:46

@Gwenvamp

I have been told to ‘let loose for the holidays’

Lol 😂

nannykatherine · 09/02/2018 22:54

oh lordy
a snowflake

Scotland32 · 09/02/2018 22:55

Oh my, Mumsnet gets madder by the day!

SoupDragon · 09/02/2018 23:02

@Buttons44 for the best taste apparently

Ok. So why does the taste change? If it tastes different then it quite clearly is not exactly the same as freshly opened is it?

Twinkletoes2018 · 09/02/2018 23:18

My daughter has cows milk protein intolerance and I have horrific ibs I've since cut right down on milk and am heaps better I don't think it's the date of the milk that's your oroblem but the milk. I'd try soya or oatly milk

Sarahrellyboo1987 · 09/02/2018 23:23

Not really sure why you’ve bothered posting. You’re arguing with everyone who disagrees with you.
Yes - Cravendale is brilliant milk and often has a two week date. Which is great because I buy 2 pints and don’t have to throw it away. We usually use about a pint a week.

LittleMe03 · 09/02/2018 23:32

@Sarahrellyboo1987

Read the whole thread that started on Wednesday! Then you will realise that that is not true!

OP posts:
LittleMe03 · 09/02/2018 23:34

Oh and even cravendale should only be used up to 7 days of opening, regardless of the date. (And you did state up to 3 weeks....)

OP posts:
Sarahrellyboo1987 · 09/02/2018 23:46

You really do sound like a hoot....!

I have cravendale in my fridge that has a date of 24th feb. I will still use it after a week as I’m not a knit picking snow flake. It tastes fine and has never cause any issue for anyone in my household....but hey, if some mums netter with a bug up their butt tells me to stop I guess I should

LittleMe03 · 10/02/2018 00:00

Hmm I am going to take a guess at you choosing not to read the thread as suggested.

OP posts:
LittleMe03 · 10/02/2018 00:04

However, thanks for your pointless input Grin

When I want advice on consuming milk, I will post about that...

... however, really wasn't what the post was originally about.

It may be the gobby bits around the rim that hurt you. In any case, she was unkind and I would be angry with her. I am sorry.Flowers

And to all who are mocking OP for drinking milk, stop. It is unkind and all of us eat/ drink something that the rest of the world disagrees with.

MinorRSole · 10/02/2018 04:38

Apologies as I've not read the whole thread so this may have been mentioned. For those who suffer when they drink cows milk have a google of 'a2 milk'. It seems to be based on the theory that milk used to mainly contain this A2 protein but a mutation lead to A1 protein being more common instead. Small studies seem to indicate that intolerance symptoms improved by switching to this a2 milk. I have only skim read it but have heard of it before and would think it may be worth looking into. Nothing ventured nothing gained?

Chugalug · 10/02/2018 06:15

Tenbob.....
People always resort to insults ,when they know they've lost the argument....

PinkPanther27 · 10/02/2018 10:07

People aren't 'mad' for saying milk belongs to calfs. It's true. The dairy industry is one of the most cruel practice happening to animals in this day. That's not what the thread is about but it annoys me when I see people saying that people are 'mad' for pointing that out.
OP if you haven't already, I would try to get tested to see what is aggravating your IBS and yes she shouldn't have given it to you after what you told her.

PinkPanther27 · 10/02/2018 10:07

*practices

crispsandgin · 10/02/2018 10:19

People aren't 'mad' for saying milk belongs to calfs. It's true

iy's not true though. The milk belongs to the farmer. It's their product.

fantasmasgoria1 · 10/02/2018 10:42

Lots of adults drink milk and eat dairy ! I only have milk in tea and I do eat dairy but I find it odd people are saying adults should not drink milk or have dairy? Is that because those people are vegan?

sumsumsum · 10/02/2018 10:56

OP, I'd say your thread has taken off and become something else, but don't take it personally. I'm finding it fascinating. Mumsnet is most interesting when it casts light on this kind of difference in opinion and habit - in my very humble, milk-fed opinion. Thanks for starting it. Thanks
