To be given milk to drink that had been open for 3 days!

Now I expect to be flamed for this, and for it to seem really silly to lots of people....

.... but I was diagnosed with IBS around 4 years ago now after being terribly ill on and off for a few months.

I was told to keep a diary to figure out what 'triggers' caused me problems. After around a year I worked out what foods and drinks caused me to be poorly.

I love milk, will drink 1/2 a pint a day on its own or have it with cereal, I rarely drink any hot drinks. However, I soon realised that if my milk was not REALLY fresh (used same day opened or day after) I got terrible stomach pains. So even thou it's more expensive I tend to buy a pint at a time for home use and I try to avoid drinking milk elsewhere.

I nipped in to see my sister today after work, she is well aware of this strange issue of mine. She asked me if I would like a drink. I said I fancied milk but if she didn't have 'fresh' milk i would have some water. She went to the kitchen and came back with a glass of milk claiming 'I have just opened it' I drank it and soon after left.

About an hour ago I started to feel really funny, stomach pains and grumbling pains Sad I couldn't figure out where I had gone wrong and rang my sister to check on the milk she had given me. She laughed and said it had been open a few days but it was fine so she didn't think anything of it and thought I was just paranoid Angry

AIBU to be upset with her? I didn't say much to her on the phone other than explain that I do think that could be why I may now feel poorly tonight Sad

@sumsumsum

Thanks it's just frustrating when some MN's think they know me and my body better than myself.

Considering my AIBU was not asking if drinking milk was BU Grin

This thread is nuts. Even if it were conclusively and unanimously proven (which it isn't) that cow's milk was bad for adults, that really doesn't justify the faux astonished "Huh - you like drinking milk? How weird!" remarks. Because you know very well that adults eat and drink all kinds of things that are at least a bit bad for them. Would you say "Huh - you like chocolate? How weird - chocolate is bad for you! And anyway, surely sweets are for children? Surely you wouldn't go round to someone's house and have chocolate?!" Nope.

Haven't rtft but wanted to ask OP if you have tried UHT milk? UHT means ultra heat treated which kills off the bacterias so if it is those that you have a problem with, as the fact that you can't have the milk a few days after opening suggests, it could be safer/easier for you.
Your sister is totally BU, she made you sick because she ignored your medical requirements.

gussyfinknottle · 10/02/2018 17:09

Ultra Heave Treatment is what I call UHT. Fresh milk is lovely. I had no idea there were so many weird haters.
Of course they should have respected your choices , op. IBS is truly horrible.

MetalMidget · 10/02/2018 17:29

Are there any other animals that routinely drink milk beyond infancy?

Are there any other animals that make movies, or shoot cars into space, or argue on internet forums, or worry about the morality of what they eat?

Also, lol at all the people suggesting that they know the OP's IBS triggers better than she does.

Your sister was being unreasonable, OP.

crispsandginI didn't realise the farmers expressed the milk from their own nipples. No it's not their product. Cows only produce milk constantly because they're being artificially inseminated. The milk is produced for their calves just like our milk is produced for our babies.

FatBottomedGal · 10/02/2018 17:48

lets not put cow guilt on people.pleaase get over it!

Hmm that’s a really silly statement. The constant impreganation of cows and subsequential killing of males calfs isn’t something a lot of people can “get over”.

There’s really no reason why humans should be drinking milk from other animals - especially when it’s considered odd to drink human milk Confused

NotEnoughBiscuits · 10/02/2018 18:45

Milk is gross anyway (haven't drunk it or any other mammals breast milk for donkeys years).

However a friend of mine had crones, at the worst she was 6 stone and in hospital. She stopped drinking milk and no more problems with crones.

Milk is not good.

gussyfinknottle · 10/02/2018 19:12

Milk is a lovely drink . A deal I am prepared to make with the devil.

And yet when I was dairy free I was more ill than I've ever been. It's like we're all different, isn't it?!

AnnieAnoniMouse · 10/02/2018 22:01

MadMilkLady. Yep, it sounds bonkers.

...but so do lots of things that do/don’t affect people differently. I can eat cold cheese or cooked cheese, but I can’t eat it if it’s inbetween unless I want to spend the next 24 hours in the bathroom. Various other weird thing too.

Tell your sister she’s a monumental twat.

Helendee · 10/02/2018 22:04

Only on here can you get so angry over Moo juice. 😄

altiara · 11/02/2018 07:17

But the OPs question was not about milk, it’s about her sister lying to her!!!!! YANBU to be cross with her lying to you!

I have read a couple of threads in the past where I think the grandparents didn’t believe their grandson was gluten free (I think) and that poster had to take the DS to hospital as GPs would try and test DS as they thought the OP was making it up. And another with an adult that didn’t eat gluten. Always family members doing the testing.

So while your DSis is being a know it all shitbag to you, I think I prefer her to all the posters trying to give you advice on your IBS!

BedtimeTea · 11/02/2018 09:17

Dh & I are the same way. I only have milk in tea though.
