To be given milk to drink that had been open for 3 days!

Now I expect to be flamed for this, and for it to seem really silly to lots of people....

.... but I was diagnosed with IBS around 4 years ago now after being terribly ill on and off for a few months.

I was told to keep a diary to figure out what 'triggers' caused me problems. After around a year I worked out what foods and drinks caused me to be poorly.

I love milk, will drink 1/2 a pint a day on its own or have it with cereal, I rarely drink any hot drinks. However, I soon realised that if my milk was not REALLY fresh (used same day opened or day after) I got terrible stomach pains. So even thou it's more expensive I tend to buy a pint at a time for home use and I try to avoid drinking milk elsewhere.

I nipped in to see my sister today after work, she is well aware of this strange issue of mine. She asked me if I would like a drink. I said I fancied milk but if she didn't have 'fresh' milk i would have some water. She went to the kitchen and came back with a glass of milk claiming 'I have just opened it' I drank it and soon after left.

About an hour ago I started to feel really funny, stomach pains and grumbling pains Sad I couldn't figure out where I had gone wrong and rang my sister to check on the milk she had given me. She laughed and said it had been open a few days but it was fine so she didn't think anything of it and thought I was just paranoid Angry

AIBU to be upset with her? I didn't say much to her on the phone other than explain that I do think that could be why I may now feel poorly tonight Sad

Haha unnoticed I am, but I live in the kind of knit-your-own-granola place where kefir (and kombucha, and kimchi) have been de rigeur for a while. Ambridge trails in our wake.

I am most sceptical of Susan’s goat milk kefir. I feel that might be a tang too far.

petbear · 07/02/2018 22:50

@mydcaremarvel and @Whatshallidonowpeople

'milk is for babies.'

😂😂😂 GAWD, some people on here talk some shit!

I drink 1-2 glasses a day, and also have a couple of cappuccinos MADE half with milk!

It will cause worse IBS if you have too much of it though. (I don't have IBS though!)

MoeSzyslaksTwinSister · 07/02/2018 22:50

Both me and DP love milk. And now so does our DD.

Please tell me the cut off for drinking milk?

BeachyUmbrella · 07/02/2018 22:52

I think if you are that particular to how long the milk has been open, you might be best to take your own.

Haudyerwheesht · 07/02/2018 22:52

Today 22:31 blueletter

Allthecoolkids its the cost! I make my own oat milk every couple of days and DC drinks regular milk. I cant justify buying another type of milk that i'd end up throwing some away. When I am rich and DCS tastebuds have developed to like other milks a bit more I may try then

blueletter I read and reread that as I make my own cat milk ... Shock

petbear · 07/02/2018 22:52

@mydaremarvel, re your post at 22.50pm, I really couldn't be bothered to read all that made-up shit ... Gonna go get myself a yummy glass of milk now. Half a pint of it actually yum yum! Grin

Oysterbabe · 07/02/2018 22:52

Yabu because milk is gross however long it's been open.

MoeSzyslaksTwinSister · 07/02/2018 22:53

And all 3 of us could happily eat our way through the cheese aisle in the supermarket.

Sorry but the person saying adults shouldn't drink milk is so right - that milk is designed for baby cows, we don't need to drink that at all it's just unnatural!!

Passthecake30 · 07/02/2018 22:53

Can't stand it when people lie... I can't eat beef or lamb as it gives me an upset stomach. Dps mum has been known to cook roast spuds in beef dripping Hmm

Op, if I were you, I'd leave the milk drinking to at home. But don't you get lots of wasted milk if you can only drink from a freshly opened bottle?

LemonysSnicket · 07/02/2018 22:54

@Ontheboardwalk we were given free milk at break in primary school in the 90s/2000s

Unnoticed · 07/02/2018 22:55

Buxbaum - I’n tempted to try some kefir, but I have to stop saying it in Susan’s accent first! Very little lentil weaving around here, but I have spotted some kefir in the supermarket.

FreshStartToday · 07/02/2018 22:55

Bizarre answers! IBS is horrible, and your sister deliberately undermined you, treating you as if she knows your body better than you. We have had threads occasionally on MN where friends or grandparents don't believe in allergies and deliberately test out something they have been told someone can't eat. It's so patronising, as well as potentially dangerous.

Hope that you feel better soon.

LittleMe03 · 07/02/2018 22:56

@Passthecake30

If it's not drank by me then it usually is by DP or DS within a few days of being opened.

It's just me that's the fussy one Grin

Here is an article I found on why EVERYONE should drink COW'S milk!

See we can all find anything to support our argument CAN'T we???

Unnoticed · 07/02/2018 22:57

There are lot of things adults shouldn’t do babybobobear - I assume you are dairy free and leave all the milk for the calves?

IHATEPeppaPig · 07/02/2018 22:58

@Crispbutty there is soya milk, almond milk, coconut milk, oat milk, cashew milk to name but a few - you can put them all on your cereal!!!!

Oysterbabe · 07/02/2018 22:58

Are there any other animals that routinely drink milk beyond infancy?

babybobobear · 07/02/2018 23:03

Yes of course I am dairy free!!

A1Sharon · 07/02/2018 23:06

Do some people only ever eat what they feel they should eat?
What a miserable way to live.

AjasLipstick · 07/02/2018 23:08

Sharon I rarely eat junk food and I'm not miserable! I love "good" food...well made, from fresh ingredients. It's one of my greatest pleasures....far from miserable.

The junkiest I get is an ice lolly on a hot day.

kateandme · 07/02/2018 23:09

yes cows milk can be for fecking aynoe though.or is carrots just for rabbits and tuna just for cats and seeds just for parrots.blah blah fecking blah we can drink cows milk!

its isn't proven to be bad for you apart from those studies looking for it and I msure you could do one on lettuce or cabbags if u looked hard enough.
