Before anyone says it Iโ€™m an absolute idiot for not buying from gumtree in the first place but ๐Ÿ™„๐Ÿ™„ I wanted a nice shiny new one!

For first baby we got loaned an ICandy as we thought we were only going to have the one dc.

Then got pregnant with dc2 and HAD to have a new pushchair!

We got an single to double as had two under 2 and eldest child not walking when dc2 came.

As Sodโ€™s law would have it, dc2 hated the buggy and refused to sit in it after 12 months.

The whole thing including cost us ยฃ1100 including car seat bits.

Iโ€™ve been trying to sell it in gumtree for ยฃ400 and not one enquiry apart from one cf who asked if he could borrow it๐Ÿค”

Iโ€™m going to have to give it away for next to nothing, arenโ€™t I?

I have my 14 year old Mini that is probably worth less than ยฃ1500 but it is no way what I would call a โ€˜death trapโ€™. Someone recently shunted into the back of my very solidly built German badge/British made cat and it made me feel very safe and glad iโ€™d been in it. OTOH, my friend drives a Citroen C1 she bought from new that is about 4 years old and feels like it is made of cardboard.

Iโ€™d much rather have my โ€˜crappyโ€™ death trap of a cheap car than a newer one that is worth more but not as well built.

Iโ€™m of the second hand buggy brigade too - would love to buy brand new buy have found excellent bargains on ebay including a nearly new Mamas and Papas Urbo that was a grandparentsโ€™ and hardly used, probably worth ยฃ600 or more new. We paid ยฃ150 and are using in June again after 7 years for when my DC2 arrives. Iโ€™m all for buying new and investing in decent things when you can afford it, but happily buy second hand decent quality stuff too, only because I can afford nothing more.

NooNooHead · 05/02/2018 13:11

*British made car not cat!Confused

It is disappointing when you canโ€™t get what you want for something, but unfortunately, lots of buggies donโ€™t hold their value.

Unlike lots of people who have commented, I donโ€™t necessarily think that spending ยฃ1000+ on a buggy is stupid, if you can afford it. What does seem a little foolish, is expecting to get a large proportion of the money back. We spent ยฃ900 on our travel system, and did so, in the expectation that it was money down the drain.

lifechangesforeverinjuly · 05/02/2018 13:14

People seem to be unaware of the price of new prams.. a full travel system can EASILY set you back 1k. So people are not 'mugs' for buying them.

Luckily, Mothercare put my pram in the sale for ยฃ175 including carrycot - should have been ยฃ700 for what I currently have and will have been around 1k once I add on the car seat and adapters etc. Which I was prepared to pay.

The problem with places like gumtree is that people are looking for stuff less that ยฃ100 - ยฃ400 seems steep for a second hand pram that's out of warranty, as beautiful as the iCandy prams are!

BlurryFace · 05/02/2018 13:15

The problem is that the 2nd hand FB groups will be showing your ยฃ400 icandy next to a ยฃ20 Maclaren and a "free to collect" Mothercare. A lot of people buy secondhand out of necessity, not just bargain hunting.

Spudlet · 05/02/2018 13:27

All my prams have been secondhand - one was handed down to us and the other two were from eBay. Frankly, for what I pay for them I wouldn't get much brand new, but I've been lucky enough to get an excellent off-roader for under ยฃ200 and a perfectly acceptable buggy for less than ยฃ50. I personally wouldn't consider a secondhand pram for ยฃ400 though - there comes a point when I feel that you're paying more for a label than for the functionality of the thing. And also, the other reason I buy secondhand is that our prams have hard lives - I was dragging the off-roader around a ploughed field yesterday (don't ask!) and it's been up and down hills and steps and all sorts. I don't mind bashing it about because it was fairly cheap and I feel like I've got my money's worth, but if it had been more expensive I'd feel terrible about what I put it through!

Drop the price and I'm sure it will sell.

SleepingStandingUp · 05/02/2018 13:28

*lifechangesforeverinjuly its also perfectly possible to spend no where near that. Ours would habe been ยฃ500 but much cheaper in a sale where car seat was included with full travel system.

Tarraleaha · 05/02/2018 13:34

that's the point Spudlet, I have an "Off-road" buggy that must be 6 years old now, it has been everywhere - fields, mud, forest any rough terrain you would go on with a baby, and it looks brand new when it's clean.

I have tried so many buggies, and I am glad I could afford expensive ones, they really make a difference. It's like everything else, you get what you pay for.

hollowtree · 05/02/2018 13:39

A lot of people buy secondhand out of necessity, not just bargain hunting.

I'm afraid this is absolutely the case.

Eyes watering at ยฃ1100 new!

There's a little explanation of VED car tax bands. HTH

thank you very much!

computationalAspects · 05/02/2018 14:05

I'm here to help.

Tarraleaha · 05/02/2018 14:07

Eyes watering at ยฃ1100 new!
If you think a good pram last at least 3 years for a child - give or take - , that's around ยฃ350 per year including the car seat for the first year (which would cost around ยฃ150 at least for a newborn if bought separate). It's not that much.
it's even less is you subtract how much you will resale it for, even if it's only ยฃ200 or ยฃ300.

Lulu2106 · 05/02/2018 14:22

Sometimes you have to go for a more expensive option... I had a newborn and a 1 year old when I was looking to buy an Icandy peach 3 (double pram) I looked at gumtree and Facebook first to see if I could find a decent secondhand one. Bearing in mind they cost over 1000 New I thought I'd go for the secondhand option and was willing to pay ยฃ400-500 for an excellent condition one. I couldn't find one that was in good condition so ended up buy it New for just under ยฃ1200. Depending on the condition of your pram there is someone who is willing to pay that price because they about quality and know how much it would cost them New!

redmarkone · 05/02/2018 15:32

i think you should ebay it and just wait for a while. if no interest, drop price say ยฃ45 - 70. i dont think its a bad price. the brand is premium one after all. i was looking for an i candy cherry back in the day but there were none close enough to me to collect, i would have paid up to ยฃ180 - 200.

just for reference, im selling my 6 year old maclaren techno xt which i bought for ยฃ175 for ยฃ10-15, its worn in with a slight rip in rain cover but nothing i wouldnt be embarrassed to take out and safely push my kids about in.

i dont think you're a mug, your money, you do want you want.

Alphvet · 05/02/2018 17:26

You will be able to sell just not at that price. People can buy brand new for less

LVG85 · 05/02/2018 17:38

I suspect you answered your own question here and abu... you said yourself you wanted โ€œa nice shiny new one...โ€ so why wouldnโ€™t everyone else looking for a high value pram want a brand new one with, as many people have pointed out, a guarentee?

Alidoll · 05/02/2018 17:40

My DD is now 8 and still have her pram / pushchair under the stairs. Tried selling on gumtree and apart from a fraudster enquiring about a โ€œfriendโ€ picking it up if they could pay by PayPal, had no interest despite reducing the price several times.

Sorry but unlikely you will get anything near what you paid for the item Iโ€™m afraid.

AhhhhThatsBass · 05/02/2018 17:42

I bought a bugaboo chameleon from a local mums forum for ยฃ200 second hand but in good condition and sold it for ยฃ250. All my friends thought Iโ€™d spent the same as they had in JL.
Second hand is the way forward. Join the Facebook mums pages (especially in London. I spent ยฃ200 but would have paid ยฃ400. Make sure you give it a good wash. Gumtree is particularly rubbish in terms of lowball offers. Local pages better.

Elephantgrey · 05/02/2018 17:50

I have been looking at prams on Gumtree precisely for the reason that I don't want to pay ยฃ400. In my area people are selling prams for ยฃ70 and more designer brands for ยฃ150. In London designer brands do seem to sell for more second hand.

If I was going to spend ยฃ400 I would buy new as you would get the guarantee. Mothercare do a lovely travel system for ยฃ290. It doesn't have as many features as yours but not everyone will want that.

cutie101 · 05/02/2018 17:51

Just seen this. Put it on shpock. I used to use gumteee the whole time but recently nothing was selling on there, started using shpock and everything has been selling. It's a great little app

LillianGish · 05/02/2018 17:51

My DD is now 8 and still have her pram / pushchair under the stairs see in this case I canโ€™t understand why you wouldnโ€™t just give it away - either to someone you know or a friend of a friend or to a charity shop. When I had my kids we were given stuff and we bought stuff new, when Iโ€™d finished with it I gave it all away. I can understand if you are really strapped for cash and counting every penny you might try to make some money, but I canโ€™t believe someone who insists on having a new pushchair and can afford to pay over ยฃ1,000 up front falls into this category. Maybe itโ€™s just me, but I give away loads of stuff - old furniture to homeless charities, old clothes to charity shops. I donโ€™t think because you are well off you should just give away all your possessions, but I think when youโ€™ve had your use out of it passing it on to a worthy recipient or cause is quite a nice thing to do.

Linzbe · 05/02/2018 17:55

We brought our iCandy buggy (chassis, car seat, carry cot and stroller attachments) from Gumtree last year for ยฃ70! I wouldn't have spent over ยฃ150 on a travel system second hand.

Maireadplastic · 05/02/2018 18:02

You got good use out of it, didn't you? I don't understand the mania of reselling something that has done its job.

Give it to someone who needs it.

lougle · 05/02/2018 18:04

I bought an ABC Adventure buggy (3 seats) from New Zealand (ยฃ750 inc shipping at the time), and when I'd finished with it, I sold it on eBay for more than I'd paid for it in the first place (ยฃ850). So I think you can still do well with buggies, sometimes, if you take lots of pictures. That was even with a small split on the handlebar.

But then it's also supply and demand.
