Before anyone says it Iโ€™m an absolute idiot for not buying from gumtree in the first place but ๐Ÿ™„๐Ÿ™„ I wanted a nice shiny new one!

For first baby we got loaned an ICandy as we thought we were only going to have the one dc.

Then got pregnant with dc2 and HAD to have a new pushchair!

We got an single to double as had two under 2 and eldest child not walking when dc2 came.

As Sodโ€™s law would have it, dc2 hated the buggy and refused to sit in it after 12 months.

The whole thing including cost us ยฃ1100 including car seat bits.

Iโ€™ve been trying to sell it in gumtree for ยฃ400 and not one enquiry apart from one cf who asked if he could borrow it๐Ÿค”

Iโ€™m going to have to give it away for next to nothing, arenโ€™t I?

Another one here who recommends eBay.
I bought a bugaboo donkey for around ยฃ1100 and got ยฃ600 on eBay a couple of years later.

Are you suggesting I and others can't afford the ยฃ1000 and leave ourselves short to pay for it?

FairfaxAikman · 05/02/2018 11:05

We bought ours second hand. 2013 model - ยฃ1000 new, we paid ยฃ185 (plus cost of a new mattress).

I think there are two kinds of people - those who must have new and those who aren't fussed. The latter group are unlikely to spend a few hundred when they could get a new one (albeit a non- designer brand) for the same cash.

I have a second hand Uppababy Vista - ยฃ1000 new but we paid ยฃ185 plus the cost of a new mattress.

KerplunkChampion · 05/02/2018 11:13

Can anyone tell me why bugaboos keep their value second hand and icandy don't?

MaryPoppinsPenguins · 05/02/2018 11:17

I paid ยฃ1190, used it for six months and sold it for ยฃ700. eBay all the way!

Champagneandthestars · 05/02/2018 11:22

Icandy don't keep their value like bugaboos do. You probably won't get much. If you wanted a high resale you should have gone for a different pram.

McTufty · 05/02/2018 11:27

@kerplunk I donโ€™t actually know but it might be because the chassis on iCandy scratch really badly, and also maybe because the Cameleons are machine washable? Be interested if anyone actually knows the answer to this.

Tamularoom · 05/02/2018 11:29

Paying over ยฃ1000 for a pram was entirely your choice, but unfortunatley the resale for baby items is a lot lot lower than what they cost, particularly iCandy and Bugaboo pushchairs, I think the problem is that the "target audience" for these are normally those fairly well off and who like you want a shiney new one, the latest version etc.

Those in the market to buy a second hand pram are very unlikely to pay ยฃ400, no warantee, no knowing how it has been kept/looked after.

To me the iCandy look pretty much the same as an Oyster and you can buy one of these new for around ยฃ400.

Champagneandthestars · 05/02/2018 11:29

You'll all hate me, spent ยฃ1000 on first pram, then ยฃ1500 3 years later for DS2! It makes me happy, I use it every day and couldn't give a fig what anyone else thinks. In fact am Hmm at people who would buy and drive a car worth ยฃ1500. It would be a death trap!!!

JaneEyre70 · 05/02/2018 11:31

My DD bought a Bugaboo donkey second hand for ยฃ500 and she replaced the colour packs etc. She used it for a year, then sold it for ยฃ750. For her last baby she bought a Silver Cross Wayfarer and all the gubbins for around ยฃ600 but sold it for ยฃ200. Some just don't seem to hold their money that well, but there are some quite expensive iCandys listed on Ebay?

NeverTwerkNaked · 05/02/2018 11:34

lol @champagneandthestars I donโ€™t hate you. I expect most of us could spend that much on a pram if we wanted to but I can thing of about a squillion things I would prefer to spend it on. A lot of cheaper brands are just as good, youโ€™re just buying a โ€œlabelโ€ really. Plus my kids both preferred to be snuggled up to be in a sling as babies anyway

BoredOnMatLeave · 05/02/2018 11:48

I love mumsnet sometimes. Everyone who doesn't buy their Phil and Ted's second hand must be a mug.

I don't think there's anything wrong with you for spending ยฃ1000+ on a pushchair. I probably spent a bit more than that including the car seat. I love my pram, it is my favourite material possession.

However I don't think you'll get ยฃ400 for it. Your limiting your audience if it's collection only as people aren't as likely to pop over to NI, I know some people don't mind a couple of hours drive but a ferry crossing would be too much. Also looks like you've used it for 12 months! That's quite a bit of wear it would have had.

FingersCrossedHard · 05/02/2018 11:50

I don't personally 'get' spending a fortune on a pram for the sake of it.

I spent hours researching prams and travel systems for ds3 as I had very specific practical requirements.

I ended up settling on a Britax model which was a few years old (but a new one) and review-wise knocked spots off newer, double the price ones. I think we paid about ยฃ400, including carrycot, cosytoes etc.

When nowadays you can buy such good new systems for ยฃ400-ยฃ500, I think the number of people willing to pay that for second hand would be minuscule.

aabidah86 · 05/02/2018 11:53

A car under ยฃ1500 is a death trap? I've heard it all now!

FingersCrossedHard · 05/02/2018 11:53

And I'm a big fan of a second hand bargain - a pristine jumperoo for ยฃ20 second hand or ยฃ120 new for instance. No brainer. But most people would still choose new if they could and the only thing enticing them to second hand is the price...so make that too high and there's no chance.

Pittcuecothecookbook · 05/02/2018 11:57

I'm looking for a second hand one! Let me know where you list it. Accepting postal costs are about ยฃ30 and splitting between you and the buyer may help. I've seen some that include postage from around the UK and while I know sellers have just included the cost in the price, it does make me think of buying from them instead for ease...

0EatSleepTeachRepeat · 05/02/2018 12:07

Gosh there are a lot of judgemental comments on here!

How someone chooses to spend their own hard earned money is up to them! We spent about ยฃ1300 but that included our isofix base and car seat too. As for it costing what some people spend on a car, again it's an entirely personal choice!

If you are calling people names for how they chose to spend their own money it says far more about you than them.

computationalAspects · 05/02/2018 12:53

@Nicknacky

I'm saying that from what I've seen, people with lower incomes spend more money on things like Christmas presents and child's clothes and buggies than those with more money. Not relatively more or proportional to income, just 'more'.

People with more money may invest in better quality and expect it to last. People without a clue may spend ยฃ1k on a buggy for one child and ยฃ1.5 three years later on their second.

I say this as someone who sees value in some items but not in others. Our buggies / travel systems were about ยฃ350 iirc and we gave them to a charity shop. My children happily wear hand-me-downs but we pay ยฃ535 annual tax on each of our cars.

Bringonspring · 05/02/2018 12:56

We brought a double from e Bay for ยฃ250. Well used

givemesteel · 05/02/2018 12:59

I think a good idea for a charity shop would be to be more willing to buy more premium pushchairs (and other big ticket baby stuff) from people at a discount then make their money from selling it at 20-30% more than they paid for it.

I'm more than happy to buy second hand but what I don't like is having to schlep to someone's house, potentially have an embarrassing situation where I don't want the item after all on seeing it (or going into eg a smoky or damp smelling house) or having to haggle etc.

I'm terribly socially awkward.

The time will come when I will be selling expensive buggies and cots etc, and I'll have to deal with the social awkwardness. I can't afford to give it to a charity shop but I'd sell it at a discounted price to avoid hassle and awkwardness.

Nicknacky · 05/02/2018 13:04

The may be your experience but it doesn't appear to have any relevance to this thread. I bought brand new prams for both my kids, it is proportional to our income. Doesn't make me clueless!

Tarraleaha · 05/02/2018 13:07

sorry, but why do you pay ยฃ535 annual tax on each of our cars? Are they company cars and it's a taxable benefit?

SleepingStandingUp · 05/02/2018 13:08

Anyone who buys a ยฃ1100 pushchair is a mug. We got cheap ones used and after 3 months get the next one, ยฃ100 max, love not being tied to something worth more than a car.

But 100 every 3 months gets to 1100 very quickly. If they're still in a buggy at 2.5 that's a grand. If you have a second child you could be doing that for 4 or 5 years.

hibbledibble · 05/02/2018 13:10

It isnt surprising op.

If you wanted to get a buggy that holds its value second hand, you should have got a bugaboo donkey.
