Would this seem odd to you?

OP posts:
XmasInTintagel · 04/02/2018 19:18

If one of my colleagues did this I would probably log it with 101 just in case.
This ^ Grin.

Lweji · 04/02/2018 19:19

If someone is too ill ring in themselves i would have thought they would be too ill to be bothered going on facebook.

They may simply not be able to speak on the phone.

There is also the effect of time. They might have been too ill when they called and then felt a bit better later on.

Haudyerwheesht · 04/02/2018 19:19

Reverse?

FoxesSitOnBoxes · 04/02/2018 19:21

You should absolutely sack her

SleepIsForTheWeek · 04/02/2018 19:28

I was off sick and when I came back I had a message from a colleague mentioning that she had seen I'd been on FB while I'd been off. I was a bit Hmm about it.

WheresTheHooferDoofer · 04/02/2018 19:29

OP, does your place have a "ring in by X time" type of policy?

Because if I were glued to the bathroom at that time (for example), there is no way in hell I'd ring in sick while doing the business on the loo, I'd get someone else to do it.

There could be any number of reasons why it was someone else ringing in. Doesn't mean the person is not sick if they later are on FB.

Upsy1981 · 04/02/2018 19:30

I was updating FB when in hospital with appendicitis and just after I'd recovered from an appendectomy. It kept me sane in hospital even though/especially as I felt dreadful. Nice to have a bit of distraction if you're feeling grotty.

Aragog · 04/02/2018 19:31

When I was stuck in hospital I'll wit pneumonia having my phone for social company kept me going, it was my lifeline to real, life for a few days! I was ill. I couldn't breathe properly. I couldn't walk around. Dh had to call in sick for me as I couldn't say a full sentence without coughing badly. But I could life my hand up and press a few buttons in my phone.

Not sure what's so bad about accepting a FB friend request when off sick?

Is this a reverse thread?

weetabix07 · 04/02/2018 19:40

Unless the workplace is reflective of a totalitarian regime, no not all.

loobyloo1234 · 04/02/2018 19:41

Is this a reverse? And the OP was the one that got grassed up for doing this? Confused

WheresTheHooferDoofer · 04/02/2018 19:47

I could be wrong, but I don't think this is a reverse. And while the OP hasn't been back, they could be busy with mealtime, sorting family stuff, etc.

A lot of places still insist on an actual phone call and don't accept things like texts or online reporting. Calls rely on someone else being able to pick it up, and I've worked in places where people start at different times. It's not been fun trying to call in and hearing the call ring out and having to wait and try again while feeling like shit.

And how does accepting a friend request take any more effort than making a call?

AnnaMagnani · 04/02/2018 19:51

I would say no but it's slightly stupid behaviour on the part of the employee.

Yes there are sickness reasons where you would absolutely be able to be use Facebook but not be fit to work. But then you get into the dubious area of not being well enough to call in yourself.

In my workplace, you have to call in yourself. Colds, sore throats, migraines etc are not an excuse. If we really can't make out what you are saying then we'll say so.

Equally HR will pull up frequent flyers if FB behaviour seems not to tie in with being ill. There is no problem with going on holiday to Greece to get over your serious surgery if that is part of the time of you need but if you are supposed to be off with the flu and are tagged in at the pub, yes that is a problem.

twattymctwatterson · 04/02/2018 20:10

Clearly OP is the boss or would have been back to update. If so op YABVVU and are likely to end up with a grievance logged against you if you follow this up

cherish123 · 04/02/2018 20:15

No. Not weird - you may be too sick to work but alright to go online. However, if I was absent from work, I would not post online.

CandleWithHair · 04/02/2018 20:18

Interesting reading this. If I’m ever off sick I always studiously ignore FB for this exact reason, that I worry people might think I’m not really I’ll at all. Seeing all your responses makes me realise how stupid this paranoia is, and also the self imposed sense that if I’m off Sick then I’m not allowed to do anything online. Weird. 😄

BlueMirror · 04/02/2018 20:18

I don't think think it's odd. You could have a quick look on fb between bursts of diarrhoea on the toilet. I doubt anyone would want you at work though.

lostmyslippers · 04/02/2018 20:29

@MagicSweets really?? Honestly what is the world coming to??!! 0 tolerance!! FFS! I would hate to know you in RL! Sorry!

Shimmershimmerandshine · 04/02/2018 20:52

How bizarre. Now if she had posted pictures of herself sunning herself in Dubai while off sick then fair enough but just accepting a fb request HmmGrin

The thing is I doubt I'll be at work tomorrow and have been in bed ill pretty much all weekend but yeah I've been passing around on MN as it's a weird inconsistent lurgy where one minute I feel vaguely human then 10 minutes later I feel close to death.

Louiselouie0890 · 04/02/2018 20:53

Shall they state at a wall maybe?

Louiselouie0890 · 04/02/2018 20:54

Stare*

Thursdaydreaming · 05/02/2018 03:13

I'm pregnant and vomiting a lot. This morning I was sitting in bed vomiting in to a bucket as usual. It was taking ages. Someone sent me a text and I picked up the phone and read the text between spews. You only need one hand to hold the bucket you see. Had the text been a fb friend request I could have easily responded.

LeslieKnopefan · 05/02/2018 03:19

I have been so ill that I couldnt phone in sick myself - for example in a company where you have to call in before 9 but at that time I was vomiting.

Later on I have been well enough whilst lying in bed to use my phone.

The only time I raise my eyebrows is when people post on facebook that they currently have a migraine because when I have a migraine I cant lift my head off the pillow and have to wear an eye mask to keep even the tiniest bit of light out. But thats mostly people using the word migraine to mean a bad headache!

Also, when I phone in sick I always seem to feel the need to put a voice on like I have a sore throat even if there is nothing wrong with my bleedin throat!

I wish more people would stay off work when Ill and then maybe I wouldnt come down with half the bugs I get!

drspouse · 05/02/2018 08:22

What if you're in a coma??

I have immediate colleagues as FB friends but I post very little they can see.

Biscuit
Lockheart · 05/02/2018 08:28

I had horrific flu the other week. For a few days, the only two things I was capable of were staring at the wall or staring at my phone. I’d have accepted a FB request if I’d have got one during that time. Why wouldn’t I? I can assure you the only places I went whilst I was ill were the doctors, the pharmacy, and the shop on the 5th or 6th day.
