Just watched the clip of Jacob rees mogg at Bristol university, when a few momentum activists try to cause havoc and stop him from talking

Whatever anyone thinks of this man, I have to say he was pretty gutsy going up to them, considering they are all hiding behind Balaclavas and scarves and there wasn't any security there.
Most politicians wouldn't have gone near them, let alone try to talk to them

I like him. Yes his views are controversial and I don't agree with some of them, but at least he stands up for what he believes in

But yeh. In this country we now seem to have two choices. Tories who appear to be intent on screwing the U.K. for the benefit or their rich mates / their own careers or these lunatic fringe lefties who seem to have taken leave of all reason and responsibility. Neither is prepared to halt the insanity that is Brexit

How on earth did we end up in this mess?

Eltonjohnssyrup · 03/02/2018 08:31

Incidentally, you might want to bear in mind, Moseley, was a Labour Party politician for 7 years before setting up the BUF. He's one of YOURS makeourfuture.

Momentum and their antisemitism have a LOT in common with the BUF. A LOT.

makeourfuture · 03/02/2018 08:32

Momentum and the rest of the far left

Elton, we have not determine this at all.

Just dial back the breitbart, we will know more as the investigation continues.

No need to go full alt- right yet.

Fitzsimmons · 03/02/2018 08:36

As for the Momentum types....... It's what the left has become I'm afraid. They don't like free speech and are very fascist in their ways. Labour really need to get their house in order or they will be out of power for years to come.

A right wing nutter murdered Jo Cox. Point is that there are nutters on both sides, don't tarnish everyone on the left (or the right) with the same brush. And I speak as a paid up lib dem.

EveningShadows · 03/02/2018 08:37

Elton, “he’s one of yours”! Dear god, I’m assuming you’re on the right then? So you’re taking responsibility for Hitler?

What a childish simplistic framing of political views. No wonder our country is so screwed if this is the level of political debate.

bridgetoc · 03/02/2018 08:38

The dirty soap-dodging fascist Left despise JRM........ The sensible among us in this country cannot stand those Momentum types. Everything they stand for is anti-democratic and against free speech. Labour are lost at the moment.....

JRM will be a future P.M....... Why would anyone be shocked by this statement. It's already been mooted in the press, and he hasn't even been in the cabinet yet.

Theworldisfullofidiots · 03/02/2018 08:38

When people talk about JRM being 'strong' as opposed to May being weak (and by the way I think she is truly awful) you do realise he hasn't done anything. Not even a junior ministerial position as far as I know.

Tell a lie - he chairs the European Research Group (Eurosceptics) which is a Tory party within a party which is paid for out of MPs expenses. In other words it's paid for by the tax payer. (Possibly undemocratic and most possibly corrupt).

Squeegle · 03/02/2018 08:39

eveningshadow fortunately most people don’t think like that and there is a bit more understanding

Squeegle · 03/02/2018 08:41

Love it “dirty soap-dodging fascist left”, Grin, not sure you have any idea what you’re saying really bridgetoc, but thanks for the laugh

Rebeccaslicker · 03/02/2018 08:42

Guardian says they weren't students, were protestors who just wanted to disrupt the event, and were wearing scarves and sunglasses. And several of them scuffled with JRM at once.

What bold, brave individuals they must be.

Rebeccaslicker · 03/02/2018 08:43

I'm no JRM fan but I did like his response -"I'm a complete weed but I've had worse scuffles with the Guardian" Grin

makeourfuture · 03/02/2018 08:46

I'm a complete weed but I've had worse scuffles with the Guardian

Pretty sure he cribbed that from PG Wodehouse.

Eltonjohnssyrup · 03/02/2018 08:49

What a childish simplistic framing of political views. No wonder our country is so screwed if this is the level of political debate.

makeourfuture brought up Oswald Moseley and I pointed out he was a Labour politician. I didn't ask anybody to take responsibility.

And since you ask, yes my politics are right of centre. And I don't take responsibility for Hitler, but I do believe I have a responsibility to reject far right wing elements, make it clear they are unwelcome in the mainstream, support the police when they prosecute them, and condemn them when they intimidate or attack other politicians even if they are my opponents.

It would be lovely if the left would do the same with their extremists. I'm not holding my breath.

gert1e · 03/02/2018 08:49

In our current culture of standing up for ones beliefs being used as a cover for hate speech and general racism - no doubt being spear-headed by Trump, I'm not surprised by this view. The only sad thing is that people genuinely buy into this narrative.

Well said indeed!

dementedma · 03/02/2018 08:51

The JRM one which really made me laugh was in the election run up when he was being heckled and called "despicable" by a guy in the crowd. JRM left the stage to speak to the man and said "what is it you want to ask me?". Cue another rant whic again ended with "you're despicable".
JRM calmly responded "i think we have established that. Leaving my despicability aside, is there something you wanted to ask me?"

heckler completely deflated.

Hoppinggreen · 03/02/2018 08:51

I dislike him and would never vote for anything that put him in a position of power but I loathe Momentum and think that they are far more dangerous.
I think he was quite brave standing up to those awful bullies in balaclavas and not just hiding behind his staff

Eltonjohnssyrup · 03/02/2018 08:52

Elton, we have not determine this at all.

Oh, so who do you think it was? The militant wing of the hamster rights federation?

The free socks for secretaries movement?

A heavily delayed demonstration to free the Birmingham 6?

k2p2k2tog · 03/02/2018 08:54

I don't agree with a lot of what he says, but he has the right to say it. He has the right to go about his business without threats and intimidation, or being assaulted.

JRM is like Ann Widdecombe, very traditional in their beliefs and not afraid of stating them. Good for them. It takes all sorts and hearing an alternative viewpoint is a good thing, it sparks debate.

These protestors are just thugs.

BertrandRussell · 03/02/2018 08:55

I loathe him. But the way he was treated was outrageous- and I think he was brave to handle it the way he did. The democratic process is precious.

rocketgirl22 · 03/02/2018 08:55

I am absolutely horrified to see this, we are as a country on a very slippery slope if this is allowed to happen to our MPs.

I would like to see the thugs arrested and charged immediately.

After Jo Cox there needs to be far bigger penalties for attacking those that are simply doing their job.

I am a great fan of Jacob Rees-Mogg, I was desperately sad to see this happen to him. I feel he is a genuine, intelligent and decent man whom would day would make a wonderful and distinguished Prime Minister. IU don't agree with all of his views, but I am sure the same can be said for anyone elected.

FingersXssd83 · 03/02/2018 08:56

Ridiculous that the students wore balaclavas but if a sexist, homophobe, elitist tried to lecture me, then I'd probably give them a load of s*it too!

Rebeccaslicker · 03/02/2018 08:57

Well, he's like a character out of a P G Wodehouse novel.

He's still got a million times more integrity and bravery than some twit who thinks it's his place to disrupt an organised event and hide behind a balaclava.

makeourfuture · 03/02/2018 08:58

It would be lovely if the left would do the same with their extremists

Again, aside from the incriminating pie crust, we do not know who these people were.

Does your right of centre justice system allow for rule of law?

Rebeccaslicker · 03/02/2018 08:58

Fingers - it wasn't a compulsory lecture. If the students didn't want to be there, they didn't have to be!

Rebeccaslicker · 03/02/2018 08:58

Make - we don't know who they are in no small part because they hid their faces. Are you so desperate to support momentum that you condone that??
