To think that La La land is awful

Just that. We've put it on Netflix.
I wasn't desperate to see It, but you know, heard good things.
40 mins in and..well, I'm posting about how shit I think it is in here.
Do I need to give it more of a chance, or put Friends on?

No, YANBU. I'm a big musicals fan but was thoroughly disappointed. Although I did like the last 10 minutes very much.

FithColumnist · 29/01/2018 21:55

Dull. Almost as bad as Call Me By Your Name, which was incredibly pretentious, dull and stuffed with questionable plot choices.

LouiseBrooks · 29/01/2018 22:10

because it pisses on a genre I love from a great height.

I really don't know how to respond to this. I've been watching -and loving - musicals for more than 50 years and am totally baffled by this statement. Mind you I've seen some people say they hate it because they love musicals and others because they hate them. No wonder I'm confused! I also don't think it's miserable either, although yes the ending is sad - or at least not conventional. But personally I get a real high from some of the songs and the cinematography is glorious.

I've never seen a film get such negative reactions (and there are some stinkers out there)and I just don't get it. Just, I suppose, as many of you don't "get" the film. Maybe you all just expected too much? I tend to only go to films I'm sure I like, anything else I'll watch on tv.. Last year I only watched this and "Get Out", knew I'd enjoy both and I did.

Mind you I hated 'Out of Africa" , thought it was total shite from the moment Meryl said "I harrd a farm in Arrfrica" and everyone else raved about it so taste really is subjective isn't it?

^^ this

bruffin · 29/01/2018 22:24

I agree Louise ive love Musical Theatre and go about twice a month to the theatre.
I really did enjoy it and it was the LA i had been to a few months before, from being caught up in an LA traffic jam, to the Observatory and the Warner bros studio lot.

chaplin1409 · 29/01/2018 22:27

My dh and I a really went to the cinema to see it and it was so so boring. A waste of a night out.

LillianGish · 29/01/2018 22:27

I loved it but i had just got back from california and the film was in all the places i went to in LA Me too - and I suspect that’s why Hollywood loved it too, because it was about them! Not a patch on Singing in the Rain though and certainly won’t stand the test of time.

thegrinningfox · 29/01/2018 22:28

Yes it’s shit. Totally shite.

Graceflorrick · 29/01/2018 22:28

I couldn’t watch it, I was so bored I turned it off.

BackforGood · 29/01/2018 22:33

Absolutely, taste is subjective.
I remember 2 different friends, coincidentally posted on FB on the same day - one saying they'd just been to see La La Land and how great it was, and the other saying they'd been and left after 35mins as it was so dire. So I was mildly curious, but had no 'hate' for it. Only watched it several weeks later when someone lent me the DVD.
It was just dire though. No 'warmth'. Nothing engaged me (or dd who was watching with me) with the characters. Not even anything particularly appealing about the music.
I like all sorts of musicals - can watch Les Mis or High School Musical and enjoy both. Liked stuff from Chess to Fiddler on the Roof. But La La Land just had nothing.

AManWalksIntoABarOuch · 29/01/2018 22:41

Sooooo boring. Where was Doris Day for one thing?
I loved Lost In Translation Though.

DilysMoon · 29/01/2018 22:46

Thought it was awful, still cannot understand all the fuss about it. Watched it at the cinema.

ChristmasTablecloth · 29/01/2018 22:46

Aww I rather liked it. I'd watch it again.

What's with all the "I love musicals and Singing In The Rain is my faaaavourite film so I'm an expert" grandstanding on here?

Mominatrix · 29/01/2018 22:52

I really wanted to like this film and came away disappointed. It was a lesser homage to the Umbrellas of Cherbourg without the same charm. Seriously overhyped and overrated.

youngerself · 29/01/2018 22:52

Bored me witless and I was so excited after the hype
Mind you, as my favourite film is the deer hunter it's hardly surprising

Bellamuerte · 29/01/2018 22:57

It's atrocious. Neither of the actors can sing or dance well enough to be in a musical. The songs were virtually all rubbish. There was only one big dance number. The lyrics were mumbled and the performances were terrible. Imo it would have been a better film if they'd actually cast capable performers.

Pinkprincess1978 · 29/01/2018 23:21

I was the same, just couldn't get through it so turned it off.

I find that about many films that got a big awards buzz.

ThursdayLastWeek · 30/01/2018 07:42

I dont think it’s grandstanding Christmas.
I think posters are preempting accusations of film snobbery!

LouiseBrooks · 30/01/2018 13:06

What's with all the "I love musicals and Singing In The Rain is my faaaavourite film so I'm an expert"

Presumably because SITR is another musical set in Hollywood and it's 50 odd years old and on tv every year so we all have heard of love it.

Who knows?

My granny hated The Sound of Music, so you never can tell what people will think.

TheHolidayArmadillo · 30/01/2018 13:07

I think posters are preempting accusations of film snobbery!

I agree with this.

Eltonjohnssyrup · 30/01/2018 13:10

I hated it. Thought it was self congratulatory Hollywood wank.

SadieHH · 30/01/2018 13:10

It was Utter Shite. One of the worst films I’ve ever seen.

ArcheryAnnie · 30/01/2018 14:09

I kept on waiting for it to get going. I was waiting for a while. It's an emotional black hole of a film. Nothing happens and I didn't care about anybody.

Bananarama12 · 30/01/2018 14:11

Left the cinema half way through that film. Awful.

EggsonHeads · 30/01/2018 14:13

YANBU. I watched it to the end but I ended up just feeling a bit dirty at the end of it. I don't know why but it really made me uncomfortable.
