To think that La La land is awful

Just that. We've put it on Netflix.
I wasn't desperate to see It, but you know, heard good things.
40 mins in and..well, I'm posting about how shit I think it is in here.
Do I need to give it more of a chance, or put Friends on?

It's alright but Ryan Gosling can't act and performed his role with air of sarcastic sneering, he got on my nerves. Emma stone looked like a little girl to me, they needed someone with more sex appeal imo.

whateveryouknow · 27/01/2018 22:27

I also hated La La Land and after watching 45 mins of it, just stopped and never finished it really. I love musicals but this one was not my cup of tea.

CycleHire · 27/01/2018 22:28

Saw it at the cinema and thought it was ‘ok’. My expectations were high after everyone raved. I thought the ending was totally patronising - like we couldn’t have imagined the alternative for ourselves.

MakeMisogynyAHateCrime · 27/01/2018 22:28

It is shite.
If I had pay to see it in the cinema I would have been sorely disappointed.

viques · 27/01/2018 22:33

awful overhyped film, always happens near the Oscars. this year's overhyped film is Darkest Hour. great prosthetics, great outfits for Kristen Scott Thomas, rubbish script, more cliches than I could shake a stick at.

k2p2k2tog · 27/01/2018 22:35

I watched it on a plane last summer. Twice. To make sure there wasn;t something I was missing the first time.

It was OK. Average. Not the best musical I've ever seen, not the worst. Certainly didn't deserve eleventybillion Oscars.

Smurfy23 · 27/01/2018 22:35

You lasted longer than us! We did 10 minutes tonight and stopped. Not for me, sorry!

Busybusybust · 27/01/2018 22:36

It bored me rigid! I really disliked it - it seemed pointless.

HarrietKettleWasHere · 27/01/2018 22:37

I hated it, found it really boring, couldn't see the point.

I LOVE moulin Rouge though.

Spicylolly · 27/01/2018 22:41

I'm a musical addict and thought this was absolute shite, my two dogs crapping in the garden is more entertaining.

oneforwardtwoback · 27/01/2018 22:42

I enjoyed it more second time around, watching it with DS (11) in front of the TV, and teasing him about his reactions to it. It's a "nice" film - sweet and romantic - not the sort of thing he's used to watching!

First time I just felt ripped off because I paid £15 for a ticket at the Odeon and couldn't see what all the fuss was about.

The first 5 minutes is the worst of it though - if you can get past the traffic jam scene it improves, and at least if it's on tv you can fast-forward through the silly bits.

theliousmonk · 27/01/2018 22:44

I agree the love match didn't come off too well but I thought Ryan Gosling was incredible as a struggling, jazz musician and the fact that he mastered the piano for the role is simply mind-blowing quite frankly. I was so surprised when Emma Stone kept winning award after award and Ryan left with nothing! Shock

GrouchyKiwi · 27/01/2018 22:45

I love musicals and quite enjoy jazz. I hated LaLaLand. Self indulgent is the right description. Both dancing and singing were crap, apart from the John Legend songs.

DickTERFin · 27/01/2018 22:45

Probably only made it half an hour in. It's not even "bad" it's just "meh". I could not have cared less about the characters and the singing and dancing was lukewarm. Love a musical usually.

That said, hated Mama Mia and I went to see Moulin Rouge with a friend who absolutely loved it a whilst I was hoping to find some glass in my popcorn, just so that I could externalise the psychological pain.

Boatsonthewater · 27/01/2018 22:46

I thought it was pretty weak and derivative to be honest. Don’t understand what all the fuss is about!

DioneTheDiabolist · 27/01/2018 22:46

YANBU OP. I switched off after 35 minutes, I just wanted it to stop.

Mormont · 27/01/2018 22:48

I thought that Emma Stone really shone and Ryan Gosling had no charisma. The film forgot that it was supposed to be a musical. However I thought the ending was brilliant.

SingaSong12 · 27/01/2018 22:50

Generally I like musicals. Thought the opening sequence was great, pretty boring after that. I didn't think the leads were good singers or dancers.

gabsdot · 27/01/2018 22:50

I loved it. I think the songs are nice. I've been listening to the soundtrack today actually.
However I wish they had picked actors who could sing and dance well.
I did like ES and RG but the singing and dancing weren't great.

theliousmonk · 27/01/2018 22:51

I have met quite a few jazz musicians like Ryan's character so yes I thought he did OK. Grin

YouTheCat · 27/01/2018 22:52

I love musicals. I've loads of them on dvd. However, I didn't even manage to get through the trailer for this heap of shite. I also hate Moulin Rouge and Blood Brothers - just so crap.

BikeRunSki · 27/01/2018 22:54

It lasted about 10 mins with DH and I. So glad we saw it on Netficks and I did pay proper money to see it in the cinema.

I also love SITR.

SingingSands · 27/01/2018 22:55

I was SO disappointed in La La Land. I just didn’t get it and I love musicals. The characters just left me cold Confused

Eolian · 27/01/2018 22:59

I haven't even seen it but it sounds awful. I know I'd hate it. Is it worse than Les Mis ? I seem to be the only person in the world not to have watched Mamma Mia too.

Tringley · 27/01/2018 23:06

I'm not a huge musical fan yet I will recommend Crazy Ex-Girlfriend as one of the smartest show on tv (and Netflix). And a lot of the songs are just fantastic.
