Apparently this has already happened, back in July 2017. Shock

But the orange one try again...

They assume it will be a rapid news cycle and people will forget.

Perhaps that's one of the reasons the days of testimony in this case were so important.

“Leave your pain here,” Aquilina said on one occasion, in one of the most powerful instructions ever delivered by a presiding judge. “Go out and do your magnificent things.”

I am reading ‘To Kill The President’ by Sam Bourne. Had a conversation earlier with DH about how much it’s getting me down. It nips along at a cracking pace, like an action movie, but keeps presenting plot twists and events that you’d get cross with in an ordinary film because they’re so outlandish. Problem is, they all but direct lifts from Trump’s appalling behaviour in office. The MacNamara (= Bannon) rant with Bruton and the other guy about 3/4 of the way through has thoroughly depressed me. Much as I want to finish the book, I need a bit of light relief. I’m about to dig out a fluffy romcom on Netflix to restore my equilibrium.

lionheart · 27/01/2018 22:41

I watched some really soppy 'restore your faith in humanity' clips on You Tube the other day.

It was strangely effective (even the sports clips Shock).

boatyardblues · 27/01/2018 22:45

I seem to have alighted on some Hallmark Channel slop. Blush I’m clearly at low ebb.

Prepare to be wooed... ??Hmm

Amid turmoil, Trump seeking a reset with State of the Union

Aides say the president plans to set aside his more combative tone for one of compromise, and to make an appeal beyond his base.

The annual address is a big set piece for any president, a prime-time window to address millions of voters. Every word is reviewed, every presidential guest carefully chosen, every sentence rehearsed. The stakes are enormous for Trump, hoping to move past a turbulent first 12 months in office.

If any of you have access to Netflix, might I suggest the new series 'Dirty Money'? Episode 6 is particularly interesting. Grin

I couldn't, I fear.

Since Nunes fantasy memo contains classified information the Dems have better sense than to try to turn jokes between coworkers into crimes.
Most of Trumps advisers and staff at this time appear to be doing whatever it takes not to make themselves a target for obstruction charges. Makes it hard to get their next job.

The gossip question of the week is will the 1st Lady be there?

Vegecook · 28/01/2018 06:34

Just before I started furiously sharing The Independents article on TMay giving the NHS away I noticed it said 2017. Was that a typo. Is she travelling there soon? Can anyone verify?

OnTheDarkSideOfTheSpoon · 28/01/2018 08:19

It refers to “Liberal Democrat leader Tim farron” so must be from a year ago.

Lot of alarming stuff in here, but one q: why is Sessions meeting with Kelly about the memo? He is recused from the investigation it relates to. You can't dip in and out of a recusal - it's absolute.

A common thread ties many recently reported Trump incidents together: a president accustomed to functioning as executive of a private family firm who doesn’t seem to understand that subordinates have sworn an oath to the Constitution rather than to him.

THREAD: Excellent piece by @rgoodlaw on the pattern of deception across the Trump campaign. It's also a reminder why the crime of false statements is so important, and also telling, in this investigation

www.nytimes.com/2018/01/25/opinion/trump-mueller-russia.html

  1. There's a bizarre GOP talking point that Michael Flynn, who pleaded guilty to making false statements to the FBI, was convicted only of a "process crime," and that this is proof that there is nothing else there. Au contraire.
  1. I guess the idea is that interfering with the investigative process is no big deal. But "process" crimes like false statements, obstructing justice, witness tampering along with their judicial cousins, perjury and criminal contempt are fundamental to the rule of law.
  1. Being able to prosecute people for these things ensures the proper and efficient administration of justice and the legitimacy and enforcement power of the courts. It's a way to make sure that no one is above the law when there is an investigation and prosecution of a crime.
  1. This is why POTUS' pardon of Arpaio who was convicted of criminal contempt was doubly egregious. It was a slap in the face to the power of the judiciary, which is supposed to be a coequal branch.
  1. On the investigative side, say ppl who knew a terrorist suspect lied to the FBI to protect him. If it weren't a crime, guilty people or those who want to help them have no incentive to cooperate, which undermines rule of law (and wastes resources on false leads, etc.).
  1. Similarly, not having "process crimes" would encourage large-scale cover ups. The best strategy if you are guilty and it were NOT criminal to interfere with the judicial process is to, well, interfere with the criminal process. Why wouldn't you?
  1. Which highlights the larger point: If people are engaging in so-called "process" crimes lying, impeding investigations, targeting witnesses IT IS BECAUSE THEY HAVE SOMETHING TO HIDE. Innocent people aren't typically committing these crimes.
  1. So the next time you hear the "oh it's just a process crime" consider 1) that what they are really saying is that the crimes that constitute the pillars of the rule of law aren't important and 2) what does this person have to hide, to engage in this behavior at all?

The NY Times has been publishing very questionable material again, some of it on Holocaust Memorial Day

@OmanReagan
So...a lot of us gave up on the NYT (and the rest of neoliberal media, politicians, punditry) a long time ago as they promoted the Iraq War, hired a climate change denier, regularly glorify inequality, imperialism, etc. Save yourself time and listen to critiques from the left.

A question I see a lot of people considering today: How many times does a publication have to normalize white supremacy, anti-immigrant bigotry, xenophobia, and even Nazism before the entire paper should simply be labeled a fascist publication?

On Ross Douthat's article on Stephen Miller in the New York Times:

Denizcan James‏
@MrFilmkritik
New York Times: "In honor of Holocaust Remembrance Day, we wrote a puff piece about a sociopathic, xenophobic white supremacist who wants to get rid of all immigrants." [The actual article was titled: "On the necessity of Stphen Miller"]

NYT is now a white supremacist paper. The multiple Nazi puff pieces, constant pro-Trump PR, and praise for Miller on today of all days is not exceptional -- it's the guiding ideology of the paper. I don't think every writer there shares it, but it dominates coverage #Unsubscribe

Not the first example of NYT inserting links to hate sites in the text of articles. They also directed their readers to a site selling swastika gear:

The piece had a link to a website selling swastika merchandise. This was not nazi "normalizing" as much as it was nazi advertising. And it's only the latest example from NYT.

I can’t even begin to put into words how awful and just evil this is. Its going after non-violent people because they are easier to help ICE make their numbers. Plus many of these people have American born children.

Also these are Christians who escaped from RELIGIOUS PERSECUTION. Where are all those evangelicals?

Profiting from ICE detention centers as an elected official who claims to support the immigrant community is unacceptable. We will keep pushing Del Lopez until he makes an honest apology and sets this right.

If you're a constituent of Delegate Lopez fill out this constituent survey and demand he apologize, cut ties with ICA, and pay reparations!
