When the Trump admin announced yesterday it will NOT implement sanctions, it was effectively
openly,
publicly,
brazenly, and
with impunity
announcing it believes itself to be above the rule of law.
Did any GOP lawmakers indicate an intention to hold it accountable?

Some folks are mad at me for what I said in a thread I wrote last night, thinking it too grim.
This is coming from a (Democratic) U.S. senator.
(And she is one some “leftists” want to primary because they think she’s too “centrist.”)

Congress voted 517-5 to impose sanctions on Russia. The President decides to ignore that law. Folks that is a constitutional crisis. There should be outrage in every corner of this country.
At this point, the vast majority of folks who appear to have fear proportional to the threat we are facing are Muslims, immigrants, Black Americans, women, Holocaust survivors, Ukrainian-Americans, Russian dissidents, and historians.
In other words: largely the most vulnerable.
For those of you coming at me with “If you won’t tell us what to do to solve this, you shouldn’t be saying it at all”:
- Do not put that on me. I reject the mantle of savior.
- My job is to tell you what I think you need to know, not what you want to hear.
1/2
- Your job is to decide what actions are right for you: what privileges/resources are you willing to spend - and for whom? The answers will not be the same for all of us.
- Compassion matters. Listen to, connect with, and work on behalf of the most vulnerable among us.
2/2
When some people feel overwhelmed and scared, they tend to lash out and regress.
They understandably look for people to tell them what to do.
Here’s the thing:
THE ASCENDANCE OF AUTHORITARIANISM RELIES ON THIS REACTION.
Authoritarians WANT you to feel infantalized, dependent.
Democracy, on the other hand, challenges us to participate as mature, self-determining citizens.
(And, yes, I know the U.S. is a republic with representative and not direct democracy. Thanks.)
And to hold our elected representatives to account.
Democracy is NOT passive.

"Hey, hey LBJ how many kids did you kill today?" was chanted daily outside the WH and wherever LBJ went. Johnson recounts it as an action that really worked on him mentally. Time to come up w something similar
