😊

That?

I have to tell you that EVERY time I see it I get irritated.

Smug...little smug face with it's "cute" blushing cheeks.

I want to drop kick it.

What do you think it conveys when you use it if you do?

😅 what does this one mean? Is it sweaty? Why is the ‘teardrop’ by the forehead? I think I’m too old for emojis

😂🤣 and what about these two? Laughing and crying? Why are there two?
😭 and lastly, yes, this one, is it happy crying? Sad crying? What variety of crying? It’s all too confusing!

Lovemusic33 · 25/01/2018 12:58

🤣 rolling around laughing and crying?
😭 balling my eyes out (sarcastic)

EggsonHeads · 25/01/2018 12:59

Either smug or pleased depending on the context

Pepperedbeef · 25/01/2018 13:00

🤨 to my son to indicate I know he’s telling me a porkie

Queeniebed · 25/01/2018 13:02

I don't understand most of them - I wish it would explain what they were if you hovered over them

Ihatemarmite123 · 25/01/2018 13:12

It means embarrassed doesn't it?

I don't get this.... Biscuit why? It's not an emotion is it?

StopCallingMeShirley · 25/01/2018 13:12

Shock I am always looking for this one away from MN. I can't find one which conveys the same surprised face anywhere.

Ihatemarmite123 · 25/01/2018 13:13

Glitterball and this?

Mookatron · 25/01/2018 13:15

I like Hmm but in some conversations it reads like a teenage queen bee girl who's been paired with you in a chemistry lesson and is NOT HAPPY about it. Then it makes me want to punch whoever's used it.

ForFuckSakeSusan · 25/01/2018 13:15

@DaftCat 😅 = phew!

😱 = Shock

BertieBotts · 25/01/2018 13:19

The teardrop also comes from manga and is supposed to be a giant bead of sweat to indicate the person is sweating - so anxiety/nerves.

I think the sideways crying with laughter one is part of a later release and is meant to indicate ROFL = rolling on the floor laughing. Because later releases tried to incorporate more commonly found Western emoticons.

Here's the full list of the original set which was intended only for Japanese audiences. Anything added later is likely to be Westernised which adds a layer of confusion.

wintermonster · 25/01/2018 13:19

🙂 this is the one that annoys me the most

AnathemaPulsifer · 25/01/2018 13:20

🤣 is ROFL (rolling on floor laughing), surely?

AnathemaPulsifer · 25/01/2018 13:20

#oldskool

calzone · 25/01/2018 13:21

🙏🏻 This gives me rage......it’s for thank you apparently but I hate it.

wintermonster · 25/01/2018 13:22

If anyone wants to know what an emoji is on an Apple phone (there have been many that I've had no idea what they are)

Add those emojis to your name in your address book, then ask siri to call you.

He will say the full name and a description of each emoji

💩 = smiling pile of poo
🤓 = smiling geek wearing horn rimmed glasses with buck teeth

DaftCat · 25/01/2018 13:24

Thank you!! 😃😃😃

SoupDragon · 25/01/2018 13:26

You dontne d to faff abiut with addingthem to your phone book - switch on “speak selection” in Settings/accessibility and then you can just highlight them and choose speak.

Thehairthebod · 25/01/2018 13:28

Out of all the emojis, the android ones, the WhatsApp ones, the Facebook sticker ones, the mumsnet ones, this is still my favourite:

Hmm

It puts so much across! And there isn't an equivalent anywhere else!

Tbh though, I'm all about a GIF these days...

wintermonster · 25/01/2018 13:29

@SoupDragon that's a revelation! Thanks 😗

wintermonster · 25/01/2018 13:29
  • makes most of adding emojis that people question the meaning of
SoupDragon · 25/01/2018 13:33

I glad it was a revelation given the horrendous typos!

MissionItsPossible · 25/01/2018 13:40

Confused Annoys me even though I use it too because of the way it's used (of which I am also guilty of).

For instance:

"I go to bed at 7pm"

"You go to bed at 7pm?" Confused

Where's the confusion?

Pepperedbeef · 25/01/2018 13:42

thehairbod I love beautifully written prose but you can’t beat a good gif!

Mummyoflittledragon · 25/01/2018 13:47

😊 genuine happy smile still prefer the mumsnet one
🤤 I never knew it was asleep. I use it in jest that my brain is seeping out
😳 I love this one more than 😱. I think the first is if something says something about my behaviour (jokes obvs)
