To think Oprah being the potus would be amazing

Female, black and lesbian would restore my faith in the world. Trump's supporters would hate that and she seems far more suited than him. She would walk it right?

Aint Comparing the UK and the US is like comparing an apple and an orange. They may both be classified as fruit but they're hugely different in actuality.

lubeybooby · 09/01/2018 08:30

I'd rather Michelle Obama really but I could get behind Oprah for sure.

Gubbins - yes, but she did an astounding job as flotus and has the charisma and brains required by the truckload. She's amazing.

MissTeri · 09/01/2018 08:31

Oprah is a very good orator.

This however doesn't mean you would be a good president.

This. Hitler was an incredible orator and having him lead a country didn't exactly end well.

I also don't trust Oprah after her secret meetings about forced population reduction ... or was that just a conspiracy theory?

MinorRSole · 09/01/2018 08:32

How exciting would that be, we could have Sarah milican as our pm too. She wouldn't know what the hell she was doing but her speeches would be hilarious

I'm so glad we are breaking away from the old boring, people who have some idea of what they are doing shit. Hmm

juliesaway · 09/01/2018 08:33

the luvvies and sheep love it. And I love Oprah. But the presidency isn’t a popularit/celeb contest to be played amongst billionaire tv show hosts, or is it? maybe it is. Maybe this is what appeals to Americans. Feels very decline and fall in America. Still she’s black and a woman and possibly a lesbian too so that does fits a sort of narrative which tv news channels are eager to push, will be fascinating to see who does run against him in 2020 (assuming he’s not been certified to have Alzheimer’s by then)

juliesaway · 09/01/2018 08:37

Agree that people are clutching for anything now that Trump is debasing the office so badly and being beyond an embarrassment to the US

MyAuntyBadger · 09/01/2018 08:37

Yes op, and on that basis Jeremy Kyle should be our PM.

claraschu · 09/01/2018 08:38

I think we need a figurehead in the US, like your queen. We could elect our own king or queen every 4 years, who could be a ridiculous celebrity: he or she could live in the white house, give dinners, tweet crap for us to talk about, say dumb things for us to make fun of, and provide us with all the celebrity scandal and gossip we obviously crave.

Meanwhile we could have serious, hard-working politicians who could deal with international relations, racism, economic inequality, health care, education, and most of all, the terrible environmental crisis.

I think that since the US has such an impact on the rest of the world, any citizen of any country we are allied to should get a vote in the serious election, if they would like one. Perhaps to be eligible for this vote the non-US person should have to take a short test, which would consist of pictures that the person has to look at without feeling uncomfortable. I would have pictures of a gay couple with kids, a woman driving a truck in a short skirt, a man wearing an apron and changing a nappy, etc. To get a vote, a person would have to nod pleasantly at each of these images.

greendale17 · 09/01/2018 08:39

Michelle Obama would be far better than Oprah

CrazyExIngenue · 09/01/2018 08:42

Isn't that what we need in politics now though; more ordinary people (yes I know she isn't "ordinary" in one sense) rather than a polished politician who says all the right things and makes all the right noises but actually does fuck all?

Fuck no! Politics is a game. It requires intelligence, patience, cunning, compromise and poise in the face of insanity, bullshit and the mundane everyday running of a country. You wouldn't want to send ordinary people to the Olympics to represent your country would you? You'd want to send people who had trained and practiced and had experience.

Fekko · 09/01/2018 08:49

If I need to have my appendix out I will make sure it’s an experienced, qualified surgeon doing it. Not just someone who just watched every episode of Scrubs, and fancies the idea of wearing scrubs and yelling ‘scalpel, nurse!’

Roussette · 09/01/2018 08:49

Good god NO. The US does not need another TV star as President. She is not qualified, she has not come up through the ranks, she has not done public service. Let's hope the USA have learnt their lesson from voting in the Orange buffoon we have now.

Whilst I applaud her speech, she is not presidential material. Oprah used to be on C4 decades ago, her show was a lot of drivel at times and what about Dr. Phil, he was an idiot yet treated like some sort of god like guru. Oprah likes the sound of her own voice too much.

A POTUS should be a politician not a TV star. Lesson hopefully learnt

MyAuntyBadger · 09/01/2018 08:49

Op, seriously, why would Oprah be a better president than say, Bernie Sanders?

Taylor22 · 09/01/2018 08:51

If the US haven't learnt their lesson and elect another useless celebrity instead of an actual politician then there really is no hope for them and they've asked for all the shit they will inevitably get.

Parker231 · 09/01/2018 08:59

Oprah has made a very successful career for herself as a TV host and is an expert public speaker but she’s no experience as a politician. America has an idiot running the country, next time they need a seasoned politician with experience of domestic and foreign affairs and hopefully the voting public won’t make the same mistake again.

derxa · 09/01/2018 09:01

I prefer Donald.

Roussette · 09/01/2018 09:03

I think that desperation has set in for even considering Oprah. I know Trump is bad but why go down that route again with a TV star for the most important job in the world. Perhaps one of the Kardashians could go up against her?!

ColonelJackONeil · 09/01/2018 09:05

Fuck no! Politics is a game. It requires intelligence, patience, cunning, compromise and poise

That's why people hate politicians because they are a bunch of smarmy, backstabbing, liars.

Fekko · 09/01/2018 09:07

I just don’t ‘get’ the whole voting for personality over experience and track record. It’s nuts! I’m surprised Ronald McDonald hasn’t thrown his clown hat into the circus ring (sorry, but I had to run with the theme there!)

CrazyExIngenue · 09/01/2018 09:08

That's why people hate politicians because they are a bunch of smarmy, backstabbing, liars.

Well, they have a word for politicians who push through their agendas regardless of the people they govern. Dictators.

Gingernaut · 09/01/2018 09:17

I'd vote for Bernie.

If I was American. Blush

Eltonjohnssyrup · 09/01/2018 09:19

I think Trump may have jumped the shark in this sense.

People were fed up with politicians so they went for a non-politician. This may not have worked out so well.

However Trump is doing well in terms of the economy and employment figures and there are rumbles he may win a second term.

I think in a way, OW really depends on DT being successful. If he fails there will be a big feeling against celebrities and a desire for the return of 'real' politicians.

If he succeeds however the Dems might decide to fight fire with fire by putting OW out there.

I would think the Dems may have concerns about the skeletons in her closet. But as DT shows they can be overcome.

BarbarianMum · 09/01/2018 09:20

The majority of the American population voting for a black woman? One day maybe, sadly not yet.

insadtimes · 09/01/2018 09:36

Isn't that what we need in politics now though; more ordinary people

Yes we need more people from all walks of life in politics. But they should start near the bottom, get some real experience and and prove themselves as politicians not be catapulted into the top job! Have you learnt nothing from the mistake that is Trump?!

Goldenhandshake · 09/01/2018 09:40

I'd much prefer Michelle Obama. I think she would walk it, and more importantly, do a good job of it.
