To think Oprah being the potus would be amazing

Female, black and lesbian would restore my faith in the world. Trump's supporters would hate that and she seems far more suited than him. She would walk it right?

Quite a few people have been elected president who started out with little name recognition, most recently Barack Obama. The key to name recognition is being able to attract money.

HipNewName · 11/01/2018 01:19

@SenecaFalls is right. The ability to attack big money early on is very important. But there is a lot more to that than how much of a household name some one is.

@vwlphb You really don't understand the Clintons. She is the smarter, tougher, more ambitious one. If she'd been born another 10 or 20 years later, the first woman POTUS of the US would have been Hillary Rodham. If she had married someone else, he would have ended up President. If Bill had married someone else, I don't think he would have made it to the white house.

She's Hermione Granger, and Bill Clinton is Ron Weasley. Your point of view is like saying that Hermione is only important because she ends up with Ron.

Hillary is an example of a woman who put her career second for her man's . She took a beating for not being a traditional first lady and expressing political views. She's not my favorite person because I see her as ethically challenged, but much of the vitriol that has been heaped on her is just sexism because she is a strong, intelligent woman who dared to reach for power.

HipNewName · 11/01/2018 01:20

attract big money, not attack it.

Want2bSupermum · 11/01/2018 04:13

hip I wholly disagree with your assessment. Hilary Clinton lost the election because she put her career ambitions before her integrity. There is so much filth associated with her. I couldn't bring myself to vote for her after the way she attacked women assulted by her DH. I voted for Jill Stein myself. Many other women voted for Trump after the democrats tried to paint him out as someone who goes around assulting women. Given Bills history you could sense the eyeroll and voters switching off. Had it been 'Anyone else' vs Trump then we wouldn't have the President we have now. She was a deeply flawed candidate and the fact the democrats failed to easily secure a win against Moore is evidence that right now the dems couldn't couldn't score in a whore house with a fist full of $100 bills.

HipNewName · 11/01/2018 05:27

I would never defend Hillary's ethics. I was pointing out that she's no shrinking violent that only managed the limelight due to who she married.

Have you ever been to Alabama? Do you know any people who refer to the Civil War as the "War of Northern Aggression"? It is good ol' boy state, and hasn't voted for dem presidential candidate since 1972 (Carter, who is a Southerner). Jones is the first dem senator there since 1992, and that guy later became a republican!

This senate race was for Jeff Session's seat and Moore was heavily backed by Trump, yet the dems still won.

this link has a humorous take on the results of that Senate Race

Alabama has one of the worst histories in the nation for voter discrimination in the US. In the 50's and 60's people died there for voting and other civil rights. Fast forward -- a few years ago they passed a law for stricter ID when voting and then closed 31 DMV offices making it far more difficult for people to get the new ID. Every single county where blacks make up more than 75% of the votes lost its DMV office. Gosh, I wonder why the good ol' boys that run the state would do a thing like that.

I'm sicken about the state of democracy in the United States. But your analysis that "dems couldn't couldn't score in a whore house with a fist full of $100 bills." misses the mark.

bridgetoc · 11/01/2018 06:56

No that is an awful idea. Dreadful woman......

Roussette · 11/01/2018 07:01

Many other women voted for Trump after the democrats tried to paint him out as someone who goes around assulting women

Tried? They didn't have to try very hard. He has in the past and his behaviour is evident in the way he talks about women even now.

Notreallyarsed · 11/01/2018 07:24

I said at the time that Hillary’s arrogance and refusal to step down to allow a better (and better liked) democrat stand is a big part of why this happened.

QueenOfIce · 11/01/2018 07:27

I don't think she wrote that speech by herself and being branded inspirational because she made a speech at a glitzy night out the same event that honoured Kirk Douglas doesn't necessarily make her presidential material!

All the photos of Oprah cosied up to Harvey Weinstein and she honestly had no clue what sort of a person he is? Please.

BertrandRussell · 11/01/2018 07:43

The internalised misogyny around Clinton is breathtaking.

woman11017 · 11/01/2018 07:48

Noticed a lot of men/trolls/ extreme right wingers aren't happy with it.
Grin

She's an eminent journalist, has built up a fortune worth £2b, is an extremely thoughtful and well connected person.

Oprah has been crafting her excellent speeches for 5 decades on her original TV show and her Oprah channel.

She's not gay, but does that matter?

She is a campaigner for women's and civil rights.

She has a massive fan base crossing the racial and class divide, although perhaps the demographic is a bit old; it's exactly the one that Trump went after, but female.

Like Barack, but she's lived it.

What could trumpkins possibly fear?

makeourfuture · 11/01/2018 08:01

She was a deeply flawed candidate

Because she 'put her career before her integrity'? Are all candidates held to this standard? To the same degree?

If it had been an election where people rationally judged on integrity, would Trump have been allowed in the parking lot?

HipNewName · 11/01/2018 08:07

I don't think she wrote that speech by herself

Why? She is very moving and motivational public speaker, which is how she made it big. She got where she is in life with her own words.

Why don't you think she wrote the speech?

Fekko · 11/01/2018 08:27

I would imagine she had writers on her tv show. She was a journalist though wasn’t she? So I assume she is good with words (but that didn’t necessary mean speeches I suppose).

BertrandRussell · 11/01/2018 08:36

"Why don't you think she wrote the speech?"

Because she will have a team of writers. Like every other A list celebrity.

woman11017 · 11/01/2018 08:47

It really is worth watching and reading a bit more about Oprah before you dismiss her.

Although underestimating her intelligence and ability could be extremely useful for her and her supporters.

woman11017 · 11/01/2018 09:25

Oprah Winfrey would comfortably beat Donald Trump in a Presidential election, a poll has suggested

The TV personality would have a 10-point lead over the Republican if a vote were held today, a Rasmussen Reports survey found

BertrandRussell · 11/01/2018 09:31

I don’t dismiss Oprah- I think she could well win if she stands.

My concern is whether a science denier with no political experience is a good choice for President.

CrazyExIngenue · 11/01/2018 09:40

Are those the same polls that predicted that Clinton would beat Trump in a landslide woman?

woman11017 · 11/01/2018 09:46

BertrandRussell where is the 'science denier' ref? She did speak out against eating meat during the 'mad cow disease' epidemic and was challenged in court by some who may have also had a racial and gendered agenda?

Oprah triumphs over the Texas cattle ranchers

Not a poll expert, so can't tell you CrazyExIngenue

In an ideal world, a jobbing democrat would be successfully leading an opposition to trump.

It's not really an ideal world at the moment though.

@woman11017

Scroll down to the bit about Jenny McCarthy,

woman11017 · 11/01/2018 10:02

Thank you Notreallyarsed I see, she's had criticism for hosting Dr Oz and 'Dr Phil' who's not a real doctor on her show, and she's had anti vaccine advocate Jenny Mc Carthy on. Fair enough, don't quite see how that makes her 'anti science', especially compared to the current 45th!

BertrandRussell · 11/01/2018 10:02

She is an active supporter of Jenny McCarthy and Dr Oz, to name but two.

BertrandRussell · 11/01/2018 10:04

"Fair enough, don't quite see how that makes her 'anti science', especially compared to the current 45th!"
Not comparing her to anyone. Supporting those people makes her anti science.

woman11017 · 11/01/2018 10:04

I've watched her show with Dr Oz, he's pretty annoying, but I can't see how that makes her anti science.
Vaccines are a bit controversial in some quarters, isn't it OK to discuss them?
