To think Oprah being the potus would be amazing

Female, black and lesbian would restore my faith in the world. Trump's supporters would hate that and she seems far more suited than him. She would walk it right?

She's popular.

Popularity doesn't indicate brains, critical thinking or a champion of STEM industries.

She knows how to appeal to the public and would do an amazing job of running for election.

But running on popularity alone? Mr Blobby was popular once. Confused

Discussing vaccines is one thing.

Giving a platform to discredited vaccine 'research' and its ex-Playboy model/woo 'science' champion is quite another.

Vaccines don't contain mercury any more and there is no link to autism and the MMR vaccine.

woman11017 · 11/01/2018 10:10

Well she's certainly scaring the trumpkins. We shall see how far this goes.
If nothing else she's a focal point for democratic re grouping, which could be even more worrying for the GOP.

Notreallyarsed · 11/01/2018 10:13

@woman11017 using her power to discredit much needed vaccines despite scientific proof they are beneficial and peddling the scientifically discredited notion that vaccines cause autism is not only dangerous and irresponsible, it’s also very anti science.

And don’t get me started on Jenny McCarthy, the woman disgusts me.

Notreallyarsed · 11/01/2018 10:15

She didn’t discuss them, she gave a one sided platform to a woman who hasn’t a fucking clue what she’s talking about and claims she “cured” her son's autism which was caused by vaccines. Ludicrous is putting it mildly.

Gingernaut · 11/01/2018 10:17

She's black and popular. That's enough for the Trump-ettes, whether she gets into politics or not.

But yes, a high profile, BME cheerleader for the right Democratic (or Republican Wink) candidate would attract a lot of voters.

Enough to cause real headaches amongst the Republicans for this year's mid-term elections.

With a swing to the Democrats, the House of Representatives could effectively stop a lot of legislation plans in their tracks.

Not American but I'm grabbing popcorn for November 6th. Or 6th November....

Johnathan Pie

woman11017 · 11/01/2018 18:09

Men don't like her very much I've noticed.

woman11017 · 11/01/2018 18:14

It"s fine too that she's getting this reaction, she knew she would, we shall see.

HipNewName · 11/01/2018 23:11

I would imagine she had writers on her tv show.

On her show, she interviewed, facilitated conversation, and spoke from her heart. I'm not saying she didn't have writers (I don't know) but the show wasn't scripted per se.

I think that the comments that she didn't write the speech are meant to discredit her and put her down. It isn't a comment that I usually see toward either celebrities or politicians, even though many use writers. I think the comments may be based in either racism or sexism or a combination. As if to say, "well, there's no way that a black woman could have something to say or articulate her views, so she was just reading someone else's words. It doesn't count."

I thought the Jonathon Pie video was spot on.

Yes, but it is barely necessary. In spite of having majorities in both the Senate and The House and having the White House, the republicans are completely dysfunctional and can barely get anything done. If there were any Republican other than Trump in the White House, far more of the Republican platform would have been codified into law at this point. I'm a moderate, so I'm glad their platform isn't becoming more entrenched. Watching the mess in Washington should be a case study for both parties to not let someone without governing experience get this far.

A senator who has been on some of the heavy hitting committees is best. Elizabeth Warren comes to mind. She's on the following senate committees:

  • Committee on Armed Services Subcommittee on Airland Subcommittee on Personnel Subcommittee on Strategic Forces
  • Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs
Subcommittee on Economic Policy Subcommittee on Financial Institutions and Consumer Protection (ranking member) Subcommittee on Securities, Insurance, and Investment
  • Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions
Subcommittee on Primary Health and Retirement Security
  • Special Committee on Aging

This is the sort of CV that would make someone a solid president. Not a speech at an award ceremony. I like Oprah, her science issues aside, I like her. She nice. She genuinely cares about people. But she isn't qualified to be the president. If she wants to be, I think she would run for Senate and spend 10-20 years there, and then consider it.

MakeItStopNeville · 12/01/2018 00:26

It's also worth pointing out that I don't know any American Democrats who want her to run. None at all. The general consensus is nope.

Bernie Sanders IS too old. He'll be almost 80 in 2020. As is Joe Biden (who I don't think wants to run anyway). And they know that, particularly Bernie. He went for it because it was the only time he could.

I have a lot of time for my own Senators, Chuck Schumer, who uses Twitter almost as often as Don does, but to more effect; and Kirsten Gillibrand. Unfortunately, they're probably a bit too New York for the rest of the country.

I'm quite excited about Amy McGrath...

My vote would be for Ron Paul in 2020

ColonelJackONeil · 12/01/2018 08:14

RuPaul would be a fabulous alternative to Ron Paul

HipNewName · 12/01/2018 09:09

Ron Paul in 2020

He's 82.

Do you mean his son, Rand Paul? Their names are similar. Rand is a senator (from Kentucky) and a Republican. Very conservative, tea party type. He threw his hat in the ring in the last presidential election but was out pretty early.

Ieatcake · 12/01/2018 10:50

If oprah is running won't she have to declare soon as campaigning must be starting in a couple of months?

They could deal with one Black president, which resulted in Trump. What makes you think Amerikkka would vote for another in its current state

HipNewName · 13/01/2018 19:48

80s Queen, I agree with you. Trump ran on racism, and the situation with race relations is the worst that it's been my entire life. I agree it's a backlash to having our first black president. The US is becoming more and more extreme -- the sides are getting further and further apart.

However, there are lots of normal, day to day interactions between people of different races, and those don't make the news. The area I live in is mostly Latino, my best friend is African American. Most places I go have people of all backgrounds just doing their thing. The violence that shows on the media is the exception, not the norm. It is WAY too common, but it is not the norm.
