To be angry that my parents are letting dd3 down?

My dd is in the Young Voices concert in Birmingham this week. I can't go to watch her because I have to work. My parents agreed to go and see her. Tickets already paid for months ago... my daughter has no contact with her father so there is nobody else who could go instead.

About an hour ago my mum suddenly announced out of the blue that she and my dad are not going because she is worried they will catch flu. Apparently there is a flu epidemic now in the midlands(?) Both she and my dad have had the flu vaccination but she says it doesn't work and I should just not go to work so I can go instead.

I'm so upset for my dd. She will be really sad if there is nobody there to support her. I can't see a solution Sad

I can't lie to my daughter about it - it just seems wrong. If I had known about this weeks ago I could have asked my uncle to go - I'm sure he would have and he could have taken dd2.

He lives in Swansea so it may be too late for that now.

Picking up from the venue would be an absolute nightmare for schools to manage.

WitchesHatRim · 09/01/2018 08:07

I am in the midlands and I am aware of a handful of people with both mild and servere flu symptoms

I'm in the Midlands and I know personally of a few people who have been/are seriously ill. Including my DM who is currently in hospital

@Voiceforreason - the fact that you are moving around in a supermarket among many, many people who could have the virus - as opposed to sitting static in a theatre and therefore exposed to far fewer people - is why going to the supermarket is a lot more risky!

Dungeondragon15 · 09/01/2018 13:15

Dungeon yes they do - they strongly recommend you let school take them and pick them up.

They have changed their policies since my dd did it then. I'm quite surprised as it means that fewer parents will go and they will sell less tickets and therefore less money. I have heard that they don't invite schools back if parents don't buy tickets.

Picking up from the venue would be an absolute nightmare for schools to manage.

It was quite time consuming and I bet stressful for teachers but it saved the school paying for the coach.

Pfffffft, what a carry on! Glad about that for your daughter's sake.

KERALA1 · 10/01/2018 21:37

Ha! It was fab bet they were glad they did.

Lizzie48 · 10/01/2018 22:22

I bet they're glad they did go and watch their DGD's performance. I expect they were just worrying and concluded that they're not immune to the threat of flu wherever they are.

OP I was at the concert tonight, it was fantastic. Great news they decided to go - though I couldn't pick out DD without binoculars and she couldn't see us, and the atmosphere was so wonderful I'm sure your DD would have loved it anyway. And I'm pleased to report there was no coughing or sneezing near us so hopefully the flu will be avoided too!! Hope your DD had an amazing time.

lottieandmia22 · 10/01/2018 23:35

Haha, they had a brilliant time and are so glad they went Smile so all is well that ends well. I promised to take care of them if either of them did catch flu.

How come they decided to go? Did you show them this thread?!

lottieandmia22 · 11/01/2018 10:34

No I didn't show them the thread. I accepted they had decided not to go but I'm so very glad they changed their minds!
