AIBU?

Not a TAAT as such - more about moderation in general.

Is it just me or are MN much quicker to delete threads these days?

There have been a few examples recently where the thread had taken an odd turn - but which could have been solved by deletions or posdibly even a stern but the whole thread has been pulled, despite the thread containing useful advice.

Is this a new policy? Or are there a couple of new mods who are more likely to pull threads?

AIBU to think this is happening and it's a shame if so?

@Dippingmytoesin
Mumof56 clearly dislikes MNtrolls - she could quite easily post her dislike for it there but brings it over here

The irony.

None of us are real. Mumof56 isn't Mumof56, Dipinmytoesin isn't Dippinmytoesin and I'm not paxillin. We are all just people having fun dicking about on the internet, that's all.

then often the best thing to do is get rid of it- otherwise it will continue to cause upset and in our experience, often takes a turn for the worse and ends up being deleted anyway.

And that, I suspect it the problem. MNHQ are now the proud owners of a crystal ball and pull posts before they take a turn for the worst.

That and the decision to pull posts about certain topics because one cohort is to be defended more than another - I mean things like travellers being so protected that businesses that have been directly affected cannot be mentioned, as recently happened locally. The post was pulled... because it was going to be racist

No matter that it meant, effectively, that MN was defending criminals because some poster pulled the race card! It is a ludicrous situation to get caught up in!

Speak for yourself pax. My RL name is Ms Battle Ax and I never have fun. On principle. The internet is serious.

"if that doesn't suit you then you can either argue the case with MNHQ on the basis that your way would be better"

RedDogs, that's what I'm doing isn't it.

I didn't say I didn't agree with ANY form of moderation by the way. Just that there should be a good reason, more than just someone claiming it makes them upset.

"The owners of the forum disagree with you, they have decided on the overall tone they want their forum to take, they have lines they don't allow to be crossed, that's their call."

They've decided to delete whole threads rather than just certain posts though. I believe that's more to do with resources than a principled decision. There's no need for a whole thread to be deleted because people complained about certain posts and I actually like Swiss cheese.

Yes paxillin that's what it should be - fun. I don't think there is much fun to be had by being on the receiving end of a sustained tongue lashing because you used the wrong form of words, or did or said something daft, nor do I think much of the people who find their fun in tearing strips of someone else. I don't agree with the well, they deserved it justification either.

We need to be more... edgy?

Yes plainly. We could invent elaborate lives or just snark at every poster for the sake of it? Some would call that trolling of course although both seem just fine here.

Have you given the Reddit a gander gwen? It is a tiny glimpse of what MN would be totally unmoderated.

Anyway curious has inspired me to watch Minority Report. So I'm going to do that for some sanity Smile

What is nice for the reddit enthusiasts of course is that they can say anything they like about Mumsnet and its users without fear of having their arguments countered cos they know anything like that on here will be pulled at the first sign of trouble. It's probably a good thing from their pov that Mumsnet seem to be quicker to delete everything lately.

People can and do go over there to take issue though. So that's not quite true.

You do realise its an open group not a private one?

Open groups on reddit allow anyone to join and post. You don't have to be approved or apply you simply join and post your views.

Gwenhwyfar I've been on threads in the past where MNHQ pulled a huge number of posts, the problem was it then descended into a cacophony of posters asking "What did x posters say that got them deleted/why was x posters comment deleted when y posters comments are allowed to stand, etc." Then it trails off into a tirade of MNHQ obviously have favourite posters, the OP's question/request is totally ignored whilst posters fight it out amongst themselves, the thread has more yet more deletions, ends up impossible to follow and is irrelevant to original subject matter.

Pulling of a post for privacy can be necessary. Or it certainly was for me.
I had a post in the Daily Fail and someone from DH’s work knew it was me as DH had told her about the incident. Instead of just shutting up she decided to go round the office telling everyone about it, and she is also in the PTA at my kids school.
My previous threads had included details of mine and my children’s health, and how my DH was wondering if to leave his work for a new company etc. The woman is a total nosey pain in the arse so I asked mumsnet HQ for help to delete the health ones and work ones so she couldn’t go looking through what I’ve previously posted about. Still angry with her.
The threads didn’t have anything bad in them but it was private stuff that I wouldn’t want the likes of her looking through.

Of course I know that it's an open forum!

I don't want to thread derail though, I'm sure it's rather annoying for the op who makes a valid point.
