To think MMHQ are more trigger happy these days?

Not a TAAT as such - more about moderation in general.

Is it just me or are MN much quicker to delete threads these days?

There have been a few examples recently where the thread had taken an odd turn - but which could have been solved by deletions or posdibly even a stern but the whole thread has been pulled, despite the thread containing useful advice.

Is this a new policy? Or are there a couple of new mods who are more likely to pull threads?

AIBU to think this is happening and it's a shame if so?

OP posts:
gingergenius · 06/01/2018 12:14

I had a post deleted the other day and was shown the talk guidelines and cannot for the life of me understand what talk guidelines i had broken - very odd!

SilverySurfer · 06/01/2018 12:14

I have zero problem with them pulling troll or PBP threads but I think MNHQ are wrong to pull threads because the OP has flounced off because they have not got the replies they wanted. To add insult to injury MN then put something like 'removed because it gave too much RL info or was outing' when there was zero RL info - just an OP who flounced.

ClashCityRocker · 06/01/2018 12:17

In a sense, I can see why MNHQ might pull a thread if the poster was in a vulnerable place or had genuine concerns about being outed... Or the thread hitting the gutter press.

Leaving aside trolls and goady fuckers, it's probably easier to just delete if the op requests than try to ascertain whether there is a genuine reason for deletion or not.

God forbid a poster suffered severe real life consequences from a mumsnet post which they had requested was deleted and MNHQ had refused to do so.....which then leaves the original issue of posters getting threads deleted because it isn't going their way.

I wonder if redacting the ops posts would be a good compromise, so good advice will still stand.

Lovesagin · 06/01/2018 12:22

I've noticed threads discussed on Reddit are deleted much quicker

londonista · 06/01/2018 12:23

This one from a month ago, I really don't know why it got deleted. In the original post, the OP said she didn't want to sit trapped in front room while plasterers work "a bit like Ann Frank". She was immediately jumped on for what was frankly a very poor choice of words. She apologised numerous times, and people piled in needlessly - she never once failed to apologised. I don't know why MN couldn't have just agreed to the request by the OP to edit that out of the original post! She said she'd asked them several times if they could just remove those 3 poorly chosen words but for some reason they wouldn't and then the thread was pulled.

Also probably don’t want a repeat of the Surrey one which started people going elsewhere

Coconutspongexo · 06/01/2018 12:30

Remind me of Donald Trump and his big button 🙄

Coconutspongexo · 06/01/2018 12:32

People on here are also really confused about what will ‘out’ them half the shite people think it outing isn’t.

Agreed. There was a parking one recently where nearly everybody said the OP was parking selfishly and had deserved the note she got. She claimed somebody had recognised her from her diagram and had the thread deleted Hmm

Mumof56 · 06/01/2018 12:35

@Dippingmytoesin

why do you post MN responses to your reports on other sites?

OnionKnight · 06/01/2018 12:35

Agreed.

I've never known so many hobbies or occupations etc to be 'outing'.

Coconutspongexo · 06/01/2018 12:36

Because I can mumof56? Do you have an issue with me reporting you? Because if you do I honestly don’t care

You can report whatever you feel the need to. To starting posting the responses to your reports on on other site just seems a bit...odd.

I think you’re a bit odd the way you try and goad people on the internet.
I think it’s odd you clearly read that site when you have an issue with it.

Each to their own

paxillin · 06/01/2018 12:40

I had a party thread deleted as a TAAT. It wasn't. I do bear grudges, I'm dead mature Grin.

StopTheRoundabout · 06/01/2018 12:40

I asked to have my profile deleted after the Jeremy attack published identifying details and they ignored it. I had to set up another account. Agree with latest. It depends on who's asking. As for over reporting MNHQ always say report instead of troll hunting. TBF there has been an influx of trolls but MN must be benefiting profit wise from tabloids lifting threads. If they weren't, there is no way they would be happy to let it happen. Afterall , they are a Company and it is free advertising without much effort on MN's part but they do profit from it. I doubt they're bothered too much about the impact it has on the lives of the real ops when the proverbial hits the fan. It is just collateral damage.

CoteDAzur · 06/01/2018 12:40

"why do you post MN responses to your reports on other sites?"

What business is it of yours what people post on other sites? Hmm

Gwenhwyfar · 06/01/2018 12:41

Yes, they are quick to delete threads. I have a thread about this same issue under the appropriate topic.
I think it's a bit similar to the current trend for non-platforming. Some people will try to ban any opinions they don't like rather than engaging in the discussion.

It's not me running around other sites posting about posters.

I can read what ever I like.

Coconutspongexo · 06/01/2018 12:42

I can read what ever I like

And I can post whatever I like :)

Roomba · 06/01/2018 12:42

It does annoy me that when posters don't get an overwhelmingly positive response, they can ask for the thread to be deleted. This used to be very rare on MN but seems to happen several times a day now. I'm sick of going back to threads for updates and finding them gone. There also seems to be a lot more trolls around these days. I've been on MN since about 2006 and have really noticed a difference lately.

LaurieMarlow · 06/01/2018 12:43

Totally agree with this. It's happened 2/3 times over the last few days. Really irritating.

WhatALoadOfOldBollocks · 06/01/2018 12:43

The frequent thread deletions are really putting me off MN. I don't know about others, but I doubt I'm alone, but I can see I'll get to the stage where I don't bother posting at all because why go to the effort when the thread could end up deleted. Moderation is great but I think they're going the wrong way. If posters have latched onto something "offensive" that an OP has said, and go on and on about it even when the OP has explained or apologised numerous times, MNHQ could simple post a warning that any further posts on that topic will be deleted. Not pull the whole sodding thread.

And the more trigger warnings and MNHQ editing there is, the more I think "Oh FFS snowflakes, grow a thicker skin or fuck off to NetHuns where you'll be surrounded by nice stuff that doesn't risk offending you". Honestly, a poster was "triggered" by an OP mentioning firebombs FFS. Diddums is not robust enough for the internet I think.

What people write on another platform is neither here nor there. Nobody has an exclusivity agreement with mumsnet. It is sometimes good to remember we are all nobody on the internet.
