AIBU to feel hurt by this?

My DH and our two DDs are Muslim. I'm not I'm white British but DH and I have always bought our girls up to accept and respect both our cultures so they can fit in with both. We live in a mainly white area with very few ethnic minority people so my girls have white friends. I have just seen on the dreaded Facebook a post from a friend of mine who's DD is also a friend of my DD asking why Muslims are allowed in this country, along the lines of "they hate dogs, pork and Jesus so they should get out" type of thing. Lots of people have liked and agreed with this that I know.

My friend and I have always been open about my family's faith and she has always claimed to be open minded about it and shown interest. I now feel that she's not being honest and probably judges us. I haven't commented on her post but I'm not sure how to proceed because right now I feel hurt, does she think my family should "get out too"?

Not sure what your point is woof
I could list you many many examples of white men disrespecting women and generally behaving like arseholes to Confused

kaytee87 · 02/01/2018 21:33

It's a sect of Islam. There's no real reason you'd know anything about it unless your dh followed it.

@Justanotherlurker you realise a lot of people don't follow their religion to a tee don't you?

Snowdrop18 · 02/01/2018 21:40

I have reported the troll hunting but no one is around

I have never ever gone anywhere near a loved one's religious stuff, DP or parents or whoever. There is no way I could answer even the most basic question.

OK its a sect. DH is not from that sect, I'm not sure what relevance it has to this thread. I don't think people have been backslapping, just stating their opinions, more than most here have been helpful and encouraging that not everyone thinks like my friend. I've been feeling down about this so its helped.

I'm not sure where you're hostility is coming from?

There have been a number of instances of Muslim groups being the ones to protest perceived blasphemy against Jesus, where most Christian groups didn't.

Source?

Have a look at this article I am old enough to remember it at the time and my memory is that most of the complaints after the broadcast were from Muslims.

I'm not religious in any way and I know about 5% about most religions. But... I respect other's choices and don't try and trip them up... that's just weird.

Tistheseason17 · 02/01/2018 21:50

Take the positives OP they outweigh the goady beggars! Smile

WoofWoofMooWoof · 02/01/2018 21:52

Sorry, didn't mean any goady fuckery. I don't know what I was trying to get at lol, been one of those days, and the neighbours have been driving me nuts, stomping and bashing and emptying their ashtrays into my garden. Sorry all Blush.

Whiterabbitears · 02/01/2018 21:53

yippyyappy · 02/01/2018 21:55

@frumpety to be fair NOBODY could prefer oasis over Blur. And if that kind of person did exist im afraid I would delete and ghost them Wink.

cardibach · 02/01/2018 21:57

As an aside, are the people who say hey aren’t racist because Muslim is not a race the same people who, when talking about Brexit, say ‘we’re not leaving Europe you know, just the EU’? It just seems the same sort of nit picking to hide prejudice and a narrow view of the world.
OP use one of the excellent light comments suggested above, then report and block. (You report by clicking the little arrow top right hand corner of a post and following the feedback route. If you want to report a comment on a post, press and hold the comment and the option will come up).

I have the horrible feeling sometimes that Britain is far more Xenophobic than I had thought. I had gone through life thankful that I’d only really come across a few prejudice people who made it clear what their views about ‘my lot’ are like. But they really were a minority. Since Brexit though there seems to be so many people suddenly feeling it’s actually ok now to say what they’ve been thinking all along. I feel a naieve fool thinking my family was accepted here. And this dude freedom of speech has made me determined to stand up when I hear prejudice towards any race or religion. It’s vile, there’s no excuse and when I’ve watched reports about refugees from Syria, Iran, Ethiopia and elsewhere finding border after border blocking them from other countries I could weep.

Loadedllama · 02/01/2018 21:59

This new freedom of speech not dude!

Snowdrop18 · 02/01/2018 22:00

OMD cardi, just let the OP talk about what she wants to talk about

honestly, between the GF, the "I apologise because I've been called on my GFery" and now a Brexit derail, this is ridiculous.

OP. Hello again. Back on topic. I hope you do get some value from venting on here and yes, it is depressing when people you thought were just regular people turn out to be bizarrely prejudiced.d

I do wonder if it's worth having a chat with this person as sometimes people do stop, have a think and realise that their prejudice has no basis. Once in a blue moon but I suppose you never know.

Whiterabbitears · 02/01/2018 22:04

I remember when I met DH in the 90s it was very uncool amongst my peers to be racist, I felt we were more accepted then. I know that it may have been different for lots of people at that time but I have felt a difference in attitudes in more recent times, things do seem more openly hostile.

OP posts:
PositivelyPERF · 02/01/2018 22:05

dude freedom of speech I know I shouldn't laugh, but I'm now picturing a bunch of hippies putting the world to rights. 😄

I support dude freedom of speech!

tehmina23 · 02/01/2018 22:06

I've known lots of Muslims, never heard the term 'ahmadiyya'...

This fb friend sounds like an intolerant bigot. Islamophobic, racist or whatever she does not sound like a nice person; it's always upsetting when someone turns out to be not the person you thought they were.

I've been unfriended by certain work colleagues as I make it clear on fb that I'm an anti fascist, feminist, who dislikes prejudice.

When people share Britain first or edl shit I always say, do you realise they are Nazis?
Sometimes people apologise- but sometimes they are showing you what they really are.

Loadedllama · 02/01/2018 22:07

PositivelyPERF Dudes should definitely have freedom of speech. As long as they aren’t racist Dudes :)
