To hate the dog

We have a 10 week old puppy . I am 8 weeks pregnant with the most horrendous morning day and night sickness and my sense of smell through the roof.
The dog is NOT house trained and seems to be going backwards rather than improving. He is shitting and pissing EVERYWHERE. Pooing in his own bed. Eating his own poo. Vomiting his poo up. Weeing in his own bed. His bed is washed multiple times a day, new beds have been bought.
I can't cope . I am crying everyday with it all it's disgusting. I dread waking up in the morning feeling sick, being sick and then cleaning up all the piss and shit he's left all over the kitchen floor . I can't stand him being near me . I'm at a complete loss st what to do but I'm absolutely miserable and hate living in my house with him. Please help Sad

A 10 week old puppy will not be house trained.Training it is your job to do.You should have been more responsible and looked into what you were letting yourself in for BEFORE buying a pup.I hope you realise a baby can be very mucky and won't come ready toilet trained either.

TemptressofWaikiki · 02/01/2018 11:56

Poor, poor puppy! Why do people like you get a dog?!

DeStijl · 02/01/2018 11:57

Why did you get a dog?

HisBetterHalf · 02/01/2018 11:57

You should return her to the breeder. No puppy will be fully housetrained at 10 weeks old. They learn through you teaching them and letting them out when they need to go. Reward based training is good and the consistent use of a word that pup will begin to associate with. Was the pup a spur of the moment decision and have you had dogs before?

Ashamedandblamed · 02/01/2018 11:59

Give the puppy back to the breeder. It's a shame you cannot do that with the baby. Did you also know baby's are not house trained ?

You have to clean up their piss and pop too.

Bostin · 02/01/2018 12:00

I could barely cope with our puppy and a two year old. It was such hard work, unrelenting and I wouldn’t have got him if I’d realised how it would be. However we persevered with the training and now 5 years later we have the perfect dog.
It is going to be hard work. Perhaps if you are not in the right place for it it would be better to give up now as an older puppy with behavioural problems will not have very good outcomes.

Did you want a dog in the first place, OP? Or was the decision to get a puppy driven by your partner, who is also conveniently out at work and therefore not dealing with the mess?

It does sound very much as though you should rehome the puppy and leave getting another one till much later, if ever (maybe, if you have a partner who wants a dog, consider getting an adult dog from a rescue, as it will be housetrained already.)

This^^^
I read the word “hate” and felt horror. The poor dog.

RhiannonOHara · 02/01/2018 12:02

Kurri is talking sense. Do you know anything at all about dogs?

RoseWhiteTips · 02/01/2018 12:02

OnionKnight

Are you stupid? Of course a 10 week old puppy will not be house trained.

A very good question.

twattymctwatterson · 02/01/2018 12:04

You hate a puppy that you've had for a fortnight? I'll be sympathetic in that I had HG and it was truly horrific but the dog is a baby and you've made it part of your family. Did you even know anything about dogs before getting it?

RedHelenB · 02/01/2018 12:04

Having said that my pupoy went overnight (used puppy pad sometimes) from when we took him home.

HardAsSnails · 02/01/2018 12:04

And this is why dogs should not be given as Christmas presents.

fleshmarketclose · 02/01/2018 12:04

Why on earth get a puppy without researching first what life with a puppy would be like and being sure that you had room in your life to accommodate it? The puppy is just being a puppy, it needs to learn where to toilet and you need to be committed to training him. If you can't cope with him now how on earth do you think that you will manage an adolescent dog with a newborn or a young dog who hasn't had the time and attention it has needed with a toddler?
Contact the breeder and return the dog and don't think about getting another unless you have the time and commitment needed to give a dog the life they deserve.

cherrycola2004 · 02/01/2018 12:05

take the poor puppy back to the breeder

BiteyShark · 02/01/2018 12:05

Whose idea was it to get a puppy?

You can only have had it for 2 weeks and a lot of us have been there and it's bloody hard work toilet training a puppy but in order to stop it peeing and pooing everywhere you need to be consistently putting in the effort to train it.

BarbarianMum · 02/01/2018 12:05

Of course it's not house trained at 10 weeks old. Do you know how to house train your puppy? Do you understand how much work puppies are? And, if so, wtf would you choose now to get one?

ShatnersWig · 02/01/2018 12:06

God, what would you do if when you give birth you hate your child? And the smell of it pooing all the time. And it won't be house trained in 10 months, let alone 10 weeks. Don't worry, you can always have it adopted!

Of course the puppy isn't house trained at 10 weeks old! Didn't you check the label to see whether this particular variety came already trained?

But in seriousness, rehome the poor puppy to someone who knows what they're getting into and can give it the love and attention it needs, just like your child will when it comes into the world. Congratulations on your pregnancy.

uncoolnn · 02/01/2018 12:06

I don't normally say this as I'm a big believer in dogs being part of a family etc but it sounds like it would be best for the dog if you handed her back to the breeder you had her from. You cannot seriously expect a puppy to be housetrained by 8 weeks old ffs.

Glowerglass · 02/01/2018 12:06

This is not the right time for you to get a puppy. Take him back to the breeder.

whifflesqueak · 02/01/2018 12:07

I’m getting rid of a dog this week.

For various complicated reasons, I was always reluctant to get a dog but tried very hard to make it work for everyone’s sake. But I hated nearly everything about dog ownership (except the actual dog, he was nice). He’s going to live with mil who adores him.

I don’t feel guilty. We tried but it just doesn’t work. I don’t know anything about your situation, op, so i can’t judge. I hope you find him a good home.

trulybadlydeeply · 02/01/2018 12:07

He's behaving like a 10 week old puppy, and he sounds like quite a distressed one at that.

Can't your partner help with some of the clearing up?

What breed is he? Did the breeder give you any advice on training, particularly relating to the specific breed, or have you read up on what to do? Crates can be great - contain the puppy and his mess (and he may be less likely to mess in his crate) and also provide a safe space for him. Make it cosy, warm, and cover with a blanket to make it enclosed and dark (comforting and less stimulating).

You need to be taking him into the garden every hour, and have a set phrase to encourage him to wee or a poo, eg "hurry up". Loads of praise when he does go.

He will need lots of cuddles and reassurance, and also lots of sleep at his age. Take him to the vet to check for any underlying issues.

Puppies are extremely hard work, as I'm sure you realised before you got him. However with time, love, routine and training things will soon change.

Presumably the breeder will be willing to have him back rather than him live a miserable existence, but don't you want to persevere?

PastaOfMuppets · 02/01/2018 12:07

Goodness, I think you lot have made sure that OP feels like shit now

NoNoCharlieRascal · 02/01/2018 12:07

Take it back to the breeder. If they are a good breeder they would rather have the pup back so they can find it a more suitable home.
