We moved to Leeds 3 years ago and I've honestly never felt so lonely. I need to meet people and get out of the house.

I work nights so it's hard but I need to do this!

Sooo tell me your hobbies so I can have some ideas! Please and thank you!

Gym
Swimming
Aquarobics
Book club
Not a hobby but a few years ago I went on an introduction to counselling course and made lots of new friends
Local history club
Genealogy club
I also knit, crochet, sew and enjoy jigsaws but these are mainly solitary activities as no stitch and bitch groups near me
How about volunteering or charitable sessional work - both good for meeting people

Bambamber · 30/12/2017 22:52

Aerial hoop and aerial silks

FabalaTheGreenGirl · 30/12/2017 22:56

Join meetup! I did when I moved to York and it was alright - I met a few nice people and had some good nights out.

I make my own clothes, make jewellery, play guitar, knit, hula hoop (it's a really convenient exercise) and sometimes attempt to write things. Usually though I just moan about how I don't have the time to do any of these things.

bridgetreilly · 30/12/2017 23:01

I haven't looked back since I joined a weekly mixed media art class a couple of years ago. I've now also started a distance learning art degree as well. That's less good for meeting people, but I really love it.

Lellochip · 30/12/2017 23:01

If you're into (or want to get into) exercise at all, you could look into joining a Crossfit gym, instant community

TammySwansonTwo · 30/12/2017 23:02

Papercutting
Cake decorating
Knitting
Crochet
Embroidery
Book clubs
Singing

I love crafting but only started when I was 30. Until I had my twins I was selling my artwork as a business, and I wasn't at all an "arty person" - you can learn anything if you try!

ILoveMillhousesDad · 30/12/2017 23:03

Well at least people are naming their hobbies.

I can't stand reading posts 'i was doing my hobby' or 'dh spends all Saturday doing his hobby' like it's some big secret Grin

I don't have any btw. Watching telly and eating cheese. I have spent hours on 'my hobby' this Christmas Grin

foodiefil · 30/12/2017 23:04

Oh bless you @Christmastits

Hope you meet some friends.

I go to the gym and they have socials but other sociable things I've done have been Clandestine Cake Club, church, book club.

It's a friendly city! Good luck

meredintofpandiculation · 30/12/2017 23:09

You're ideally placed for potholing - the Dales are the caving centre of the UK.
Working nights is a problem for evening activities - when could you be available on a regular basis?
Try helping at your local community-run library, or join one of the volunteer groups looking after local parks.
Learn a language .
Karate
Creative writing
Multi-player role playing games.
Learn to play a musical instrument - something that opens itself to playing in a group of other learners.

BackforGood · 30/12/2017 23:12

What do you like doing though ?

Are you looking for something outdoors? indoors ? sporty / exercising? to learn a new skill? do you want to volunteer ? are you arty ? musical ? into gardening ? or reading ? do you want to specifically do something with others, or happy just to meet people through the hobby?

What time (of day, or of the week) do you want to give to this ?
If you work nights, do you sleep mornings or all day? Do nights start at teatime or after most of us go to bed (as in, could you do something one evening)? Do you have dc ? Do you want to do something with your partner, or just for you ?

Leeds2 · 30/12/2017 23:14

I would try volunteering. Food bank, charity shop, animal sanctuary - there are loads of opportunities out there.

homefromworklate · 30/12/2017 23:16

I moved to Leeds 2 years ago and feel super lonely too! More so when I partner is off out doing his own thing! I need a hobby too, my aim of 2018 is to get a hobby and meet new people 🤞

QueenCuntyFlippers · 30/12/2017 23:17

I run with a group (social) and play in a netball team. Not too busy, but it’s sessions per week on top of full time teaching and having 2 small DC. It’s enough

5foot5 · 30/12/2017 23:18

Anything musical appeal?
What about a choir? I read recently that choir membership in UK has hit an all time high of 2 million. That's a lot of potential new friends!

Christmastits · 30/12/2017 23:19

@homefromworklate yes! Same! Let me know if you find a good group!

I run a Brownies pack, it's lots of fun most of the time
I joined a local orchestra, we're all similarly crap, think school band standard except the orchestra at my school is better than we are
I have signed up to walk 1000 miles in 2018, there's a very nice group on Facebook, they seem to have friendly walks going on in most areas of the country.
I play ingress, which is like Pokémon Go, and made by the same people, just aimed at adults. The are a few players near me, and in a lot of places they do meet ups to help each other on missions, etc

What sort of thing do you enjoy?

blibblibs · 30/12/2017 23:23

I've just moved in between Leeds & Sheffield and finding a hobby and friends really needs to be my new years resolution.
I'm not sure eating, drinking and a bit of colouring in really serves as hobbies though.

Christmastits · 30/12/2017 23:27

@blibblibs but they're mine! 😂

Jellybean85 · 30/12/2017 23:29

I'm in Leeds currently and second the comment about Crossfit gym being an instant community. I'm also learning a language locally and met some fab people there,
What sort of things are you interested in?

homefromworklate · 30/12/2017 23:33

@christmastits will do, after watching a load of Kirsty's home made Christmas I'm thinking something crafty or baking. Unless there's a local cheese or cocktails appreciation society.

Where about's in Leeds are you ? North, south, east?

NargleFlargleZoobah · 30/12/2017 23:34

I joined a lot of groups and did some volunteering in 2017

Knitting/crocheting/sewing groups
Dog walking and taming feral kittens at a local rescue
Collections/fundraising for the rescue
Joined a supper club
Wildlife rehab course
Joined the [local town] in bloom volunteers
Lots of classes at the the community centre - yoga, veg*n cooking, painting, trapeze etc.
Horse riding lessons
Clandestine Cake Club

blibblibs · 30/12/2017 23:35

I've got three new colouring books I haven't started yet christmastits and a never ending supply of wine & cheese, maybe I should start my own group 😁

SukiStinks · 30/12/2017 23:36

There's a great open mic culture in Leeds, always somewhere to join in or spectate.

Also a well run skateboarding club for all ages, just outside the city centre.

I'm a big introvert so my hobbies may not get you meeting people, unless you sign up for classes or join a group. I love the following:-

  • fine Inkpen drawing
  • zentangling
  • quilting
  • dressmaking
  • making useful stuff out of crap
  • music (I used to play 3 to 4 nights a week and teach at weekends)
  • making photobooks
  • walking (get a dog, great way to make new friends)

Good luck Flowers

Christmastits · 30/12/2017 23:37

@homefromworklate I'm in Horsforth so north? I do see this class in January that looks exciting!
