Wow, this thread has opened my eyes to Lego which I had always assumed was a small box of bricks for children. Some of these are jaw dropping. Also had no idea that adults 'played' with Lego. I love doing jigsaws and I guess there's not much difference except the complexity of the Lego builds. Oh and jigsaws are a hell of a lot cheaper.

NotCornflakes I was intrigued by you saying And as others have pointed out, it's a wise investment so it's practically the same as putting the money into your pension.

Is there a healthy second hand market for some of these complex sets? And can I ask, please, what sort of percentage of their original price do they sell for and where would you sell them? Thanks

I think I may be buying myself a late Christmas present but which one to buy? Decisions decisions. Should I go for something a bit easier as I'm a Lego virgin?

Sorry OP to ask all these questions on your thread. In answer to your question - Yes - go for it Smile

makingmiracles · 22/12/2017 16:31

Do it! Why not!

My dp has his eye on the simpsons house (£180) And ds2 would like the Batman batcave

Love the nutcracker and train, do they still do those sets?

CiderwithBuda · 22/12/2017 16:36

These threads are so dangerous! I love Lego.

DH got me the Death Star a few years ago. I cried. It was a random moment made a few months previously and he remembered and got it. MIL was bemused! My friend thought I was joking when I out a photo on FB but all my male cousins and friends were jealous I loved building it. I was going through a bit of a crappy time and found building it very therapeutic.

I've since bought a few other sets. And have just remembered I have some of the Christmas ones to put out.

A few years ago we lived overseas and were moving out of our house and a family I knew vaguely came to look at the house. The husband worked for Lego. As the wife was looking around she spotted DS's Lego and we chatted and I said how much we both loved it. They wanted to come and see the house again but could only do the Sunday which was my birthday but I said no problem just pop over. They arrived with a fab set of a town for me and the space shuttle for DS. Neither were sets that were ever for sale just display. Loved them. Still have them.

SistersOfPercy · 22/12/2017 16:57

I really wanted the Millennium Falcon and the Kwik E Mart, but I'm not good with lego. Used to be a standing joke when I was a kid that my Mum could knock the ears off every Beswick horse she had. I inherited that trait...only with Lego. I singlehandedly demolished a hobbit hole in DD's room, killed several Ghostbusters and the Back To The Future Delorean is missing a wheel 😳
At least if I stick with big stuff I can't damage anything.

In other news, how to stop people messing with wrapped gifts in our house hehe

Dh is getting the technic tractor this year as I refuse to spend nearly 200 quid on the new truck model just because "it's got six huge wheels!"
Last year he got the excavator, that bought me 13 hours of silence and the tv remote Grin

NotCornflakes · 22/12/2017 17:03

@SilverySurfer Lego 'retire' sets after a couple of years or so and as soon as a set is no longer available directly from Lego its value on the second hand market goes up. I bought the Winter Village Market set new a few years ago for around £70, currently that set is on eBay with buy it now prices between £115 and £150. Serious Lego collectors (of which l am not one!) will buy multiples of high value sets and keep them unopened with the intention of selling them on. I build my sets because that's why I buy them but I do keep boxes for the more expensive sets, keep all instructions etc in case I do want to sell them on one day.
If you want to know more about it, there's a Lego forum called Eurobricks and there's probably a lot of chat on there about buying and selling, I don't really know all that much about it in terms of where you would look other than on eBay.
And as for which one to buy, just go for whatever you like the look of!

Katz · 22/12/2017 17:49

I wanted to put a big Lego set on my list but settled for the women of nasa. They can go with my female scientists set, Big Bang theory set and my VW campervan. I’d love the Disney castle but I’m not user where I’d put it once built

Katz · 22/12/2017 17:50

My dd also love Lego she’s 15 and has loads of the Star Wars sets but she started build her millennium falcon and hasn’t finished. I so want to just do it!

mogloveseggs · 22/12/2017 18:00

Go for it! I bought the tardis set with my overtime earlier in the year. Am hankering after Ninjago city now

SilverySurfer · 22/12/2017 18:01

Thanks for the info NotCornflakes interesting to learn that they don't resell at a percentage of their original price but actually increase in value once they go out of circulation. Does that apply to all apart from basic sets or do some become more valuable than others? I will definitely have a read of Eurobricks.

O M G Have just googled the Death Star mentioned by CiderwithBuda - it's nearly £500 and then Death Star 2 is £2,668! And if that's not enough the delivery charge on Amazon is £235! It doesn't even have all 5 star reviews. My mind is boggled. There's only one left in stock, don't all rush at once Grin

EllenRipley · 22/12/2017 18:03

They are both wonderful. So you should get them both, just in case the works ends next year.

Cubtrouble · 22/12/2017 18:04

I want the Disney Castle.

I cannot wait to help my son build his lego for Christmas (I promise I won’t take over LOL)

Do it OP you’re only here once

HanSolo · 22/12/2017 18:14

The Lego shop have the new ultra-detailed Millennium Falcon... it's £680 though Sad

CiderwithBuda · 22/12/2017 18:42

My DeathStar was around £300 I think. Yikes at current prices!

Floellabumbags · 22/12/2017 19:01

I'd get the carousel and the ferris wheel

Nikephorus · 22/12/2017 19:04

You’re all terrible influences!!!
We're terrible influences?! Your thread has cost me a further £164 on Lego today Grin Blush
No guesses what I'll be doing on my fortnight off though!

MistyMeena · 22/12/2017 19:17

Hmm I think we need an AFOL topic 😀

CaptainHammer · 22/12/2017 19:31

Yanbu. I have the Saturn V for Christmas and I can’t wait to build it!

Ofalltheginjoints · 22/12/2017 19:45

If the Lego makes you happy go for it! My DP has a serious Lego habit (regular exhibitions, a Lego room for his permanent city and turned it into a 2nd business as well) and until I met him I had no idea about AFOLs etc

It isn’t my thing but I have built a few sets including tower bridge and the Disney Castle, I must admit I do love the Castle it’s fab and so intricate with hidden features.

Enjoy your Lego OP!

trixymalixy · 22/12/2017 19:58

I'm getting the Christmas train and the nutcracker. I've bought DD the carousel but it's really for me!

aurorie11 · 22/12/2017 20:09

Couldn’t possibly comment, but no peeking in the -Lego store- loft

Pippin8 · 22/12/2017 20:11

I love this thread. My DS loved Lego as a child. I was sad when he thought he was too old for it aged 15 & got rid of it. He’s just turned 18 & started his first job a few months ago. He had his first bad day this week & went & bought a Lego Star Wars set to cheer himself up. I thought it was so sweet.

Anyway, you totally have to get that detectives office!

NotCornflakes · 22/12/2017 23:18

Look what fell into my basket at the supermarket earlier!

SilverySurfer, I think all sets increase in value a bit, but the big sets and themed sets go for the highest prices. Harry Potter Lego goes for silly money!

AIBU to spend my Christmas Bonus on Lego? :)
EllenRipley · 23/12/2017 00:05

I thought I'd written 'just in case the WORLD ends'. Not 'works'. Anyway, I'm now perusing the Lego site, for once not on behalf of my son and his Star Wars Lego obsession. Tesco Direct were doing 3 for 2 on Lego a while ago, not sure if it's still running.

monkeyfacegrace · 23/12/2017 00:12

I bought my 60 year old dad the Lonion Bridge and the Big Ben sets last year. Think I paid about £440 for both, but they are still worth approximately the same. This year I've bought him the Taj mahal and the Technic Tractor Clauss, again, both will hold their value. So it's not really spending money. It's saving. Ergo, sensible.
