Well done Computer, you can Google French quotes. Very clever. I can do a liiiittle bit more than that in French but well done for having a go.

LoveInTokyo · 20/12/2017 00:31

I was talking about the DUP, actually, but it could equally apply to a lot of leave voters.

LoveInTokyo · 20/12/2017 00:32

And that sounds like a Google Translate job, Computer.

OhThisbloodyComputer · 20/12/2017 00:33

@loveintokyo

How is your French social life going eh?

I'm guessing not too well, based on the evidence of your postings.

Lonely... ever so lonely....

LoveInTokyo · 20/12/2017 00:35

I'm currently on a completely different continent, in a hotel room by myself, if you must know. More bored than lonely.

OhThisbloodyComputer · 20/12/2017 00:38

@LoveInTokyo

Good for you.

Please, if I can ask you one thing, stop making awful psychological projections about other people

Julie8008 · 20/12/2017 00:38

And with that I am off to bed. Nice chatting, and I honesty mean no ill will to anyone.

LoveInTokyo · 20/12/2017 00:38

What psychological projections would those be?

LoveInTokyo · 20/12/2017 00:39

Sweet dreams, Julie. I mean you no ill will either.

@LoveInTokyo

LoveInTokyo · 20/12/2017 00:53

you like coalitions that no one votes for then yes they are fairer, if you like weak governments then yes they are fairer, if you like paralysis then yes they are fairer

• Technically more people have actually voted for the parties in government in a coalition.
• since WW2 Germany (initially FDR) has had a series of coalitions that have provided strong and stable governments.
• some forms of PR do lead to weak governments - many other forms absolutely do not.

I do not even know where to start on your description of the US system as binary. Which branch of government? As compared to our 'non binary' system?

You have previously expressed a support for democracy and yet support one of the least democratic forms of voting.

Brexit supporters are appalled and offended when people describe their arguments as ill educated and lacking in credibility. They claim they are being patronised. And then they put forward arguments that are based on prejudice against 'foreign' systems. Argue against any form of government that has any form of checks and balances because it is too complicated.
If you don't want to be treated like you are stupid stop saying stupid things.

Unless the UK was an anarchist commune, I doubt that's possible. The far right argument for leaving the EU is so that the UK can become an offshore tax haven, perhaps that's where you're coming from?

scaryteacher · 20/12/2017 07:40

To be fair Mousse, Belgium was without a government for over a year since I've been living here; the current Dutch coalition is hanging by one seat, and my Dutch friends said trying to decide how to vote was a nightmare in terms of what you wanted as opposed to what you'd end up with. It took 7 months to achieve the Dutch coalition and 548 days in 2010/11 to get a Belgian one. Who knows how long Mutti will be horsetrading before a coalition is formed in Germany?

FPTP may not be perfect, but you normally get a clear result. 2010 is the only time since I started voting that a GE result wasn't an outright victory for one of the two main parties in the UK.

Moussemoose · 20/12/2017 08:09

scaryteacher

Yes - as I said some forms of PR (of which there are many) do create weak governments but some don't. Also the weak government is often a feature of the political landscape rather than the system.

FPTP has allowed - on several occasions - the party that won the popular vote to loose the election and that goes against every democratic ideal! That is the democracy Brexit supporters are fighting for.

Coalition is not a bad thing. We teach our children that cooperation and team work are valuable skills. In the business environment the ability to work in teams and build consensus is highly valued but we want our country run by people who refuse to compromise. Then they do compromise - the skill that builds relationships and businesses - and we despise them.

lljkk · 20/12/2017 09:02

I quite like Coalition govt too, as long as public expectations are accordingly adjusted. Single winner takes all is inferior form of democracy.

Funny thing about the Trump presidency is it clarified to me how much the founding fathers designed a govt that could only act slowly & carefully in domestic matters. That was the point. To prevent sweeping actions and autocratic rule, to ensure cooperation across political spectrum and institutions. They deliberately created an inefficient process. Ruddy genius (sincere!).

Moussemoose · 20/12/2017 17:29

Indeed the US constitution like the EU is carefully crafted to ensure checks and balances this is one of the reasons I am so irritated when people claim the EU is over complex, confusing and undemocratic.

The US system was designed as a direct repudiation of the British system and like you say is being put to the test at the moment.

When people complain about the EU frequently their complaints amount to "it's different and I don't understand it" - and I'm afraid this is not really a valid constitutional argument.

JacquesHammer · 22/12/2017 13:30

Steady everyone: we have a (and I quote) "tangible benefit of Brexit".

Blue passports.

InfiniteSheldon · 22/12/2017 13:32

I know it's great news I am really happy to be getting it back I'll be changing it as soon as I can.
