To go veggan?

Or will I be detested by vegetarians, vegans and carnivores?

IME many vegans can take a bit of an all or nothing stance, but I do think I would miss avocado and egg on toast. What do people think?

So, abuse for using a word some people hadn’t seen before and don’t like aside.

I would absolutely only be getting eggs from responsibly sourced hens. My worry is that there is still cruelty in this process, but at the same time I think an attempt to go vegan may fail if I cut out too much. I like non dairy alternatives, so no problem there, but I would miss eggs very much!

UGH
Jesus Christ.
Who gives a shit

SoftSheen · 15/12/2017 21:18

Don't you mean 'ovo-vegetarian'? (As opposed to lacto-ovo-vegetarians, who eat both eggs and dairy).

MissBax · 15/12/2017 21:18

Technically you can't really be vegan by the very definition of the word. You'd just be a plant based eater + eggs. So really just say what you want and don't put a label on it. When do you ever need to announce what you do or don't eat anyway?

SoftSheen · 15/12/2017 21:19

X-post with teaandtoast!

Worriedrose · 15/12/2017 21:19

Aside from battery hens or even most industrial egg production,
How are eggs cruel ???

AssassinatedBeauty · 15/12/2017 21:20

The problem with "veggan" is that it looks like a typo and the rest of your post made little sense as a result. If no one else knows what a word means then people are going to ask!

There are eggs you can get from rescue hens, or get your own rescue hens and have whatever eggs they produce.

I don't think anyone will detest you for eating what you want, as long as you don't say you're a vegan and then eat eggs. Well, even then I don't think anyone would detest you, just be a little annoyed.

MissBax · 15/12/2017 21:20

Sorry I meant you can't be vegan whilst eating eggs, by the very definition of the word

KiaOraAura · 15/12/2017 21:20

What's the AIBU? Eat what you want.

Shrugs shoulders and wanders off....

VladmirsPoutine · 15/12/2017 21:21

So, if everyone on MN advised against it then you'd drop the idea?
And even if language is in constant flux - which I agree it is - 'veggan' just sounds twattish. It does.

overmydeadbody · 15/12/2017 21:21

East what you want.

I suppose one could call me a veggan, as I'm dairy free and veggie, but I'd never use that label.

AssassinatedBeauty · 15/12/2017 21:22

@Worriedrose all male chicks are killed almost immediately as only the female ones are kept. Very often they are sorted and chucked live into a grinder at a day or so old.

Janetjanetjanet · 15/12/2017 21:23

Bit goady really, all this.

twiney · 15/12/2017 21:23

"I like non dairy alternatives, so no problem there, but I would miss eggs very much"

LOL!!!!! So principled when it involves no sacrifice then. Gotcha. You sound like a ME-gan.

Reallytired17 · 15/12/2017 21:24

I’m all for passionate and even abusive debate on here, but I don’t think just ‘fucking hell who gives a shit’ falls into that category.

That is to say, I would not mind ‘yes, YABU, you hypocritical cunt’ as there is a point in there, but just abuse is different.

OP posts:
Worriedrose · 15/12/2017 21:25

AssassinatedBeauty
I specifically said aside from industrial egg production
I get that. But what's cruel about the physical side of chickens laying eggs and us eating them
Ergo. You get a chicken. It lays some eggs. You eat the eggs

Reallytired17 · 15/12/2017 21:25

Yes, I do see that point twiney

OP posts:
echt · 15/12/2017 21:26

YABU for posting without an explanation of your neologism and getting twatty when picked up on it. Is this is how you intend to introduce this re-badged eating preference for which a perfectly adequate name already exists?

Also, why post in AIBU? your food, your choice.

Reallytired17 · 15/12/2017 21:27

Janet, the goad Ines has stemmed from the replies. My original thread was not goady.

Some people manage to make a good point and even be very funny with insults. But here I agree that unfortunately it has attracted people who do not make a good point, are not funny, but think insults alone hoist them into that category.

OP posts:
Reallytired17 · 15/12/2017 21:27

Goadiness, sorry.

OP posts:
Worriedrose · 15/12/2017 21:27

I think I said, who give a shit about the stupid veggan bit,
I mean
Become a smallholder, have animals and grow you're own, and eat everything or be a vegan.
If you can't do the former, do the latter.
It's all just stupid and mixed up. Like pescatarians or flexitarians. It's just utterly ridiculous

AssassinatedBeauty · 15/12/2017 21:28

Sorry, lots of people don't know about the male chicks.

The argument there is that chickens have been bred to produce an unnatural amount of eggs. They don't get a chance to go through the natural behaviour of incubating eggs and rearing chicks as their eggs are always being removed. Plus you're keeping the chicken and using it for your own ends.

TenancyTroublesAgain · 15/12/2017 21:28

Be whatever you want........

Reallytired17 · 15/12/2017 21:29

Yes, you did say that. I presume you give a shit to a point given you answered the thread with your intelligent and witty response.

OP posts:
StickThatInYourPipe · 15/12/2017 21:30

Why don’t you just tell people Your a vegan for when eating at their houses and just eat eggs at home?

Then you don’t have to explain to everyone what you mean.
