To go veggan?

Or will I be detested by vegetarians, vegans and carnivores?

IME many vegans can take a bit of an all or nothing stance, but I do think I would miss avocado and egg on toast. What do people think?

I’m vegan. Lots of people don’t really understand what it is, so I have embarrassing conversations about ‘no, I can’t have that because of the egg/honey/etc’ on repeat in many restaurants.

I do think words matter. If you eat fish but not meat, please call yourself a pescatarian not a vegetarian, and if you eat plant based and eggs, please say ‘I don’t eat animal products except eggs’. Vegans explicitly try not to use any animal products as far as practically possible. You liking eggs isn’t anything to do with practicality, it’s just your preference, so you won’t be a vegan in any sense.

Veggan isn’t a word people will understand-I’ve never heard of it before. Ovo-vegetarian is the accepted term.

Oscha · 16/12/2017 07:29

And all that said, eat what you like, of course! Just use the right term.

Etymology23 · 16/12/2017 08:14

I'm not convinced that domestic hens (where kept free range at home) are too distressed by their regular egg laying. when you see them in the summer taking dust baths and running for food, they certainly "seem" happy, in the same way dogs seem happy when they play. They seem to "like" human company as well - if only because they're the people who feed them. Going broody when there's no cockerel is a bit of a mare because the eggs won't hatch so they just sit and sit and sit getting thinner and thinner. I don't know how to fix that (and obviously it doesn't solve the male chick problem). I'm not sure though that I think for those hens that no life at all is "better" than the one they live.

Obviously industrial situations, or tiny runs with no cover etc are rather different.

Oysterbabe · 16/12/2017 08:38

I've never heard the term Veggan, which is surprising as I know loads of wankers.

Reallytired17 · 16/12/2017 08:44

Do you oyster?

A pity, because I used to think you talked sense, but pleasant and wise sense.

Shitty little digs become more your thing of late have they?

I'm a vegetarian but I don't eat eggs.

In response to the question "will I be detested by vegetarians, vegans and carnivores?" the answer is obviously no.

vwlphb · 16/12/2017 08:59

Well, you certainly have the self-righteous attitude nailed so I think you will be fine if everyone does hate you, as I suspect you will draw strength fro it, like Voldemort or something.*

YABU for dismissing “beegan” as a word but accepting “vegan”. “Beegan” sounds about 1000x cuter and I am instantly better disposed towards Bergman’s than vegans. If avoiding hate is your primary motivation, you should definitely consider beeganism as an option.

*Have never read Harry Potter so this may be an inaccurate assumption.

FFS VEGGANS AND BEEGANS. I’m out.

lljkk · 16/12/2017 09:34

The words don't matter at all to me, but this thread shows that many people have very strong feelings about the words having precise meaning they approve of & agree with and must not be violated.

I wouldn't use anything close to "vegan" or "veggan". if I was OP. If, for some reason, you need to describe how you eat, what about "Mostly plant based but also eggs" or "I don't like meat or milk or honey, but I do eat eggs". No more to say.

Reallytired17 · 16/12/2017 09:36

Well, tbh, I wasn’t necessarily thinking of walking around announcing it as the occasions where I would need to would be minimal. It was more a post about the ethics involved - whether or not eating eggs but shunning any other animal product was OK or (as some vegans think) that action would put me in the first circle of Hell with Brutus and Judas.

But it has turned into annoyance at a word people don’t like.

LunasSpectreSpecs · 16/12/2017 09:39

99.9999999% of people are going to think that a veggan is a vegan who can't spell.

Just tell them you're a vegetarian who doesn't eat dairy.

lljkk · 16/12/2017 09:40

Of course most vegans will look down their nose at you. Chrissy Hynde said, vegans can't respect people who aren't vegan. Alex Baldwin said similar.

Bigoted opinions always reflect worst on the person who holds them. Why care what they think, they obviously don't have opinions worth caring about.

Pru24 · 16/12/2017 09:41

Watch 'what the health' before deciding to eat any animal or any animal product! If researched properly, eggs are not good for your body. Its a menstural cycle guys :/

numbereightyone · 16/12/2017 09:42

Eat what the fuck you want Confused

Reallytired17 · 16/12/2017 09:42

A tasty one, though Wink

I think only you should decide whether you're morally comfortable with that.

Booboobooboo84 · 16/12/2017 09:47

Well if you eat what you want but don’t preach to people you can call yourself whatever you want for all I care. And if your not telling people your food choices why would they know to care???

Reallytired17 · 16/12/2017 09:50

Because the thread isn’t about other people, it’s about whether or not it is reasonable to eat eggs.

Probably should have posted on the vegan board but was interested in veggie views too.

OP posts:
DurhamDurham · 16/12/2017 09:51

I’m not sure why you would need to announce it to anyone so I doubt it would make people hate you. I don’t think people really care what other people eat, I think what pisses people off is someone being all smug and superior because of their choices. And because they make up words like veggan Hmm

Booboobooboo84 · 16/12/2017 09:54

But it is about other people. You wanted to know what vegans vegetarians and carnivores would think. You said that in your op. And my question is why do you care. You have your own opinions and ethics formed from your life experience. If your happy to eat eggs then crack on

Shadowboy · 16/12/2017 09:55

I hate all these new terms. Just eat what you want and leave the rest. As long as you can give reason to yourself and no one else for your eating habits - fine.

We don’t eat lots of things but I don’t create a name for it. I don’t eat pork, non- grass fed beef. We only eat our own poultry and own eggs. No idea what the heck I’d call that?

Go for it.

Reallytired17 · 16/12/2017 09:57

Yes, I think it has been well established that using a word people don’t like = utter tosser with no redeeming features whatsoever, and it is just fine to swear at, pull faces at, infer she is a wanker and a twat.

In fact this week alone I have had several exceptionally upsetting incidents. I’m trying to look forward and be positive (to new year and possibly being healthier) started what I thought was a harmless thread on here and I’ve had shitloads of abuse now and I am fucking sick of it. I do not care that you do not like the word, that does NOT make it OK to be as fucking aggressive, nasty and downright cruel as some of you have been.

And yes, I KNOW I am letting it all get to me. I know I am. But what even gives any of you the right at all.
