Hi all, new to forum and looking for some advice.

My neighbours tumble dryer is on 10 hrs everyday. We can hear it in all rooms of our home and its next to the party wall. It on beteween 7am and 10.30pm. Everyday as best we can tell (we work full time) and every weekend. Its been like this for months. Quite honesty its making me very ill. We've been round several times and invited her to listen to noise which she agrees she can hear. She's making no effort to improve it though. We've made many suggestions such as pads, etc. Quite frankly i think she is inconsiderate. What do you guys think?

Just seen this online - "Growers need to ventilate the plants with large extractor fans, which generally emit a low hum. If every morning, at exactly the same time, it sounds as if someone next door is starting up their hovercraft, then it's probably a cannabis farm warming up for the day."

LoneParenting101 · 10/12/2017 23:11

I use my tumble dryer to heat my room when my boiler breaks! My tumble dryer is huge and creates a lot of humidity! Which coincidentally is just the right type of humidity for plant growing! The type that steams up your windows!!!!

Janetsadick · 10/12/2017 23:23

OP it’s the fans.

100%. The noise you can hear (stop start) is them rotating from left to right.

Snow on the roof is old school. Sounds like they’re growing in a room. Which they will have insulated and heat won’t be escaping.

It’s the fans. Crime stoppers online. Report commercial weed growing. Make yourself some quick cash and shut the noise up at the same time.

feral · 10/12/2017 23:33

OP why are you dithering about and not calling 101 right now?

I'd've called the police as soon as the cannabis smell started, you don't want that in your house.

franktheskank · 10/12/2017 23:38

Op is there any way you can go over there and ask them what the noise is and say you can smell cannabis? Then they can either stop it without involving the police or find ways to stop it bothering you.

I don't think it's nice to go grassing people up for growing a bit of weed personallyConfused

Babaroll · 10/12/2017 23:49

I had the same problem a number of years ago. She had it on every hour she was in the house. It was often on until 11pm at night and went on again at 6am. It resonated through every room of our terrace. At the time I didn't have kids and she had three so I wasn't sure but now I have three of my own I use a dryer myself but probably only a max of 5 hours per week. It was awful, it destroyed our enjoyment of our home. We tried to raise it with them too, no success, they were told that she was entitled to use a domestic appliance in reasonable hours. I wondered if she was running a business but never saw anything come in or leave. Her electric bills must have been massive!

Quite often with these grow ops the 'staff' are immigrants who have been tricked to come here with the promise of a legitimate job; once they get here their documents are confiscated and they are forced to work as slaves.
So that's not very nice either.

HeebieJeebies456 · 11/12/2017 00:53

Is there any way to work.out if its a tumble dryer or a weed farm?

yes-via the police!

Just because it looks/sounds like a tumble dryer doesn't mean it is a tumble dryer......
could be a homemade/pimped up contraption that churns the weed to turn it into cannabis oil or butter.

either way they're taking the piss - especially considering they have a chronically ill child in the house.
constant noise/vibrations over a period of time can definitely make you ill so god knows what effect that's having on their own ill child Hmm

HeebieJeebies456 · 11/12/2017 00:57

growing a couple/few plants for personal use is very different to running a farm.
i'd report if i suspected a farm simply because of the fire risk

OkPedro · 11/12/2017 00:59

How do you know it's on my 19 hours a day if you and your oh work full time?

fizzthecat1 · 11/12/2017 01:03

OP it must be something else no one in their right mind would have a tumble dryer on for that length of time! Bills would cost a fortune!!

TheHodgeHeg · 11/12/2017 02:05

OkPedro if you'd read the OPs posts you'd see that she's answered this. Sometimes she works from home, sometimes her husband pops back, they hear it at weekends etc. etc.

selassi · 11/12/2017 02:09

bull shitit's a tumble dryer she is doing something dodgy

SenseCheckMe · 11/12/2017 12:51

Been to EH today and they said there is nothing they can do its a domestic appliance. It doesnt matter how long it runs for and if we can hear it in our home.

In that case ring back and say you don't know what it is. It's machinery causing a nuisance

BlurryFace · 11/12/2017 12:55

We rented a shithole with a useless combination washer/dryer and it really did take forever to "dry" clothes - 3 hours and it would still need to air for a bit, we also rented a place with a laundry room full of decrepit old dryers, one of which left things damp after 2+hours, so x2/3 loads due to a sick child...I can see how it would be possible for someone to make so much noise with a poor dryer.

But the weed smell as well does sound like it could be a weed farm, which would need checking out because they can cause fires with all the dodgy electric stuff going 24/7.

Tatiannatomasina · 11/12/2017 12:59

Ring the police now. Tell them its a cannabis farm. They can get a warrant and take action.

metalmum15 · 11/12/2017 13:16

Presumably if it is a weed farm you will be able to smell cannabis most of the day, not just periodically. Did the smell start around the same time as the noise? Because if so that's decidedly dodgy. I would definitely log something with the police if you think something is cracking off.

OtterInDisgrace · 11/12/2017 13:26

That’s a pretty poor show from the EH. I font suppose you’re a council or HA tenant? If so, phone them with your concerns and definitely mention the smell of weed.

SenseCheckMe · 11/12/2017 13:28

HA notified. They were more helpful.

StayCalmMary · 11/12/2017 17:35

They must be making some money on the growing end of things to afford that bill 😅

Holisticlady · 11/12/2017 17:40

How does she afford the electricity bill?
I would just ask her to do something about it as it's driving you insane!
Some people are so thoughtless!

blaukop · 11/12/2017 17:42

Hmmmm. I smell a big fat rat here. I think she's running a business from home. I say that, because some years ago, I lived in a flat with another flat above me. I had to get up early in the morning to go to work, and these morons would come in about 10 pm, and start using the washing machine! Complained to the landlord who was a sop, and didn't do anything about it. Go to citizens advice bureau and your local council, this really sounds beyond the pale! Good luck!

manicmij · 11/12/2017 17:49

Worth contacting your Council Environmental Dept? as it is a noise causing a nuisance. Have you googled your neighbour 're laundry services if you think this may be what she is doing. I know lots of property have restrictions not allowing a business. Definitely a noise nuisance.

Someonessnackbitch · 11/12/2017 17:51

I have my dryer on between 8am-7pm but if I could I’d have it on longer. If you spoke to me about it so I was aware (as you have done) then I would definitely do everything I could to reduce the noise. Your neighbour should do more!
