The erosion of women

IHATEPeppaPig · 03/12/2017 22:14

I know, I know 'not another Trans thread' BUT, I am truly interested in people's opinions on this - I was always of the thought that I don't really care how anyone expresses themselves, carry on as you wish and I do still think this to varying degrees but I am concerned about the Trans agenda moving forwards and the erosion of women and reading through Twitter I found the following articles attached to this tweet:

I'm not personally interested in breastfeeding or giving birth. But the #terf assumption that these abilities are "biologically" reserved for AFAB is just one thing: wrong.

www.nytimes.com/2017/12/02/health/uterus-transplant-baby.html

www.thestranger.com/queer-issue-2017/2017/06/21/25225867/my-first-time-breastfeeding-my-daughter

Now, I found the second article creepy - particularly where they mention that they 'got off' on breastfeeding and I'm not entirely sure how factual it actually is but it's scary that people are using this to prove how defunct 'ciswomen' (I HATE this term) are?

a couple of people have said they worry about sounding anti-gay - I think anyone who thinks that really is off their nut so I wouldn't worry about that tbh.

But that does worry me because the trans people have got onto the Gay Bus and now a lot of people see them as one group.

I don’t see how trans and gay are part of the same group as surely being trans has nothing to do with sexuality.

OhThisbloodyComputer · 05/12/2017 13:05

@SmileEachDay

Understand. But didn't mean it that way, I promise.

Sorry.

Anyway. Must go. Thanks for telling me. (I'd like to ask what Spidey means, but I'll leave that for another day)

FizzyWaterAndElderflower · 05/12/2017 13:11

(I'd like to ask what Spidey means, but I'll leave that for another day)

Right. Yes.

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 05/12/2017 13:36

See i dont get why someone doesnt know what spidey means

Its such a pop culture reference

But im sure theres loads of references i dont get Grin

ReanimatedSGB · 05/12/2017 14:08

Actually, I think I remember Computer from another thread...

TammySwansonTwo · 05/12/2017 14:43

sparkly you're talking about the Reddit Incel community. Some of the most odious content I've ever seen, and frankly exactly the kind of men who would think it very clever to use self-identification to catch women off guard in female spaces. Some of them already admit to having raped women, many say rape should be legalised.

OhThisbloodyComputer · 05/12/2017 14:52

@ReanimatedSGB

That is brilliant!

I didn't get the sea lions reference before. Where was this cartoon from?

Well that's me shamed.

Oh well.

(Spidey is popular culture? I'm guessing there's a generation gap here. All I can think of is "The Spiders from Mars" but that's giving away my age)

HidingBehindTheWallpaper · 05/12/2017 15:46

Oh come oh Computer.
You know what Spidey sense is. Don’t take the piss.

OhThisbloodyComputer · 05/12/2017 16:06

@hidingbehindthewallpaper

I do now, I put it into Bing.

(I refuse to use Google. It is one of four terribly ominous IT companies, along with Amazon, Facebook and Apple, which are far far worse than the impotent buffoons who talk about mens rights.)

I promise you, I was not 'taking the piss'.

I do have some sympathy over this whole trans/Terf whatever argument, but have absolutely no idea what to think. Also, I'm not making any definitive statements, as I wanted to ask questions.

Now I've learned that means I'm a Sea Lion.

What's the deal with Reddit? It's not exactly a top selling newspaper is it, so why worry? Do you really think they are influential. I've never met a Reddit reader and I've been to many many pubs.

Without side lining the original debate, do you think that people online are almost medieval in their suspicion of each other?

Datun · 05/12/2017 17:00

What's the deal with Reddit? It's not exactly a top selling newspaper is it, so why worry?

Because the TRAs (along with bandwagon jumping incels and MRAs) who frequent Reddit, are managing to change the law.

None of this would matter if the people who go online spouting this absolute rubbish were not influential.

Unfortunately, they are. Very.

SaturdayNightAtTheMovies · 05/12/2017 18:08

I'm amazed that there are people who, even after having it explained to them and even upon hearing that true transwomen and gay friends are expressing concern, anger and frustration over these proposals, are still saying they can't see a problem!

Nyx1 · 05/12/2017 18:18

Saturday, I am someone who has one of those friends. We haven't discussed it in detail since I explained about changing rooms, hospital wards etc but I think the gender dysphoria issue is at the front of her mind and it baffles me that a supposedly intelligent person can really believe in "woman feelz".

I think she's probably on the case about Trump bots etc so I don't get it either really. I'm trying not to go full on at anyone about it!

SaturdayNightAtTheMovies · 05/12/2017 18:37

I'm just really hoping that the government won't pass this.

PossumBottom · 05/12/2017 18:45

It's a really bad idea to take baby away from mum, especially in the first 'golden hour' that cements the hormonal cascades and establishes a breastfeeding relationship between mother and baby.

Nyx1 · 05/12/2017 18:59

one thing I wonder, if the transitioning teens are mostly girls wanting to be boys, what effect is that going to have on all this? Not on having babies etc but on the trans movement as a whole. Will it switch the dynamic of men basically finding bizarre ways to erase women?

HidingBehindTheWallpaper · 05/12/2017 19:00

I’ve a question, hypothetical but I’m intrigued.
If someone transitions then do they ‘historically’ change gender.

Let’s say that someone who was the first man to do something, walk in the moon for example, transitioned, would they then become the first woman to walk on the moon?

Datun · 05/12/2017 19:02

HidingBehindTheWallpaper

Indeed they do. Bruce Jenner is the first woman to win, whatever he won at the Olympics.

Despite that event not even being open to women!

HidingBehindTheWallpaper · 05/12/2017 19:12

And him being a man at the time of the event? Oh ffs.
So an actual woman, you know one with a vagina, periods and a different muscle structure, could win this event for the first time but wouldn’t be the first woman to do it?

SmileEachDay · 05/12/2017 19:30

ohthis

I have run out of believing.

“What’s the thing with Reddit?” You’re on an internet forum. You clearly know that they are full of people, and that this gives them power.

Stop pretending to be a naive fool who just wants us all to like you.

Because I don’t think that’s true.

Nyx1 · 05/12/2017 20:22

Hiding, there was a thing about the directors of Matrix claiming to be the first female winners of an award but I can't find it now...did I misremember it? I'm finding a lot of stuff saying they only talk about their transition because the press wouldn't leave them alone, which I realise might well be true.

MrsKCastle · 05/12/2017 20:47

Nyx, there was a report in the media about Bridget Jones being the first trilogy directed completely be women. Some people responded saying something along the lines of "Check your facts, what about the Wachowski sisters directing the Matrix trilogy?" And the author of the report published a correction, despite the Wachowski sisters being the Wachowski brothers when the movie was made.

Nyx1 · 05/12/2017 20:56

MrsKCastle, thank you for that.

I do feel less thick for being confused now I've seen the explanation Grin

PencilsInSpace · 05/12/2017 21:11

The thing with Reddit is there are a few subreddits where trans people talk amongst themselves. It can be very revealing reading what they say to each other vs. the image they try to project in the media.

OhThisbloodyComputer · 05/12/2017 21:44

@SmileEachDay

I honestly don't go on Reddit. Life is too short.

I came on this site as I thought it might be a bit more friendly.
Good grief.

why go there if it's horrible?

If people are hateful, they generally don't have much influence, surely.

I'm not pretending to be naive. I don't spend as much time on the Internet as everyone else. Why go and look up people who are angry?

Having said that, I should follow my own advice.

Why can't we have a civilised exchange?
