Should the teacher be saying this to 5/6 year olds?

Hello.

Just a quick one, really. My 5 year old never used to say this to anyone considering it's never really said in the home - "use your common sense!"

I asked him, "who says that?," to which he responds "[Teacher's name]."

Do you think that a Year 1 primary school teacher should say things like that to 5/6 year olds, considering how rude and abrupt it is to say something like it? Personally, I find it quite ridiculous considering the fact that not even DS15's Year 10 secondary school teachers say things like that.

I think it depends on the context. If the teacher says it a polite way as a response to a question then they are giving the child permission to make their own decision.

I think there are bigger things to worry about in the world. And I say things like this to my secondary school age classes, I have no idea how it would be considered rude!!

In a world where our 5/6yr olds are set ridiculous educational targets, being encouraged to access their common sense makes sense, really!

What is rude? Unless its being used inappropriately are they not being asked to think about something to come to their own conclusion?

I don’t think it’s bad, teachers have to be abrupt sometimes like telling them to be quiet and shout if they are misbehaving. It’s not like it’s s bad suggestion unless you mean he is being sarcastic.

My 5 year old son tries to take his trousers off before his shoes on a daily basis, I have certainly had a word about common sense!

But the thing is, the tone with which he's imitating his teacher makes her sound pretty nasty... Seems a bit iffy to me - but I don't know, probably am a bit sensitive.

Have 5/6 year olds developed common sense yet.

It depends how it is said as to if it is rude or abrupt, but I would say it's a fairly standard response.

Child: 'shall I put my coat on?'
Teacher 'its November use your common sense:

Child 'ive finished with the paint shall I put it away:
Teacher 'use your common sense's

Child 'this felt tip has ran out, shall I throw it away'
Teacher 'use your common sense'

Not ideal and not a very respectful way to speak to a child tbh but pretty standard ime. If the aim is to try and get kids to problem solve for themselves there would be many more polite ways to say it.
