Should the teacher be saying this to 5/6 year olds?

Hello.

Just a quick one, really. My 5 year old never used to say this to anyone considering it's never really said in the home - "use your common sense!"

I asked him, "who says that?," to which he responds "[Teacher's name]."

Do you think that a Year 1 primary school teacher should say things like that to 5/6 year olds, considering how rude and abrupt it is to say something like it? Personally, I find it quite ridiculous considering the fact that not even DS15's Year 10 secondary school teachers say things like that.

Cheers.

Haven't you heard of night school?

Night school for Y3?? Why did nobody ever tell me? Grin

RebelRogue · 19/11/2017 22:21

OP this is not rocket science, just use your common sense Grin

WildBluebelles · 19/11/2017 22:21

As in, I go and teach Year 3s about what I do - other staff do other Year groups and we do different schools. Currently, I'm technically a teacher of Year 3 - Year 3 teacher... Isn't that a way of describing it?

No, that's a load of shite frankly. You are not technically a teacher of year 3. How much do you need to teach the year 3s about what you do? Are they studying medicine?

I am pretty certain you are not a doctor because sorry to say it, a doctor would not express themselves as you have in your posts. And a doctor who did the odd school talk would NEVER describe themselves as a year 3 teacher. You are full of crap.

ThisIsMyUsername02123 · 19/11/2017 22:23

juddyrockingcloggs No. This was a spare office that this school in particular have and allow me to use, so I gladly accepted.

Anasnake No, it's business-based. Nothing to do with medicine or anything like that.

a year 3 teacher to me is someone who has qualified as a teacher and permanently works in a school, as a teacher.

You teach year 3 pupils about a specific topic and I’m guessing you’re not a qualified teacher.

so hate to break it to you, but teaching year 3s does not one a year 3 teacher make. (It does make you sound like you’re trying to big yourself up, and I’m sending a flounce coming on because you’re not getting the response you want to your AIBU)

Gets even better. Well I am glad that junior doctors are being put to good use by teaching primary school children about business. Maybe this is why the NHS is failing.

Amanduh · 19/11/2017 22:25

Apart from the absolute made up load of rubbish bit regarding doctors, teachers and night shifts... yes yabu. Ffs. How could anybody think that's inappropriate. Jesus.

DivisionBelle · 19/11/2017 22:26

This is all potentially thoroughly identifying, OP, a parent of a Yr 1 child who is a Yr3 teacher as a sideline of a heavy ‘real ‘ job...yr 1 teacher has squeaky voice.,...

You are SO going to end up in the blasted Sun!

FlowerPot1234 · 19/11/2017 22:26

Not sure where this doctor stuff came from, the OP has never said she was a doctor.

I still haven't a clue what she does though. Teaching Year 3s about business that involves nightshifts.

Anyway, I'm still applauding the teacher for telling the child to use their common sense. What a breath of fresh air.

ineedamoreadultieradult · 19/11/2017 22:26

I have been into my son's school to talk to them about something related to my work, I didn't realise I could now call myself a teacher. Can't wait to use that one.

Wilburissomepig · 19/11/2017 22:29

To be fair, if your Y3 DS is telling you to use your common sense, the wee fella sounds like he knows what he's talking about.

Ceesadoo · 19/11/2017 22:31

I think the tone of that sentence can sometimes be deliberately rude or cutting. 5 year olds can’t really be expected to have common sense because.. they are 5.

Valerrie · 19/11/2017 22:31

You are not a teacher.

What business based things are you teaching year 3? Business isn't in the primary curriculum. How do you have your own office in a school? In all the schools I've taught in the only person to have an office is the head and possibly the deputy in a large school.

Why do you have to work nights? No school staff work nights.

Haffiana · 19/11/2017 22:33

OP, to me you sound like a sad fantasist who will say and invent anything to prove herself right.

Please get help before you pass this on to your children.

Gottagetmoving · 19/11/2017 22:33

I've heard it all now.
'Use your common sense'.... being objected to and someone being offended by it.
Where are these people coming from, because I can't believe they are real...I really can't.

WildBluebelles · 19/11/2017 22:33

Oh man, that is embarrassing. Sorry- I misread it. I thought she said she was a doctor.

Still don't buy any of this though.

AuntGant · 19/11/2017 22:33

Saying use your common sense to year 1 children is not particularly helpful, it's common sense that children at 5 & 6 don't have 'common sense'.

DontMakeMeShushYou · 19/11/2017 22:36

This thread has brightened up my dull Sunday evening.

I bet the OP is wishing her primary teachers had told her about common sense. Then she could have used some and realised that posting a load of crap was not a good idea.

CherryChasingDotMuncher · 19/11/2017 22:38

I didn’t know they taught Y3 pupils about working in a nightclub 😉

MoistCantaloupe · 19/11/2017 22:42

Want to play ‘guess then job’.

Work night shifts and teach year 3s all about it. Limo driver, blackjack dealer, or the person who waves the flashy sticks to land the planes. Did I win?

DontMakeMeShushYou · 19/11/2017 22:43

What rubbish. Of course 5/6 year olds have common sense. Okay, they're still developing it, it's a work in progress, but they (mostly) do have some.

In all of this, we don't actually know what the teacher was saying 'use your common sense' in relation to. FFS, we don't even know that it was said to a Y1 pupil. Perhaps the teacher has been overheard saying it to the TA!

TovaGoldCoin · 19/11/2017 22:43

Do you work for a toy company that makes say.... Small plastic construction bricks? We've had their "education specialists" in... And they sat year 2 kids on the carpet for an hour and bored them rigid...

MrsOverTheRoad · 19/11/2017 22:45

I always hated this saying as a child because I simply didn't UNDERSTAND it.

What did it mean? I used to worry about it...what was it? Nobody explained it.
