Should the teacher be saying this to 5/6 year olds?

Hello.

Just a quick one, really. My 5 year old never used to say this to anyone considering it's never really said in the home - "use your common sense!"

I asked him, "who says that?," to which he responds "[Teacher's name]."

Do you think that a Year 1 primary school teacher should say things like that to 5/6 year olds, considering how rude and abrupt it is to say something like it? Personally, I find it quite ridiculous considering the fact that not even DS15's Year 10 secondary school teachers say things like that.

Cheers.

'Use your common sense' though is just going to make a very young child feel bad for not knowing something and for asking for help. What's wrong with saying 'Hmm what's the weather like?' when a child asks if they should wear their coat? If the objective is to encourage them to problem solve rather than highlight their lack of sense?

Wilburissomepig · 19/11/2017 22:07

Doesn't sound like a primary school teacher, but maybe other teachers can enlighten me as to whether you need to work all night at the weekend. Or maybe you were a doctor on that thread?

This thread is getting more and more bizarre

CoffeeBreakIn5 · 19/11/2017 22:07

Exactly Mxyzptik it shuts down the communication. If a child still can't work out the answer they're going to think they don't have any common sense and that will affect them. I'd be annoyed if someone spoke to my children like that and I'm not overprotective at all.

Mrskeats · 19/11/2017 22:07

part of my job real job what are you on about?

ThisIsMyUsername02123 · 19/11/2017 22:08

Wilburissomepig Never said I didn't like her - I would have to know someone to like/dislike them... I don't know the woman. And anyway, how would you pick out tone out of a piece of text?

WildBluebelles · 19/11/2017 22:08

This is a side job, WildBluebelles. I teach about my real job. I work in various schools doing this - it's part of my duties

At least try to make it believable. So you are a year 3 teacher at your son's school but it's just a side job from your real job? What does yr 3 at the school do when you are doing your real job?
In your other post you said you had recently qualified and were the family breadwinner. Doesn't sound like an NQ teacher post to me.

LikeASoulWithoutAMind · 19/11/2017 22:10

Sooooo you’re a primary school teacher with their own office (the Head maybe? Cause no one else has their own office generally...) and You also work nights in a second job?

Wow OP you are actually superhuman. I know a lot of teachers and not a single one has the energy to work in a second job, let alone nights.

Oh and use your common sense sounds fine to me.

GerdaLovesLili · 19/11/2017 22:10

DontMakeMeShushYou

I'm sure on a thread I read recently you said you were working nights. hmm.

Haven't you heard of night school? Grin

Gaelach · 19/11/2017 22:10
  • you're a year 3 teacher in your son's school
  • you see your sons teacher twice daily in the corridor
  • you work night shifts
  • you have your own office
  • you visit other schools as part of your job
  • you are Donald Trump
ThisIsMyUsername02123 · 19/11/2017 22:11

I'm not an NQ teacher, I'm not a doctor. I'm just a poor woman that's been roped into doing multiple duties as part of my job. Unfortunately, I have duties to fulfil by doing nights and working in schools.

"What does yr 3 at the school do when you are doing your real job?"
They get taught? By a teacher? You know, that gets paid specifically to teach?

Anasnake · 19/11/2017 22:12

So you're not a teacher ???

CherryChasingDotMuncher · 19/11/2017 22:13

FGS.

Another thread which makes me wonder how the hell teachers put up with such ridiculous parents

elQuintoConyo · 19/11/2017 22:14

common sense?

Are you Kate Cambridge?

Goerge doesn't do common.

Wilburissomepig · 19/11/2017 22:14

Erm, by the way you're expressing yourself in your posts? You're a teacher you say? Righto ...

WildBluebelles · 19/11/2017 22:14

I honestly don't get this. A doctor who might visit schools from time to time would never describe themselves as a year 3 teacher. You bump into the other teacher daily? How, when you are going round other schools and working nights?

It also seems pretty unusual for an NQ doctor to be school-based. If you were a nurse, maybe more believable, but again can't understand the 'I am a year 3 teacher' stuff.

WildBluebelles · 19/11/2017 22:15

Erm, by the way you're expressing yourself in your posts? You're a teacher you say? Righto

Even scarier- she is a doctor now.

Mrskeats · 19/11/2017 22:16

Going to report this thread it’s a load of rubbish

Wilburissomepig · 19/11/2017 22:16

Sorry Bluebelles I can't keep up! 😂

juddyrockingcloggs · 19/11/2017 22:16

I call bullshit

ThisIsMyUsername02123 · 19/11/2017 22:17

As in, I go and teach Year 3s about what I do - other staff do other Year groups and we do different schools. Currently, I'm technically a teacher of Year 3 - Year 3 teacher... Isn't that a way of describing it?

No don't! I'm just waiting for the OP to tell us that she's an astronaut too.

Do you have your own office in all the schools?

Anasnake · 19/11/2017 22:19
