To think zoella is lying

Skip to 33. The calendar that her own company makes she says it's all down to boots and they choose the £50 price. She's been doing products for years and has full ownership of her company. She's not new or anything to releasing products

It's been on sale for two months and it's her name on it and was apparently only sad in the last few days when the backlash started.

Her body language is all off, avoiding eye contact and looking around. She says shes not in it for the money but has a long history of releasing cheap stuff for high prices.

ie those sad presentless days from Xmas to 6 Jan, when the tree is taken down.

Zoella has a deal with Superdrug for beauty/cosmetics and a deal with Boots for her lifestyle range.
The lifestyle range isn't as easy to fake as the cosmetics: no-ne minds paying £30 or so for 20 little lipsticks etc.
Her lifestyle: candles, scents, baking and writing notes. That's it. That is all she has to offer in her lifestyle collection. So she had pretty much nothing to put into a calendar. So she put in pretty much nothing. Some marketing person looked at the list and thought 'Hmm, we sell her candles for £10 each and we sell her baubles for £10 each so with everything else £50 is about right'. But the calendar doesn't have full size candles in and her baubles are made of glass and contain perfume which doesn't come under the 'lifestyle' agreement. It looks to me as if everything was put together to be fun and cheap like a stocking should be or like a cracker: not to be a collection of things to last a lifetime. If this had been £15 I'd have bought one for my 13YO: she loves the kind of thing in this calendar. There's been a disconnect in the product placement cost vs quality somewhere.

Maudlinmaud · 15/11/2017 14:04

confuzzled where did you get that? I usually buy the £1 chocolate variety but might be persuaded to change it up.

ManicUnicorn · 15/11/2017 14:08

Ive always disliked Zoella. I find her fake and childish and immature. There are some great YouTubers out there but she's not one of them and her popularity has always baffled me.

DotDixie · 15/11/2017 14:11

Even if legally she couldn't choose the price of the products and it was all down to Boots she didn't once say she disagrees with the price/sees why people think it is over priced.
She only responded after the backlash with a pathetic excuse showing how out of touch (or maybe just plain greedy) she is!!!

And now theres this whole pathetic "apology" over her tweets once again more excuses. As a person on twitter said how could she tweet about/celebrate australia passing the law on gay marriage and not apologise for the homophobic and transphobic tweets???

This whole problem would minimalise so much if she just gave a genuine real apology!! But saying that, that must be a very difficult thing for a fake person to do.

Itsgonnabeacoldone · 15/11/2017 14:21

Someone has uncovered a tweet from boots where they confirm that they are charging the RRP for the calender as set by the supplier. Now is that enough evidence to say she is lying? Her company is the supplier. She's been beyond stupid.

Boots are lying if they say their suppliers set RRP

whiskyowl · 15/11/2017 14:25

Zoella will just say Boots customer service have got the wrong end of the stick/are lying. But it does honk, doesn't it?

DixieFlatline · 15/11/2017 14:29

Maybe they will both need to get real jobs now to pay the mortgage.

I assumed they'd bought their house without needing to take out a mortgage, in the same way I think Pewdiepie and Marzia did (might be wrong about them too but fairly certain I'm not).

battenbergbutterfly · 15/11/2017 14:30

She’s vacuous, dull and self indulgent and I would only watch her videos to make sure I avoid anything she touches or has her name on it. Her sickly sweet ‘fairy lights and unicorn’s farting rainbows and glitter’ life is probably one of the most annoying things I’ve ever watched.

MargaretCavendish · 15/11/2017 14:31

Boots are lying if they say their suppliers set RRP

I'm no expert so apologies if wrong, but surely a supplier does set RRP, but shop decides whether to follow? Eg if I buy a book the RRP is on the back of it, so clearly printed there by publisher - but shops can sell it cheaper. Isn't that why it's 'recommended' and not 'the price'?

Scabbersley · 15/11/2017 14:34

If zoella is working exclusively for boots with this calendar, she will cost it and tell boots what the wholesale price is (she won't obviously but her minions). She can say she thinks it should be sold at x, but if that doesn't fit with boots pricing strategy or margins they will set the retail price.

I manufactured something for a high street chain once. The wholesale price was about 19 iirc, they were going to market it at around 55. When I saw it in the shops it was 85!! I didn't have any say as it wasn't my own brand.

LizzieSiddal · 15/11/2017 14:47

The Boots tweet proves to everyone that she's lying. What an absolute cow!

There will be so many young teenagers who really look up to her. I'm so glad they will find out how phoney she actually is, but I expect some of them will be devastated. My own Niece who is 13, worships herHmm

schoolgaterebel · 15/11/2017 14:48

She put her name on it, of course she knew what Boots intended to sell it for (or she recommended what they sell it for)....does she think her fans are stupid!

AuntyElle · 15/11/2017 14:52

I known the Independent online is pretty trashy these days, but this is pure advertising shite...

To think zoella is lying
SingingBabooshkaBadly · 15/11/2017 14:54

astoundedgoat sorry have been out for hours. The industry I work in is rather different, in that there would be a (very hefty!) upfront fee before a single product is sold plus a percentage sales revenue once that fee had earned out. Really don't know what Boots terms are like but I do know none of these top vloggers put their name to anything with it being very worthwhile for them!

QuimReaper · 15/11/2017 15:12

Surely the key word here is Recommended, i.e. Recommended Retail Price? i.e. the supplier "recommends" a retail price but the distributor is free to try and get more for it to up their margin, or flog it at 20% off to increase sales, or practically give it away to at least cover their costs in the January sales?

I've just watched the review video and my jaw actually dropped when he pulled out an envelope full of glitter from one of the doors. Not even in a cute little bottle or anything. An envelope full of glitter.

QuimReaper · 15/11/2017 15:12

I'm genuinely in shock. That stuff literally sells for pennies, let alone to manufacture!

QuimReaper · 15/11/2017 15:13

AND THE STICKERS?!?!?!!?!!!!!!!

STICKERS!!!!!!!

QuimReaper · 15/11/2017 15:14

This is even cheaper than the kind of stuff you'd put in a freebie giveaway.

Fifty. Quid.

jay55 · 15/11/2017 15:21

Don’t people send envelopes of glitter to their enemies?

OneFlewOverTheDodosNest · 15/11/2017 15:27

Was just thinking of the £100k in the bank and a thought occurred to me - do you think she can put the cost of her new house against her taxes, seeing as she's a lifestyle blogger? Because to a certain extent it IS a cost of business...

Itsgonnabeacoldone · 15/11/2017 15:33

Zoella spent 500k buying the house next door to her 2 million pound house to use as an office. I do wander if she was creative with the accounts also

Zoellas post advertising it along with her other Christmas merch is here m.youtube.com/watch?v=3ZOioxEGYpQ

I'll spare you the details but honestly I've seen what this does to some youngsters (my friends daughter) and they should be ashamed of themselves - she's sent emails, letters, presents and all sorts to them.

Whoever mentioned a mortgage they own multiple properties which they rent out. They do not have a mortgage and can most like retire right now (her boyfriend mentions it in one of his vlogs).

The bottom line, as far as I'm concerned, is they've become very greedy - they've all got PR managers. They've nothing to fall back on. I saw an interview with zoellas brother on tv ages ago and he's a qualified thatcher and as far as he's concerned this is just temporary and when it no longer works out he's going back to that - I've seen videos of his and they are very very different. Yes there's merchandise but mostly it's pranks.

The helloworld disaster still hasn't been addressed.

I fully expect this thread to disappear, criticism does.

dont people send envelopes of glitter to their enemies

Hmm I've never done that. Honest. Grin
