Skip to 33. The calendar that her own company makes she says it's all down to boots and they choose the £50 price. She's been doing products for years and has full ownership of her company. She's not new or anything to releasing products

It's been on sale for two months and it's her name on it and was apparently only sad in the last few days when the backlash started.

Her body language is all off, avoiding eye contact and looking around. She says shes not in it for the money but has a long history of releasing cheap stuff for high prices.

Not sure how RRP works in all sectors, but in my old company we couldn't even suggest an RRP to the retailer.

We couldn't talk about retail pricing AT ALL.

Not sure how it works in publishing though, I know until the 90s they still had resale price maintenance in that sector.

For chocolate bars with price on them, these are of course created by a supplier but generally only sold in wholesale convenience like Nisa/Booker for small independent/symbol store owners. They can then set the price higher or lower as they like, but these customers tend to like PMPs as they have a good value perception as they say.

I was at an ad industry event last year and went to a panel session on the whole YouTube phenomenon (I'm a total media geek and find the whole thing fascinating!). Some expert in talent management (not from Gleam) said that essentially they treat Youtubers careers like footballers - they know they will have a relatively short career so they need to either make as much money as they can or have a backup plan.

The reason I think Zoe isn't that savvy is that she's clearly taking the first route - her management have said 'give us your name and we'll make you as much money as we can' - but all she has is her name, so anything that risks her name risks her future income. Which she seems to get when it comes to content but not outside of that.

Others are either trying to diversify or have something to fall back on (Tanya Burr is trying to act, the Pixiwoo sisters have said they'd just go back to being makeup artists if it ended, Niomi Smart has a law degree etc....) - Zoe doesn't so she's stuck being a chirpy teenager trying to claw all the cash that she can before her bubble bursts!

It looks like she and her boyfriend are setting up their own management company at the moment, so it will be really interesting to see if that changes anything (and if they'll actually do anything or just be the figureheads to attract the talent....)

peppykoala · 15/11/2017 16:15

Sorry, didn't realise how.long that was!!

wizzywig · 15/11/2017 16:22

Has she done the makeup free, hair in a pony tail sobby sobby video yet?

BoyFromTheBigBadCity · 15/11/2017 16:22

In that video the products she’s showing have the price in them, she was not unaware at all

LuckyAmy1986 · 15/11/2017 16:30

What’s really annoying is even if her bubble does burst now which is unlikely, she’s already set for life from this. Does that annoy anyone else?!

troodiedoo · 15/11/2017 16:36

I think zoella is nit wit.

But boots do have form for pricing shit at the 50/60 pound mark so it can then go on to be the "bargain" star gift around half that.

NumberEightyOne · 15/11/2017 16:39

I didn't know who Zoella was but I have just read about this and Boots and this woman should hang their heads in fucking shame. A young fan of this woman would have to work 9 hours in a minimum wage job to pay for this shit. She's a fucking con artist.

PollytheDolly · 15/11/2017 16:41

My god she’s irritating.

BehindTheScenes17 · 15/11/2017 17:05

On a related matter, you may also want to read this very insightful article about another kind of exploitation going on in Zoella's industry/ camp (no I am not the author)

Nothingrhymeswithfamily · 15/11/2017 17:19

That newstatesman article raises a lot of things I've thought for a while about regulation of both the 'stars' and the content. Its interesting to see experts views on it as well.

peppykoala · 15/11/2017 17:23

The article about the kids with the 'bad baby' stuff was awful, so, so much wrong with the parents doing that....

Monkeyinshoes · 15/11/2017 17:35

Not sure if this has already been posted but looks like they planned to sell the calendar for more than £50 at first.

This is the page from the Boots Christmas gift guide. £65 for confetti and stickers!!!

To think zoella is lying
Bubblegummie · 15/11/2017 17:35

This situation is completely shaming.

There’s something despicable about the way these YouTubers almost groom their viewers (saying that they “love” them, that they’re “friends” etc) when, really, they’re just looking to flog products, advertise brands and enrich themselves.

The sooner this grubby money train comes to an end (especially for the Gleam lot, like Zoella) the better.

trumptown · 15/11/2017 17:55

I've heard of her but never seen her vlogs before. OMG. Look at me and all my freebies!!!!! The whole thing just revolts me.

LaughingLlama · 15/11/2017 17:58

The items are more like Christmas Cracker gifts. Naff!

Stickers??? FFS Stickers as 1 gift in a 50 quid calendar. Who the fuck thought that was a good idea???

JulyAphrodite · 15/11/2017 18:01

We lived down the road from her before she moved to the latest mansion I think she has kept the old house too. On recycling day the stacks and stacks of empty boxes outside her house was like Christmas every week. The freebies she receives weekly are huge not surprised she had to move to house them!

I got as far as the jug of water. She's a bit irritating but then I always hate people who vlog. I think it's because they start talking, then can't really think of anything worth saying then get distracted with other shit in the background, such as noises and pets and it comes across a bit bad mannered!

Didn't get as far as the calender. If she was unhappy about it and the price, why put her name to it or have I missed the point?

I spend £25 a year on DS Advent calender but only because he has the Star Wars one and he loves the figures etc so it's worth it for that.

And is confetti really in her calender?! I'd be pissed off with confetti!

bettytaghetti · 15/11/2017 18:19

@Becca19962014 thank you for posting that video; absolutely hilarious! The inanity of it all is astounding!
The way she describes every item with the language skills of an average 8 year old just amazes me, or perhaps she talks that way because that's her target market? Hmm
Just for a treat, if you skip to 15 minutes, she describes the mug as being 'a proper china mug that you can hold' (how innovative!) with 'abnormal polka dots' (I think the designers would have said they were irregular, Zoella!) and can 'drink your preferred hot beverage of choice' from it. Thank god someone has explained what to do with those things; I have a whole cupboard of them and I didn't have a clue what they were for! Confused
What's really pissing me off though, is that I really like the colour/design of some of the products (ok, just the hot water bottle; I like pom-poms, shoot me), but really don't want to fund any more of her crap!! Blush

CoolCarrie · 15/11/2017 18:20

Bloody hell, originally £65 ! Spot on WhimsicalTart, selective anxiety indeed, especially when it comes to her fans at that awful meet up show.

sweetbitter · 15/11/2017 18:22

There’s something despicable about the way these YouTubers almost groom their viewers (saying that they “love” them, that they’re “friends” etc) when, really, they’re just looking to flog products, advertise brands and enrich themselves.*

Yes but they didn't start out like that. Most Youtubers will have started from their bedroom in the days before being a Youtuber was a career. At that time they probably WERE all about just having fun and making "online friends" with the negligible number of people who watched their videos.

It's only very gradually over time that it morphs into a moneymaking enterprise with millions of fans instead of a human, relatable number. So I suspect a lot of Youtubers, having started from a fairly innocent place, find easy to kid themselves that they're still the same person doing it for the same reasons they started out with. Even though it's patently not the case because the fame and money change all that and change their relationship with their viewers.

BehindTheScenes17 · 15/11/2017 18:37

@sweetbitter Exactly. And who is responsible for promoting these brands...her manager Mr Smales, who never discloses any financial info in articles. He should be the one people should hold accountable - I highly doubt he would like it if hsi won daughter's had been ruthlessly targeted by advertisers and exploited

I agree the management are partly accountable. But Zoella etc are adults and pioneers in their fields in a way. They need to be held part accountable too, and at least show willing to hold their hands up from time to time and admit they've done something wrong. They simply cannot keep having their cake (the fame and money) and eating it too (be "normal people" who are supposedly relatable to their young fans as such, and loved accordingly). One or the other has to give a bit.
