To be pissed off that DD has spent a good 15 hours playing video games today?

She’s still up now. Is 17 (18 in December).

It’s just annoying. She won’t roll out of bed until 11/12 tomorrow. She won’t go out with her friends (she is constantly getting messages off them and although texts them a lot, she says she “can’t be arsed to see them as she sees them every day at college” even though they have invited her to some really great places). She’s just so lazy.

Surely 15 hours (and counting) just isn’t healthy? She is working tomorrow evening, but from when she gets up at midday until 1 hour before she is due to start work, she will be playing it again.

Nightmare.

AIBU?

She's working and she's in college ??

Meh, could be worse.......op, she'll never get the chance to be this lazy again. All too soon she'll be joining the real world. Leave her to it

VerityMichaels · 25/10/2017 02:21

She definitely isn’t the worst. I just can’t stand all this video game playing. She was never into them as a younger teen. I would have no issue if she got up at a sensible time, watched a bit of TV, playing a bit of her game, popped out for a walk, went to the shop, saw a friend, etc.

Just seems so unhealthy

Perfectly normal. Let her enjoy just being how she wants to be now; she'll never get the chance again.

I miss those days and will never get them back.

Theresnonamesleft · 25/10/2017 02:31

Perfectly normal.
All mine went through it. Got to the holidays and only went out for work. Just needed down time to do nothing.
One gamed. One read. One binged watched tv.
When I have the chance I do it as well.

Kokeshi123 · 25/10/2017 02:40

Is she in education? I think she should be doing some studying.

VerityMichaels · 25/10/2017 02:42

Yes she’s in college. Apparently she only needs to read this book over the half term. She says she’s almost finished as she reads in the bath.

Is it really normal though? To not see your friends over half term?

OP posts:
SuperBeagle · 25/10/2017 02:50

It's fine. It's her free time; she can choose what to do with it. She works and is at college. She deserves to use her downtime however she wants to.

EddChinasMangina · 25/10/2017 02:55

Why don’t you agree with playing video games? Are you old and out of touch? Maybe lend her your hula hoop and a stick.

7Seas · 25/10/2017 04:23

Normal

Flippingecktucker · 25/10/2017 05:51

Absolutely normal.

Whatsername17 · 25/10/2017 06:17

I'm going to go against the grain here. Video games are addictive, 15 hours sat still glued to a screen isn't healthy. It's interfering with social relationship and her sleep patterns.

NaughtToThreeSadOnions · 25/10/2017 06:21

As long as she's up to date with her college work then I don't see the problem.

But you've just said she's working so she doesn't spend all her time playing computer games.

Maybe her friends are working so she can't see them or away on holiday.

If it was a longer holiday and it was literally the only thing she was doing and college work was slipping there might be a problem.

But nothing wrong with having down time during half term

theabysswithin · 25/10/2017 06:31

I'm with whatshername -- 15 hours in front of a screen is brain destroying.

It is normal and its the only time in her life when she will be able to do this. The fact she wants to do it isn't worrying at all.

But I do think you need to put your foot down and not allow her to literally do nothing else. Otherwise you're basically giving your tacit consent to a life totally structured around screen time.

Banjax · 25/10/2017 06:33

im pretty shocked that most of you think thats OK? 15 hours? fucking dreadful.

Ploppie4 · 25/10/2017 06:38

Very unhealthy. A couple of hours yes but not 15!!

I’d remove it

RealWomanOhYes · 25/10/2017 06:40

Well 15 hours isnt brill but it's not every day so I couldn't get worked up about it, especially as I've booked a day off work and arranged for someone to pick DC up so I can spend from 10am - 6pm on COD WWII when it comes out 😁

Ploppie4 · 25/10/2017 06:41

Some parents will say it’s ok because to admit it’s rubbish means they have to look at their own parenting

UrsulaPandress · 25/10/2017 06:43

Is she doing A Levels?

RockyBayEve · 25/10/2017 06:43

Yep

bigchris · 25/10/2017 06:44

What do you think retirement will look like Grin

lookingbeyond40 · 25/10/2017 06:47

That does seem a lot! Especially if she is staying up late playing? 15 hours seems that she struggles to stop playing? Is she playing late at night?

I’d keep an eye on it when she gets back to college. Obviously if other things start suffering, I’d take action.

lookingbeyond40 · 25/10/2017 06:49

Sorry just realised time of original post. Wow, that is rather late! Maybe suggest a cut off point, simply because she struggle going back to college if she’s tired! Get her back into a sensible routine in the last few days of half term.

SummatFishyEre · 25/10/2017 06:52

No that's not ok and I'm not sure why people say it is. I wasted my early 20s playing games for hours on end and I bitterly regret wasting that time

RealWomanOhYes · 25/10/2017 06:53

Reading the op it sounds like the 15 hours is maybe a one off anyway? The DD, who is nearly an adult, is working, and op says she'll prob spend from midday until an hour before work tomorrow. That's not another 15 hours is it?

annandale · 25/10/2017 06:59

Fresh air and exercise every day unless you're ill is the rule in my house. I know it makes me sound like Fanny Craddock and I don't give a shit. I'd say the same if she were reading for 15 hours a day, though I do think the mindless futility of gaming is worse.
